Chapter 3

Author: Leon Moore
Julian let the words slip out casually. "It's the same in bed. You still tense up even now. But when I'm with Wendy, I can let go and be a real man without holding anything back."

Those words shattered what little sanity I had left.

The young man who had once fought desperately to protect me had clawed his way through countless hardships to become the man everyone now knew as Mr. Cole.

He used to work himself so hard that he'd drink until he vomited blood rather than waste time in a hospital.

He had once been so careful and tender with me beneath the covers, removing my clothes slowly as if I were something precious. "Daphne, I'm going to give you a safe, comfortable life. You'll never have to be afraid again!

"I'll take it slow. If you're uncomfortable, I'll stop immediately."

How had the man who once loved me so deeply become such a stranger?

I shot to my feet and began smashing everything within reach.

My hair was disheveled, tears had long since ruined my makeup, and I looked like a complete lunatic.

How I wished he would stand up, pull me tightly into his arms, and tell me this was nothing more than a cruel joke.

But he merely raised an eyebrow, completely unmoved by my outburst.

Defeated, I collapsed back onto the couch and gasped for breath. "When did you two start?"

He stubbed out his cigarette. "On our wedding night six years ago. You couldn't stir the slightest desire in me. I left you there and went drinking with Wendy. That night..."

It felt as though someone had plunged a knife straight into my heart. The pain was so intense that I could barely breathe.

I had been filled with anticipation on our wedding night. However, when he moved on top of me, nausea overwhelmed me, and I ran to the bathroom to vomit.

By the time I came back out, he was gone.

I had called him desperately, over and over. I had wanted to tell him I hadn't been afraid. I had been pregnant.

But one of my calls had connected for only a second. I had heard a soft gasp on the other end before the line went dead.

At the time, I had convinced myself I had imagined it.

Only now did I realize that the voice had belonged to Wendy.

Julian continued, "At first, we planned to keep it to ourselves because we didn't want to hurt you. Then she found out she was pregnant.

"Getting pregnant out of wedlock terrified her, so I had no choice but to stay by her side throughout the pregnancy.

"Somewhere along the way, I developed feelings for her."

A bitter smile slowly spread across my face through my tears.

Throughout my pregnancy, I had suffered from severe morning sickness. So many times, I had wished he could be by my side through every difficult moment.

But he had always been busy.

I had assumed he had been working himself to the bone to build a better life for our unborn baby.

The truth was that he had been by my best friend's side instead.

Julian stood and straightened his collar. "When we found out you'd given birth to a stillborn baby, Wendy even had surgery to deliver hers early because she didn't want you to fall apart.

"See? She's been so good to you."

I laughed until I suddenly tasted something metallic.

Without realizing it, I had bitten the inside of my mouth hard enough to draw blood.

So good to me… She had secretly given birth to my husband's son. Right under my nose, she had spent six years playing the wronged mistress in my husband's life.

Julian had already reached the door when he turned back.

"You hurt Wendy's son. She's waiting for you to apologize. Until you realize what you did wrong, don't see Nathan again." His tone was as casual as when he reminded me not to wait up for dinner.

That morning, we'd gone to our son's awards ceremony amid laughter and excitement. Now the room was deathly silent.

I didn't know how long I sat there before my entire body went numb.

My phone rang, and I picked it up mechanically.

Julian had sent me a photo. He and Wendy were celebrating Nathan's award with him. The three of them smiled brightly at the camera, as if they were the ones who belonged together, a happy family without me.

Julian: [See? Nathan doesn't need you either!]

"Please... don't reject it."Only after I accepted it did he breathe a sigh of relief.I turned to leave, but he hesitated. In the end, he called out to stop me. "Daphne, I've thought about a lot of things lately. For all these years, I convinced myself that I was protecting you until I wore myself out, and I sought a

"It's all over! Daphne, the truth is finally out. The three of us can stay together forever now."I pushed him away coldly. "Julian, we're already divorced!"I carried Nathan a few steps before I turned back. "Wendy was right about one thing. You weren't worth everything the two of us went through for your sake."…When I returned home, I quickly packed my things and left with Nathan. I wanted to put this entire mess behind us.Someone had filmed Wendy abducting Nathan that day and uploaded the footage online. The internet was divided between those who condemned her and those who sympathized with her, and the arguments grew more heated by the hou

The police stopped the long-distance bus.Wendy climbed off with Nathan clutched tightly in her arms. She tried to run, but the officers stopped her.Julian stared at her in disbelief. "Wendy, why did you take Nathan away? You know perfectly well that he's Daphne's only reason to keep going. By doing this, you're taking away the one thing keeping her going. How could you do this to her?""But Nathan is my hope too!" Wendy screamed at him. "What right do you have to take him away from me?"She turned to me, and hatred flashed in her eyes. "Daphne, wasn't five years with Nathan enough? Why can't you just leave us alone?"My heart clenched at the fear in the boy's eyes as he looked at me. "Wendy, if you genuinely wanted what was best for him, I wouldn't be fighting this hard to keep him."But you poisoned him for your own selfish reasons and left his stomach and intestines dangerously weak."You couldn't even wait for him to recover before you tried to take him away. My whole body trembled uncontrollably. Then I dreamed of my mother again. After I had fallen asleep, she crouched beside my bed and sobbed quietly. "It's all Mommy's fault. I trusted the wrong man. I can't take the beatings anymore. I'm sorry, Daphne. Mommy has to go!"I desperately tried to scream, "Mommy, please don't leave me! No matter how hard I tried, even when my face turned red from the effort, I couldn't make a sound.Benny rubbed his hands together and approached me with a vicious grin. "Daphne, you're all grown up now. Daddy can't have taken care of you all these years for nothing..."I backed away in terror. "No... No..."Suddenly, Nathan appeared beside me.He called out anxiously, "Mommy, what's wrong? Mommy, wake up! Don't you love me the most? I suddenly sprang to my feet and threw myself at Wendy with all my strength.Wendy slammed into the solid wall behind her and let out a pained groan."Why should I give you my blessing?" I shrieked. "I'm a lunatic now. I can kill someone and get away with it!"I hurled myself at her again and again, no longer caring whether I lived or died, until her cries for help brought the medical staff rushing in.They forcibly restrained me and injected me with a sedative. As my consciousness began to fade, I heard Wendy scream at me in frustration, "Daphne, I've let you have your way since we were kids! As I stared at Julian's smug message, the hand holding my phone began to tremble.…I never expected Wendy to bring Nathan back the very next day. The boy hid behind her like a frightened fawn.Wendy pulled him out from behind her and gently nudged him toward me. "Daphne, I never meant to destroy your family. Julian is yours, and Nathan... is yours too!"She'd always been like this. When we were little and our parents bought us apples, she always gave me the biggest one. In middle school, whenever we went shopping for dresses, she always let me choose first. The day Julian and I officially got together, she smiled and teased me, "You know that if he's your man, Daphne, I won't touch him no matter how much I like him."And now, she was doing the same thing. She had had him, then tossed him back to me as if she were doing me a favor.I looked at her with nothing but hatred. "If you're giving him back to me, then get out of my house!"Wendy's eyes immediately filled with tears. Sh
