Chapter 2

Penulis: Jasmine Flower
Lucian froze, disbelief written across his face.

“What did you say?”

The next second, he grabbed my shoulders. His eyes widened, and his voice rose without him noticing.

“Who? Who did you marry?”

I was about to say Kael’s name, but Lucian suddenly let go and laughed.

“You are lying to upset me, aren’t you?”

“Elara, you were six months pregnant back then. Every time I left you for Liora, you cried into my clothes. Everyone knew you would give birth to my child. Everyone knew you could not live without me.”

“What decent man would marry you?”

“I know you resent my choice back then. But now that you have returned to Drakefire, returned to my side, you should be smart enough to let go of your pride. Stop clinging to that little matter from the past.”

A little matter?

Everything I had suffered was only a small old grievance to him.

He even believed that since I had survived, I should forget everything and return to him, useful and obedient as before.

He did not know that the little matter he spoke of had changed my entire fate.

It remade me.

It led me to the peak of power, standing beside Kael Drakon.

“Good. Your silence says enough.”

Lucian thought he had seen through me. He looked pleased.

“Elara, there is no need to make up such pitiful lies for my attention. I understand. Every day away from me must have been lonely and desperate.”

He stepped closer, excitement in his eyes.

“Please me. Obey me. After the banquet, I may allow you to live in my household. You will not have to wander anymore.”

As he spoke, he reached for my hair.

Before he could touch me, a sharp female voice came from behind him.

“Elara! You are alive?”

Liora Vale walked forward, her heavy skirt sweeping the floor as she stepped between Lucian and me.

She wore an extravagant gown and an expensive diamond necklace, chin lifted proudly.

She looked less like Lucian’s sister-in-law and more like the hostess of the feast.

“They told me you had returned. I did not believe it.”

“Lucian, now that poor Elara is back, you must treat her kindly. All these years, she must have suffered alone outside the city.”

“Unlike me and my child. You cared for us with all your heart.”

I followed Liora’s gaze and looked at the boy surrounded by guards.

He was six years old.

By the timing, Liora had already been pregnant when Drakefire fell.

Lucian’s elder brother had been dead for two years by then.

Lucian had always claimed he was only caring for his brother’s widow.

Whenever Liora called, he would abandon me without hesitation, even when I was six months pregnant.

Afterward, he would blame me for being petty when I cried.

So Liora had been carrying his child even then.

No wonder he chose her and abandoned me.

“Rowan is a gifted child,” Lucian said proudly, placing a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “He inherited my brother’s strength and courage.”

“When Elara hatches the fire dragon, I will name Rowan heir to Drakefire Keep.”

“This will be my final duty to my dead brother.”

I had never heard anyone say something so shameless so loudly.

Everyone present knew a six-year-old boy could not be the child of a man who had died eight years ago.

But to please Lucian, they still clapped and praised Rowan.

“He is the most talented child I have ever seen.”

“A natural heir.”

“When he learns to tame dragons, perhaps he will help Lord Lucian surpass Kael Drakon.”

Then someone looked at me.

“I remember Lady Elara was pregnant before she was captured.”

Liora’s face darkened.

Lucian’s eyes, however, lit up.

“Yes. The child should be seven now.” He looked at me with sudden expectation. “Did you bring the child back? A boy or a girl?”

“Mother!”

A clear young voice rang through the crowd.

My son, Auren Drakon, ran toward me.

He was the child Kael and I had after I survived that night, the honored heir of the Supreme Dragonlord.

“I was hungry, so I rode Emberwing to the banquet first.”

“Father is still inspecting the territory.

After the banquet, Kael did not execute Lucian and Liora in the hall.He handed them to the Vale family and the Dragon Court instead, with only one order: Drakefire Keep would give my wife a public answer. The investigation moved faster than anyone expected. The Vale elders found the poison records hidden in Lucian’s private accounts. His brother had not died of illness. Small doses had been given to him for months, slow enough to look like a wasting sickness and quiet enough to leave Lucian standing beside the deathbed, playing the loyal younger brother. The prisoner’s testimony also matched the old reports from the night Drakefire fell. Liora had been captured first. She had bought her life by giving the enemy my hiding place.By the time the truth was announced, no one in Drakefire could pretend ignorance anymore.Lucian was stripped of his title. Liora lost every protection the Vale name had given her. Rowan, whose claim had been built on their lies, was cast out with them. The Val

Liora’s silence lasted only a moment before she threw herself at Lucian’s feet.“She is lying,” she cried. “Lucian, you have to believe me. Elara hates us. She hates that you saved me instead of her, and now that she is Lady Drakon, she can say anything she wants.”She clutched the hem of his coat with both hands.“Everyone will believe her because of who she married. But you know me. You know I would never do something so cruel.”Before Lucian could answer, footsteps sounded from the entrance.Kael’s guard returned with a prisoner in chains. The man was older now, thin and scarred, but I still remembered the enemy crest burned into his armor that night. He had been one of the soldiers who dragged me from the storehouse. The guard forced him to his knees in the center of the hall.“Look at her.”The prisoner lifted his head. His eyes moved across the room and stopped on Liora.“That is the woman.”The prisoner swallowed and continued, “When Drakefire fell, we captured her first. She be

Lucian sat where the dragon fire had driven him down, his face pale beneath the soot on his coat.“No,” he said, forcing the word out. “No, this is impossible.”His gaze moved between Kael and me, searching for some flaw in the truth before him.“Elara, tell me he is not Kael Drakon.”“He is,” I said. “And he is my husband.”The hall, already silent, seemed to tighten around those words.Lucian shook his head slowly. “So you really married someone else?”“Yes. Seven years ago, after you shut the gates and left me outside Drakefire’s walls, Kael saved me. I married him after that. I became Lady Drakon.”His face changed at the title. Not grief. Not regret. Possession, wounded at last because it had been denied. He came toward me in two hard steps and gripped my shoulders.“How could he marry you? You were carrying my child.”Kael’s eyes sharpened. Before he could move, I pushed Lucian’s hands away.“Kael married me because he loved me.”The simplicity of the answer seemed to anger Lucia

Liora saw Lucian’s tone soften toward me, and her eyes reddened at once.“Elara, no wonder you came back so different. So you really did hatch the fire dragon.”She pulled Rowan close and lowered her voice.“When you become Lady of Drakefire, please do not drive us away. Rowan and I have nowhere else to go. All these years, Lucian was the only one who protected us.”Lucian stepped in front of them without hesitation.“With me here, no one will drive you out.”After reassuring Liora, he turned back to me, his face already dark with accusation.“Elara, can you stop being so selfish? Hatching a fire dragon is not some private matter between you and your hurt feelings. Why did you not tell me the moment it happened?”He pointed at the dragon outside the hall, his voice rising.“If I had known earlier, I might already have surpassed Kael Drakon. I might already have united every city under Drakefire’s banner. Do you understand what you cost me?”“For one moment of resentment, you let a stra

The fire dragon landed hard enough to shake the banquet hall. The force of its wings threw Lucian off my back and sent him crashing across the floor. Before anyone could recover, Kael had already dismounted. His gaze found me among the fallen guards, and the cold command in his face broke into alarm.“Elara.”He crossed the hall, helped me up, and checked the blood and dust on my clothes.“What happened? Are you hurt?”“I am fine.”Auren broke free from the guard and rushed into his arms.“Father! They bullied Mother!”Kael held him close, then looked at the guards who had forced us down. Dragon power swept through the hall. The guards dropped to their knees, stiff and unable to move. The guests who had mocked me earlier turned pale.“That is dragon power.”“No wonder he can ride the fire dragon.”“Only Kael Drakon can command dragons.”“Then Elara may truly be Lady Drakon.”Several people lowered their heads at once.“Lady Elara, forgive us. We were rude.”Liora understood the danger

Auren’s words fell like a stone into the hall.“What? He said he rode a dragon here?”“A child that young can ride a dragon?”“How is that possible? Isn’t Lord Kael the only one who can tame dragons?”They were so shocked that none of them noticed Auren had called the man inspecting the territory his father.Lucian also froze. He stared at Auren.Rowan, who had been praised only moments ago, frowned angrily. He glared at my son, furious that all attention had been taken from him.Liora raised an eyebrow, her face full of contempt.“Elara, this is not right. It is bad enough that you lie for sympathy, but now you are making your child lie too.”“I know you resent us because of the past, but this is an important banquet. Lord Kael and his wife will arrive soon. Do not ruin everything with these vain lies.”Lucian’s expression turned serious.“Liora is right.”“Elara, no child can tame a dragon. Dragons are rare. Most people never even see one.”Liora crossed her arms and looked at Auren
