Sable's wine glass slipped an inch in her hand before she caught it . Across the banquet hall, she felt more than saw the way conversation had begun to still around them, nobles sensing, the way courts always did, that something worth watching had just entered the room even without fully understanding what.

"An unfinished acquaintance," Kael repeated, voice gone flat and dangerous in a way she hadn't heard from him before, not even in the cold formality of the throne room. He turned to her, something searching in his expression now, some question he hadn't asked yet. "You know this name."

"Draven Kastor courted my pack's elders for my hand two winters ago," Sable said, keeping her voice as steady as she could manage though her pulse had begun to race. "They refused him. He didn't take it well, from what I remember hearing afterward, though I never met him directly myself."

"He refused, or your elders refused him?"

"They refused him," Sable said. "They told him I wasn't worth the trouble of a formal offer. I believe that was the phrase used." She said it plainly, without flinching, though the old humiliation of it still sat familiar and sour in her chest. "I don't know why he'd remember it as unfinished. There was nothing between us to finish."

Something dark passed behind Kael's eyes at that, and though he said nothing further in front of the steward, Sable recognized, even in the short time she'd known him, the particular stillness that meant something had settled hard and unwelcome in his chest.

"Tell the rider the envoy is welcome to arrive as scheduled, and not a day before," Kael said finally, voice carrying just enough authority to end the conversation. "Alpha Kastor will wait like every other representative, or he will not be received at all."

The steward bowed and hurried off to relay the message, and the banquet resumed its normal murmur around them, . However, Able noticed several nobles continuing to glance their way with renewed, hungry curiosity. She understood, with a sinking feeling, that whatever story was forming about her in this court tonight had just gained an entirely new and more dangerous chapter.

"You didn't have to defend me to the steward," Sable said quietly, once the immediate attention had drifted elsewhere. "You could have simply let him come early. It's not as though you owe me anything."

Kael turned to look at her fully then, something complicated working behind his expression. "I don't yet understand what I owe you," he admitted, low enough that it felt almost like a confession he hadn't intended to make aloud. "But I understand that a man who speaks of an omega as though she is an unfinished acquisition does not deserve early access to my court, whatever else remains unsettled between us."

It wasn't quite kind. It wasn't the apology she still, foolishly, found herself wanting from him. But it was something, some small crack in the cold wall he'd built around himself since the moment she'd walked into his throne room, and Sable found she didn't entirely know what to do with the warmth that small crack stirred in her chest.

The rest of the banquet passed without further incident, though Sable caught Lady Marisol watching her and Kael's exchange from across the hall more than once, expression unreadable, calculating in a way that made Sable's skin prickle with unease she couldn't quite name.

It was near midnight, the banquet finally concluded and most of the court retired, when Fenna found Sable back in her chamber, helping her out of the borrowed green gown with careful, practiced hands.

"You handled Lady Marisol well tonight," Fenna said. "Word's already traveling through the servants' halls. They're saying the omega girl has more spine than the court gave her credit for."

"It doesn't feel like much of a victory," Sable admitted, sinking onto the edge of her bed once the gown was finally free. "I'm exhausted, Fenna. I've been here less than a day, and already that man is riding toward this mountain who thinks he has some claim on me, and a woman who clearly wants me gone, and a king who can't decide whether he wants me here at all."

"He defended you tonight," Fenna said gently. "Twice, from what I heard. Once from Lady Marisol's tongue, and once from a rider bringing word of Kastor."

"He also called me unworthy of this crown, in front of his entire court, less than a day ago."

Fenna was quiet for a moment, folding the green gown carefully over one arm. "Bonds are strange things, my lady. They don't ask permission before they take root, and sometimes it takes a proud man longer than it should to understand what's already growing in his own chest. I've served this palace for a long time. I've never once seen a king defend an omega mate's honor at a banquet within a day of rejecting her at the throne. That's nothing, whatever it feels like tonight."

Sable wanted to believe that. She let herself, just slightly, as exhaustion finally began pulling her toward sleep, curled beneath unfamiliar blankets in a chamber that no longer felt quite as cold as it had the night before.

She was nearly asleep when a soft, urgent knock came at her door, far too late for any ordinary visitor. Fenna, still awake and tidying nearby, crossed to answer it, and Sable heard a young guard's voice, low and hurried, delivering some message she couldn't quite make out.

Fenna's face, when she turned back, had gone carefully blank in a way that immediately set Sable's nerves alight.

"What is it?" Sable asked, already sitting up.

"A scout just rode in from the western pass," Fenna said slowly. "Alpha Kastor's party was spotted moving faster than expected. He's not waiting for the formal envoy date after all, my lady. He'll be at the mountain's base by tomorrow evening, nearly a week early, and he's brought considerably more riders with him than any envoy party requires.”

The courtyard fell into a tense, watchful silence, Draven's eighty riders spread out along the mountain road behind him like a shadow the light hadn't caught up to yet, and Sable felt every eye at the gate shift between the two men, waiting to see which one would speak first."You're a week early, Kastor," Kael said, voice carrying the same flat, dangerous calm he'd used with the steward the night before. "The envoy was agreed for the formal date, not whenever your patience ran thin.""My patience ran thin two winters ago," Draven said easily, dismounting without waiting for permission, boots striking the packed earth with unhurried confidence. "I've simply grown tired of waiting politely for things that matter to me. You'll understand that instinct eventually, dragon king, once you've held a mate bond longer than a handful of days.""She is not a matter that concerns you," Kael said."Isn't she?" Draven's eyes slid to Sable, warm and possessive in a way that made her stomach turn eve

Kael was in the war room before the sun had fully cleared the eastern ridge, maps already spread across the table, General Faelan bent over them with the grim focus of a man who had commanded Drakoria's forces long enough to know exactly how quickly good news could turn bad."Eighty riders at last count," Faelan said, tapping a marked position on the map well short of the formal envoy road. "Moving fast, my king, and not along the route we agreed with the border packs. If they keep this pace, they'll be camped at the base of the mountain by dusk.""That's not an envoy," Kael said. "That's a show of force.""It's a message," Faelan corrected, straightening. "He wants every pack watching to see whether you'll let him arrive on his own terms or hold him to the agreement. Either way, my king, he's already telling the border territories something about you before he's set foot inside your gates."Kael's jaw tightened, and Sable, seated quietly near the war room's edge where she'd been all

The banquet hall was already filling by the time Fenna finished lacing Sable into the only gown that could be altered in time, deep green silk that had clearly been tailored for someone with broader shoulders, and Sable stood before the small looking glass feeling every inch the borrowed, ill-fitting thing she suspected the entire court already believed her to be."You look lovely," Fenna said firmly, catching the doubt on Sable's face in the glass."I look like I'm wearing someone else's life," Sable said, and Fenna, to her credit, didn't argue the point, only smoothed a stray curl back from Sable's face and steered her firmly toward the door before nerves could root her in place entirely. The hall itself was overwhelming, dragon nobility and visiting wolf envoys mingling beneath high vaulted ceilings strung with lanterns that burned without smoke, an enchantment Sable had never seen before and didn't have the composure left to properly admire. She was seated, as promised, at the kin

Kael did not sleep at all that night, and by the third hour of pacing his chambers, he had begun to suspect he never would again. He told himself, over and over, that the growl which had torn loose in his chest during the presentation meant nothing. A reflex. A trick of overwrought nerves after three sleepless nights waiting for the bond to settle. It had nothing to do with the girl herself, nothing to do with the way her eyes had found his across the crowded hall and struck something loose in his chest that he still hadn't managed to put back in place hours later. He nearly believed it, until he caught himself standing at his window sometime past midnight, staring out toward the west wing, wondering whether she was sleeping."You're doing that thing again," came a dry voice from his doorway, and Kael turned to find Torv leaning against the frame, arms crossed, watching him with the particular assessing look he reserved for matters of state. "Standing very still and pretending you're

The road up Mount Ashkar took three days, and by the time Sable's small traveling party reached the base of the palace steps, her legs had gone numb with cold and her chest tight with a dread that had only deepened with every mile. She had never seen anything like Drakoria before. The lower territories where she'd grown up were modest, practical, wood and stone built low against the wind, but the palace rose above her now in dark, gleaming spires that seemed to swallow the sky itself, carved from black volcanic rock that still, even centuries after the mountain's fire had cooled, radiated a faint and unsettling warmth beneath her palm when she pressed a hand against the outer wall."Chin up," Rhea murmured beside her, though her sister's own voice wavered with nerves she was fighting hard to disguise. "Whatever happens in there, you are not going to shrink in front of them. I won't let you."Sable wanted to believe that was possible. Standing at the base of those steps, dressed in the
