"I have to take responsibility for her child."

He rubbed Lydia's belly, looking at her with total adoration.

I took a deep breath as I watched the ridiculous scene.

"Edgar, you don't get to talk about responsibility."

The words were barely out of my mouth when he slapped me hard across the face.

Blood trickled from my lip.

Without thinking, Edgar touched my swollen cheek.

"Sorry, Helga. I didn't want to do that.

"I just don't want you being so unreasonable."

His hands tightened on my face.

"Promise me!

"No more tantrums, okay?"

I used all my strength to take half a step back, out of his grasp.

I'd trusted him. That was the only reason I'd drunk the wine.

Otherwise, my pirate instincts would have stopped me.

And now I was too weak to fight back.

Lydia took the chance to snuggle into Edgar's arms.

"See? You're being nice to her, and she throws it back in your face.

"I'll be honest with you, Helga. Edgar and I were in love long before he ever met you.

"If it hadn't been for the LeBlanc family fortune, he never would have gone through with this sham of a marriage.

"You didn't know, did you? Every time Edgar went to sea, it was so he could spend his nights in my bed."

Her words sent a sharp pain through my chest.

Everything I'd believed these past few years, even my marriage, had been a carefully woven lie.

What a joke.

Seeing my reaction, Edgar softened his tone. "Lydia might have said it harshly. Don't take it to heart.

"These past few years, I've given you everything except love.

"As long as you behave and take your medicine, you'll remain the duchess."

He straightened his cuffs.

"I know you can't live without me.

"Other than that useless brother of yours, you don't have any family."

I looked up.

"Edgar, you bring home a bastard and still expect me to help you keep up appearances? You really have no shame!"

His face darkened.

He grabbed me by the hair and threw me against the fireplace.

Thud.

I curled up in pain, coughing dryly.

I hadn't even caught my breath.

Edgar grabbed my chin and forced me to look at the Windham family crest.

"Listen, I don't want to be rough with you either!

"But that child has the noble blood of the Windham family!

"Someone as lowborn as you has no right to insult him!

"From today on, you'll behave yourself every single day.

"You'll be the mother of Lydia's child, at least on paper.
