Chapter 1

“Lia, I accidentally pushed a worker over. He fell into the concrete and died. What should we do?”

Those were Trevor Hampton’s incoherent words to Cornelia Montero when he called at noon.

Cornelia was stunned for a moment but quickly regained her senses. “Stay there and don’t move. I’m coming over.”

“Alright, Lia. I’ll do as you say and stay here.”

Cornelia arrived at the scene after five minutes.

Trevor was shaking all over as he stood by the edge of the roof. When he saw Cornelia, he brightened up.

His lips trembled, and his voice was choked with sobs, but he did not cry.

Trevor was thoroughly shaken, acting as though he was the victim instead of the worker who had fallen into the concrete.

“It’s break time.” Cornelia looked up at the glaring sunlight. Her gaze was focused, and she was deep in thought.

The Montero family’s construction company was one of the few that operated with a conscience and adhered strictly to the eight-hour workday. Every day at 12:00 p.m. sharp, all the workers stopped working and took a break.

That included laborers and managers.

Because she had been involved in that industry for many years, Cornelia knew what the consequences of a worksite fatality were.

Cornelia had always been fair and just.

However, at that moment, she wavered.

She looked over the edge and looked at the body encased in concrete. Only his feet stuck out. The rest of his body was buried in concrete, and Cornelia could not even see the man’s face.

That was why Cornelia could not tell that the person in the concrete was me.

But I was still clearly wearing the limited-edition sneakers she had bought with me.

I guess I already knew the truth.

Cornelia did not care about me, and she never once had any feelings for me.

She had never cared about anything about me. She had probably long forgotten that shoe shopping trip we had.

I watched her standing there on the top floor, coldly calculating the height from which I had fallen into the concrete.

As an old hand in the construction game, she had honed those basic skills early on.

The current construction project was an apartment building titled the Gentlewoman. It was a project geared toward women.

Because it was still under construction, the building’s power lines had not been wired properly yet, and there were no cameras here.

Since it was the lunch break, there were no witnesses nearby.

I saw the confident look on Cornelia’s face.

It was the expression she had whenever she signed a new contract.

She had probably made up her mind on how she would help Trevor bury his crime.

It went against her principles, but she would do it for his sake.

Cornelia spoke up. “Leave for now. I’ll handle this.”

“Lia, you have to help me.” Trevor clutched Cornelia in a panic.

In contrast, Cornelia was unfaltering. “Don’t worry!”

Don’t worry?

I discovered that I could feel sad even though I had just died. I felt wronged. Worse, I even felt heartbroken.

Cornelia escorted her childhood sweetheart away and had him change the supervisor inspection log's time from 11:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

That way, the time of his site visit would be just before the incident.

Thus, the truth of the matter would forever be hidden.

My spirit floated by Cornelia’s side, and I watched as Trevor deleted ‘11:50' and changed it to ‘11:30' in the ‘Time' column of the inspection log.

Then, Trevor followed Cornelia as they left the scene.

I watched as Cornelia clicked on the Memory and looked into my deepest thoughts. There was a photo from last year that was captioned, [Marrying my angel today. I must have saved the world in a previous life.]Another was from two years ago. The caption on a photo of a pot of roses read, [My angel likes roses. I have to plant some myself; only that will mean something.]There was another from three years ago. [I met a girl today. I think I’m in love.]A tear fell on the screen. Then, a shower of them came. I was worried that Cornelia’s phone would become water damaged. But Cornelia did not seem to care. The corner of her mouth quirked up. She seemed to smile, but she was clearly crying. I did not understand. Did she regret it or had she let everything go?After all, she had signed the paperwork to absolve Trevor of all responsibility. Who was she putting on that act for?I sat beside her and sighed. I tried to wipe her tears for her. But my finger only passed through h

Bert reminded Cornelia and Trevor that it was time to get back to official business. All of a sudden, Cornelia started crying. Her finger traced the edge of the photo as she stared at it. Tears splattered on the photo, blurring it. She muttered, “No, this is impossible. Liam has to be okay. He’s just mad at me and playing games.”Trevor hugged Cornelia, pulling her into his arms. He kept comforting her. “It’s my fault, Lia. It’s all my fault. Don’t cry. If you really feel so bad, take it out on me. I would rather die than see you so sad.”Cornelia slowly turned to him. Her eyes were red and swollen. She glared at Trevor, looking like she wanted to eviscerate him. Trevor shuddered, and he did not stop trembling. “Do you blame me, Lia? Do you really love Liam?”Trevor wanted to tighten his hold on Cornelia, but Cornelia slapped him. Without saying anything, Cornelia upped and left. Trevor hurriedly chased after her. Bert let out a long sigh. “What’s the point of crying

I clamped my mouth closed. After a beat, I realized that I was a spirit and did not have to be worried that Cornelia would hear me.Cornelia was texting me again. [If you’re still not coming home, you might as well don’t come home anymore, Liam.]Ah, she was threatening me. What a shame that the Liam Vance who could be threatened by her was already dead. At that point, only his spirit, which would not be threatened by anyone, was floating around her. Plus, this spirit was much smarter than Liam used to be. He would not be threatened and knew that Cornelia might be trying to use this opportunity to suggest a divorce. The police were much more efficient than Montero Construction’s HR department. Half an hour after the police report was made, the police found the victim’s information and contact details for his next of kin. Cornelia notified Trevor the moment she got the news. “Go to the police station now! Go immediately!”Trevor was shocked. “They’ve contacted the next of

“Here, have a taste.” Trevor placed a plate of waffles with ice cream before Cornelia. “Eat up. You loved this so much as a kid.”Cornelia shook her head. “But I shouldn’t have ice cream for breakfast.”Trevor found this strange. “But you love cold stuff like ice cream.”Cornelia sighed and had a mouthful of waffle with ice cream. Cornelia did not know that I loved cold stuff as well. “Have you found the victim’s next of kin yet?” Trevor asked suddenly. “Not yet.” Cornelia only had a bite and nothing more. She took a few sips of warm milk. “The HR department checked with all of the laborers and found that none of them are missing. Could the victim be someone else?“I already had my secretary make a police report.”Trevor nodded. He ducked his head to hide the panic in his eyes. “Once we find the next of kin, you have to be sincere in your apology. With the compensation the company will be offering, I’m sure they will be understanding.” Cornelia added comfortingly, “You’l

I arrived at the construction site later than Cornelia. After I got there, I learned that there was supposed to be an inspection from the city council and realized Cornelia was telling the truth. Indeed, she had things to do and would not know how late she would have to work.A real man knows when to bend and when to stand tall. Since I had accused her falsely, I would have to apologize. There were many ways to do that, so I decided to get home early to cook some of my best dishes for her. The way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, but it was true with women too. That was why I went early to the roof to design the hanging garden for that space. I was afraid that Cornelia would notice me while there, so I had put on the special matching watch. That way, she would not blow up at me even if she saw me. But I died before I finished my design. Trevor had killed me, and Cornelia was doing her best to hide the truth for him. That night, I did not go home or even leave

Cornelia still did not know that I was not in the kitchen. I was also definitely not being a drag.I was simply dead. Suddenly, I really wanted to know how she would react when she found out I had died. Would she be relieved or happy? Or would she be unmoved? Perhaps she would feel sad?It was very unusual for the kitchen to be empty. In the past, I would never ignore her or abandon her no matter how angry I was at her. After all, to her, I was forever devoted to her. She looked in the kitchen and then tried the balcony and study. When she realized I was not home, she angrily picked up her phone and called me. The dial tone said that my number was not in service. Perhaps the concrete I was in was blocking the service. Cornelia lost her patience and tossed her phone aside.Frustration was etched deeply on Cornelia’s face. She turned to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of beer, chugging it down. It felt like she was doing it to spite me. Not long after drinking, her
