Chapter 4

Author: Curly Bunny
"I'll take you to Florenzo for a vacation next month," Lorenzo said as he sank into the seat opposite me. "Just the two of us. I'll let Matteo handle the issue of the estate."

He still remembered that I wanted to go to Isanola.

Seven years ago, when we got married, Lorenzo promised that once he had stabilized his position as the Don of the family, he would take me to visit the scenery that Papa often spoke about in his youth. However, the family's matters always got in the way.

He offered me his phone, asking me to pick which hotel I wanted to stay in. On the screen, two different suites with attached balconies were displayed.

I recognized one of the suites. I had saved a picture of it years ago. However, Lorenzo never once mentioned it in the last few years.

"Do you prefer this one?" Lorenzo asked.

I placed his phone next to his hand and said, "You can decide."

Lorenzo smiled, assuming that I was finally accepting his attempts at making amends. He looked down and messaged his assistant.

I picked up my glass of water that had already gone cold and didn't look at him again. I also didn't accept the plane ticket that was offered to me, asking, "Didn't you have a negotiation to attend today?"

"It's at 10:00 am. Viviana has already arrived ahead of time," Lorenzo answered, glancing at the time.

His phone rang the moment the words left his lips.

Viviana's voice was slightly shaking when she said, "The investigation team is here too, Lorenzo. They suspect that something's wrong with my Consigliere access card and are asking me to hand over my laptop. The heads of the Rossi family are all here. I have no idea what to do."

Lorenzo immediately shot to his feet. He walked over to me and adjusted my shawl as he said, "I promise you that we'll plan the trip together after I get back. No matter what happens today, I'll be back for dinner."

"Va bene," I said, rising and walking him to the door.

Lorenzo held my hand and brushed his thumb across the diamond ring. "Don't try to handle everything yourself anymore, Clara. You have me from now on."

I didn't pull my hand away. I only removed the diamond ring after he got into his car and left the mansion.

…

Irene brought a notary to the mansion at 8:00 am.

I penned my signature on the divorce agreement and left the doctor's approval note behind. I also authorized Irene to handle my marital assets according to the law. She would also deal with the family's shares that Lorenzo gave me.

Finally, I pulled out the diamond ring and said, "Time to return this to its owner."

"Do you want to leave a letter for him?" Irene asked as she placed the ring into a sealed bag.

I shook my head. "He has already heard everything that I wanted to tell him at the hospital."

…

A car stopped outside the back door at 9:00 am.

I carried a dark blue suitcase with me as I left the mansion. There were only a few sets of clothes and the scorched ultrasound photo inside.

When I walked past the security booth, a young security guard hastily rushed over to open the door for me. "Are you coming back tonight, Mrs. Corsi? The kitchen staff has prepared your favorite soup."

"I won't be returning."

The security guard was briefly stunned. He didn't question me further.

Irene questioned me one last time before the train departed. "Mr. Corsi will definitely look for you when the documents are delivered to him."

"He can speak to you instead," I replied.

I turned off the phone reserved for family members and left it with Irene, keeping only my personal number.

The train departed New Volka at exactly 10:00 am. I didn't look back.

…

Meanwhile, Lorenzo was in the meeting room with the heads of the family.

Viviana had just finished giving her statement when she suddenly grabbed his sleeve, saying that she was dizzy.

Lorenzo reflexively steadied her. His phone kept buzzing.

The first message was from Irene, informing him that I was officially divorcing him. The second message was from Matteo.

"The estate's maintenance door surveillance footage has been restored, Don Corsi."

Lorenzo's expression immediately twisted when he read the first message. "Where's Clara?" he demanded.

"She left New Volka this morning."

"It's been ten whole days. If you don't come out right now, I'm going to break your door down," Nora exclaimed.I smiled as I showed her my passport. My destination was Florenzo. When Nora asked me to bring back some chocolate for her, I told her to give me a list. I didn't want her to only recall what she wanted when I was already at the airport.Irene invited me out for coffee before I left, handing over the last few documents that belonged to me. A postcard that Papa sent me in the past was among the documents. He had written down the names of the streets that he had strolled along in his youth on the back."They found it in an old book that you left behind in the mansion," she said.I smoothed out the folded edges with my fingers and slipped it into my bag.Irene hesitated for a moment before asking if I was willing to meet Lorenzo. "He's here to sign another handover document. We were supposed to meet after you left, but the driver told me that he's already here.""It's alr

Lorenzo didn't ask me if I wanted to reconsider my decision when his lawyer handed the document to me. His hand that was pressed against the paper trembled slightly when he penned his signature on the last page, causing the ink to smear slightly.I slipped my own copy of the document into an envelope. After Irene checked everything, she informed us that we just had to wait for the paperwork to be processed. She would notify us separately when it was done.Lorenzo nodded. He waited for everyone to leave before asking if I could stay for a few more minutes.I glanced at the time. "Va bene."Lorenzo grabbed the paper bag that had been sitting next to him. Instead of handing it to me, he asked me to take a peek. There was a small, gray blanket in the bag. Our child had just reached ten weeks old when I bought it. I remembered telling the sales assistant that I didn't know whether we were having a boy or a girl. Lorenzo had picked out two different-colored blankets, but I had put one

Nora helped me move into my new home. The apartment didn't have an elevator. Fortunately, I only had to climb up half a flight of stairs. There was a maple tree outside the window.I had just placed the photo frame down when I received a call from Irene."Lorenzo wants to send a set of furniture to you. He told his lawyer to ask you first. He hasn't made any arrangements yet," she said."No need," I replied. "I've already bought everything."I looked at the newly built bed that didn't have any bedsheets yet. I grabbed my phone and snapped a picture, sending it to Irene. "Tell him that I'm not lacking anything."The next day, Irene showed up with another document.Lorenzo was willing to continue paying my medical bills even after our divorce and wanted to set up a separate fund for it. After I read through the terms, I asked Irene if the current procedures would be affected if I rejected his offer."No," she said. "You can just deal with this according to the scope that we've ve

"The Don will clarify the situation in front of everyone. Everyone who was involved in the internal investigation will be present."I pressed my phone between my ear and shoulder as I drew a circle around a station on the map. "Send the document to Irene. I don't need to be there.""The Don hopes that you can personally hear his statement, Mrs. Corsi.""Please call me Clara."The man on the other end of the line paused for a moment before correcting himself. "Please consider his request, Ms. Clara."I rejected him again, saying, "I'm working that day. He doesn't need to wait for me if he wants to clarify the situation."A few days later, Irene delivered the meeting log to me. Lorenzo first distributed the results of the investigation to the people who were present, requesting that they correct the previous record.Isabella placed the report down after she flipped through two pages. "Since you've already found out the truth, you could have resolved this privately. There's already

I agreed to show up because I wanted to finalize the following procedures as soon as possible.Lorenzo arrived half an hour earlier than the agreed time. A glass of water sat untouched before him. He rose to his feet when he noticed me, causing his chair to scrape against the floor. "You've lost weight," he said.I shrugged off my coat and sat next to Irene. "Let's begin."Lorenzo pulled out a new access card from his briefcase. Pushing it toward me, he said, "I've restored all of your access in the house. No one will ever stop you again."Irene looked at me. When I shook my head, she pushed the card back to him.Lorenzo didn't retract his hand. "I've already investigated Viviana. She lied. I shouldn't have—""You're the one who took that photo," I said, interrupting him. "The client just confirmed the group booking that you handled on my behalf yesterday," Nora said. "Have you done this before?""I've handled bookings and arranged trips in the past," I replied. In the past, I was always the one who handled the dozens of guests whenever the family hosted a banquet, including their arrival, food restrictions, and accommodations.Nora pointed downstairs and said, "My sister is going back to school next month. Do you want to try taking charge of the front desk in the afternoons?"She then wrote down the working hours and salary and showed me the details. "There are other people who are in charge of moving the luggage and cleaning. You just have to handle the reservations and check-ins."We agreed to a three-day trial. On the first afternoon, a couple with a child showed up with the wrong reservation date. The wife scrolled through her email as she stood at the front desk while the husband constantly asked if we were willing to give them another guest
