Chapter 3

Author: Helen
The next morning, I went to the study.

Waiting on the desk were the asset files Lukas had sent overnight from Switzerland by encrypted fax.

I turned to the first page and saw my mother's signature.

In my last life, I had trusted my father and my fiancé, so I never once took stock of what my mother had left me. Only now did I realize that she had already given me everything I needed to fight back.

"Three of Bordeaux's top wine estates. Two standalone office buildings in Mayfair, London. A museum-quality art collection fund worth £1.2 billion..."

I kept reading.

Most important of all was a 31 percent stake in the Ashbourne Group, all of it voting shares.

The Ashbourne Group operated in real estate, mining, and private banking, and it was the foundation of my father's power. He owned 35 percent. If I could win over a few minority shareholders, I would outvote him on the board.

"No wonder Father was in such a hurry to get me to sign the power of attorney." I scoffed.

I had ten years of business experience from my last life, so it didn't take me long to see through my father's doctored financial reports. He had been routing my dividends through shell companies in the Cayman Islands into his private accounts, then using the money to pay off his gambling debts.

I picked up the phone again. "Start the process right away. I want all the shares and property in my name moved into an independent trust in Switzerland. Without my biometrics and the signatures of three separate lawyers, no one gets to touch any of it."

"Understood, Lady Evelyn! And the £24 million your father took..."

"Leave that for now. We'll need it as evidence when we go after him. And please get in touch with Frank Mercer and Ross Hamilton. Tell them I'm willing to buy their shares at ten percent above market price."

They had both lost big on bad investments and needed cash fast. Between them, they held ten percent of the Ashbourne Group. Once I had their shares, my voting power would reach 41 percent, more than my father's.

With everything in motion, I changed into a white suit.

Until the showdown, I still had to play the bride-to-be who was busy planning her wedding.

That afternoon, I went to the bridal salon.

Several seamstresses fussed around me, fitting my wedding dress.

Adrian sat on the sofa, glancing down every so often to send a text.

He thought I couldn't see.

But his phone was reflected in the full-length mirror. He was texting Claire.

"Adrian," I said, turning around.

He quickly locked his phone. "Beautiful," he said absently. "Fit for the future lady of the Devaux family."

I walked over to him. "You seem distracted. Is work more important than being here for my dress fitting?"

He smiled and straightened his tie. "The foundation's been busy lately. You're a sensible woman. You should understand. Don't be clingy like some little girl."

Sensible. That word again. In my last life, "sensible" was the word that held me hostage until the day I died!

"Of course." I reached over to straighten his cuff links for him.

Just as my fingertips brushed across them, I froze.

A gold thread was snagged in one of them.

It came from the special fabric of the dress Claire had worn last night.

So Adrian had gone to see Claire after he left the castle the night before.

I wasn't angry. All I could think was that I finally had proof.

"What is it?" When he saw me staring at his sleeve, Adrian pulled his hand away awkwardly.

"Nothing." I plucked off the gold thread and slipped it into my pocket. "Nice cuff links."

Adrian relaxed. "Glad you like them. The guest list for the wedding is done, by the way. Claire will be your maid of honor."

My father's illegitimate daughter as my maid of honor?

Were they trying to humiliate me, or laying the groundwork for what came next?

"Fine," I said with a smile. "If she has the nerve to show up."

After I left the salon, I got into a black Land Rover.

The private investigator I'd hired handed me an envelope.

"Ms. Ashbourne, Mr. Devaux bought Claire an apartment in Mayfair. We've been following him for a week, and he's spent at least three nights there."

The envelope was full of photos.

They showed the two of them getting cozy at the apartment, in hotels, and out on the street.

In one of them, Adrian was stroking Claire's stomach.

"Keep watching them, especially in the days before the wedding. I want airtight evidence." I handed over a check.

"No problem, Ms. Ashbourne."

I closed the envelope.

Adrian. Father. Claire...

You all think you've gotten away with it. You think I'm still the fool who'll let you carve me up.

At the wedding six weeks from now, I'll see every one of you ruined and disgraced.

For now, though, it was time to get my exit plan ready.

Once I had dealt with them, I was going to Montana.

I took out the one-way plane ticket I'd already booked and brushed the dust off it.

As soon as I was done with this pile of trash, I'd go and start a brand-new life.

The moment I stepped into the orchard, the sight in front of me stopped me in my tracks.Thousands of warm, soft string lights hung from the old, weathered trees, turning the whole orchard into something out of a fairy tale. In a clearing in the middle, a vintage record player played smooth, mellow jazz. There was none of the cold, grim air of a European castle, only the fresh smell of grass and trees beneath a sky full of stars.Cole turned to face me. His gray-blue eyes shone with a fierce, reverent light, brighter than all the stars overhead. He hadn't bought an expensive Cartier diamond. Instead, he pulled a ring from his pocket, one he had made by twisting wire from the farm's old fence and polishing it smooth. A wild rose in full bloom was delicately engraved on the front.Cole got down on one knee in the dewy grass."Evelyn." Cole's voice was low and shaky. "I can't give you a castle wedding with hundreds of guests or a noble title to inherit. All I've got is this endless stretc

No trace remained of the elegant, aristocratic financier Adrian used to be.His suit was wrinkled and filthy, and his eyes were sunken and bloodshot. He knelt in the mud without a shred of pride, clinging to my boots and wailing."Evelyn! I was wrong! I know that now, I really do!"Adrian tipped his head back to look up at me, desperation and regret written all over his face. "Please, save me! My family cut me off. I've got nothing left! It wasn't until I lost you that I realized that bitch Claire isn't worth a single hair on your head! You're the only woman who deserves to stand by my side!"I stood still and looked down at the man kneeling in the mud.The pain and despair in his eyes were genuine. I knew he truly regretted it. But all I felt was disgust and bitter irony."Adrian." I slowly pulled my foot free, my voice as cold as a blade. "You're not sorry because you finally see how much you hurt me. You're sorry because you lost the perfect tool, the one who ran around doing everyt

To save herself, Claire went all in and held nothing back. She posted hundreds of encrypted voice messages and chat logs from her phone straight to social media, every last one of them. In the messages, Adrian coached her on how to manipulate the Duke and get the passwords to the trust's secret funds from him!"Adrian Devaux is the real con artist here, and the most vicious one!" Claire sobbed into the camera, her face a mess of tears and snot. "He never loved Evelyn, and he never loved me either! We were just tools he used to get control of both families!"Back in Europe, Adrian saw the news and completely lost it.Not about to be outdone, he fought back immediately. He had his people leak dirt on Claire. While she was with him, she'd also been secretly sleeping with a rich Hollywood director. And she'd planned to divorce Adrian the moment she got her hands on the Devaux family's money! The scandal surrounding the "love story of the century" dominated every entertainment headline and

Before the Duke could react, I switched on the projector in the living room. The next instant, an emergency video conference with the Ashbourne Group's global board appeared on the wall!Dozens of key shareholders and directors from across the group were on the call, along with members of the press!"Members of the board," I said, facing the camera, my voice calm and utterly commanding. "This is Evelyn, the Ashbourne Trust's fully authorized representative. I am now formally submitting ironclad proof that for the past five years, the Duke of Ashbourne has been falsifying financial statements and embezzling company funds to the tune of tens of millions of pounds!"Every illegal transfer record he had signed was on the screen, clear as day!The shareholders on the call erupted, shouting angry accusations over one another!"As the largest shareholder, with 41.5 percent, I formally move," I said, looking coldly at my father, whose face had turned ashen, "that the Duke of Ashbourne be remov

In all the years it had stood, the old farm cabin had never hosted such a ridiculous, out-of-place group of guests. The Duke wore an expensive handmade English wool overcoat and leaned on a gold-topped cane. Lydia was all dolled up as if she were off to a royal banquet. Claire clung to his arm, holding a handkerchief to her nose as if the place stank."This place is a pigsty!" Lydia's shrill, nasty voice echoed around the tiny living room. "Evelyn, you've really sunk low! A duke's daughter, shacking up in a dump like this with some roughneck who stinks of cow manure!"I sat at the head of the table and sipped my tea at leisure. "Lydia, there's no shame in working with your own two hands. It's far more respectable than being a parasite who steals other women's husbands and helps herself to a dead woman's estate.""You!" Lydia went white, so furious she nearly fainted.Cole swaggered in wearing a loose tank top and dropped a few plates of cheap, burnt hot dogs and several cans of ice-col

Adrian hadn't been bluffing.Only three days later, a carefully planned media and legal attack came roaring across the ocean. The Duke of Ashbourne formally petitioned the High Court in London for temporary control of my assets, claiming that "Evelyn Ashbourne is mentally unstable and under the control of a foreign fraud ring."At the same time, Adrian paid off several major European tabloids. Soon, news reports claimed that I had "gone crazy before the wedding and fled to the American wilderness" and that a "savage cowboy" had brainwashed me into blowing my late mother's fortune.Once the news reached Montana, European paparazzi and reporters swarmed into town like flies that had smelled blood. The farm's new orders from several organic grocery chains were suddenly put on hold. People in town began giving me suspicious looks and keeping their distance."Cole, maybe... maybe I should go stay at a hotel in town for a while."Late that night, I sat under the lamp in the living room, star
