Chapter 259

Author: Hugh White
"Since Scarlett knows you, and you look like a nice person, I'll just tell you the truth." Hayley suddenly looked miserable. "We actually ran away."

Scarlett's eyes went wide.

"We came from a small base nearby. The man running that place was a monster. He did horrible things to the girls there. Not one of us escaped him. We worked ourselves to the bone every day, and on top of that, we were constantly abused by those animals. Scarlett and I couldn't take it anymore, so we ran."

Scarlett stared at Hayley, who was lying with a perfectly straight face.

Oh, wow. Did she just recite some soap opera script?

"Scarlett, we finally escaped, and we were taken in by your kind boss. Things will only get better now," Hayley said, pulling her into a hug.

Scarlett nodded stiffly in Hayley's arms like a prop.

She didn't talk much anyway, so Wilona didn't find anything strange.

Still, Wilona looked doubtful. "But your knife work just now was incredible. Can't you protect yourselves?"

  • The Endgame Chronicles   Chapter 368

After hearing Hayley's words, everyone immediately changed direction and started digging hard toward the left.Time passed second by second.By now, it had been a full day and night since the zombie horde began its assault.Above the basement where Liam and the others were trapped, layers upon layers of zombies piled up, surrounding the area completely. The horde kept forcing its way inward, drawn by the scent of living people. With a loud metallic groan, the basement door began to warp under the pressure.Relentless impacts hammered the metal door again and again, denting it inward with every blow.Bang! With the shriek of tearing metal, a zombie's arm punched straight through the door."Boss!" The people guarding the entrance shouted the moment they saw it.Liam rushed out of the tunnel immediately. When he saw the arm thrust through the door, his already cold expression grew even heavier. He raised his palm, lightning flashing as he blasted the zombie arm into charred rema

  • The Endgame Chronicles   Chapter 367

Liam and Kit's group dug nonstop through the entire night and managed to clear about 65 feet. The physical effort itself was brutal but manageable. The real problem was that they only had three bottles of water. By the next day, all three bottles were gone.Liam couldn't stop it even if he wanted to.With over 100 people, that tiny amount of water barely gave everyone a single sip.The one saving grace was that Liam had an ice-variant ability among his three gifts. He immediately gathered containers and released large ice spikes. But ice-variant gifts melted slowly and poorly. They were combat-oriented, not meant for daily survival. Even after completely draining his energy, it took ten hours of melting just to get half a basin of water.Liam could keep everyone alive, sure, but if you were dying of thirst, waiting for his ice to melt was honestly worse than drinking your own urine."If Leonard were here, that'd be great," Derek muttered hoarsely after digging all night. His

The beam from Hayley's headlamp landed squarely on the zombie train conductor's face.Everything around them was pitch black. The stark white light hit the zombie's dead face head-on, bleaching it into something terrifyingly pale.It looked like the conductor had been bitten and infected by passengers. There was a massive bloody hole in his neck, and the area around the cab door was splattered with dark, dried blood and countless handprints. One look told the whole story. The conductor had been dragged down and torn apart by zombies outside. In his final moments, he had fought his way back into the driver's cab.Not long after, he had turned and locked himself inside.Bang!Hayley pulled out a hammer and slammed it hard into the four corners of the train's windshield. With her raw strength, even reinforced safety glass couldn't take more than two hits. When the zombie conductor inside saw the glass cracking, it went wild with excitement. The moment the glass broke open, it lung

They had to move now!Everyone followed Hayley down the stairs. The elevator had stopped running long ago. A thick layer of dust coated the panels. One step left a clear footprint. That was actually a good thing. It made it easy for Hayley to tell if there were any zombie traces. The flashlight on her helmet swept downward as she descended, scanning the dust below. Only when they reached the bottom did she spot scattered footprints on the underground floor."Raarh!"A zombie lunged out from a pitch-black corner. It was around 6 p.m. There was still a bit of light outside, but not a single trace of it inside the subway station. The only light came from the headlamps of Hayley's ten-person squad.Beams of light cut through the dead silence and darkness of the station, and suddenly, a male zombie in a subway uniform burst out in front of them. Its dead face had almost no flesh left, just tight, darkened skin clinging to bone. Its mouth stretched into a wide O, like the famous pa

  • The Endgame Chronicles   Chapter 364

When the zombies broke through the small building earlier, everyone had retreated to the basement in a desperate race for survival. There were 140 people in the basement: 95 from Milky Way Base, and 45 from Liam's team.Everyone's eyes were fixed on Liam, almost in reverence. They were all waiting for his command.Liam pressed his lips together. Derek handed him a bottle of water. The first thing Liam said after being thirsty for so long was, "How much water do we have left?"Derek's face was smeared with grime and blood from the fighting. He licked his dry lips. "Just this one bottle."Hearing that, Liam set the bottle down. He didn't drink it."Captain Caldwell, we still have two bottles of water here! And ten packs of instant noodles!" Kit stood up from the crowd and brought out all the supplies Milky Way Base had left. The zombie tide had erupted too suddenly. No one had been prepared. These few supplies had been carried by one resident who happened to have them on hand.

  • The Endgame Chronicles   Chapter 363

The zombie was even trying to stuff the delicious intestines back into its own body.Clang!Another blade slammed straight into the back of its skull. The moment the saber was pulled free, a gleaming crystal core popped out. Only then did the poor zombie finally lose the ability to keep chewing its "meal"."Gosh, I wished it rained so it wouldn't stink so badly!" Hayley muttered. She caught the crystal core and kept moving at a run.The entire exchange took less than two seconds.Hayley didn't pause for even a second. Once you've killed enough, it becomes instinct.Under normal circumstances, Hayley used blades whenever possible and saved her gifts for last. Gifts were her trump cards. She fought with pure physical strength first, then used her gifts only when necessary. That was how she conserved stamina and stayed effective longer. This was also the widely accepted approach among the Gifted in the apocalypse. Gifts were an extra lifeline, not something to rely on exclusively
