Chapter 2

Author: Fluffy Pine
As they left, I floated back to my body and saw the glass shards of my watch that had shattered from the fall. That watch was one of a matching pair, and the other one was with Cornelia.

It was a special day. I still wore the watch although we had been fighting because it meant something to me.

But Cornelia did not even look for it.

…

Cornelia brought Trevor to her apartment.

She had him shower and changed his clothes and shoes. Then, she dumped them all into the washing machine.

The apartment was empty but for them. Dishes from breakfast were still on the dining table.

Before, I would clean up Cornelia’s apartment no matter how busy I was.

But Cornelia did not notice anything amiss. She walked straight into the bedroom and dug out a brand-new suit for Trevor.

She even went with Trevor into the study, where there was a security camera, to write up some work reports.

She had shifted forward the time on the security footage twenty minutes. It gave Trevor a solid alibi to show that they had not been at the scene when the incident happened.

All of it went off smoothly, without a single hitch.

That day at 2:00 p.m., the worker in charge of the concrete mixer discovered the body and reported it to his manager.

Thus, Cornelia, the project manager, and Trevor, the project supervisor, arrived at the police station to give a statement.

On the way there, Cornelia kept coaching Trevor repeatedly.

“What do you say when the police ask what you were doing? You tell them you had just finished your site visit. Everything was normal, and you were going off to lunch. There is proof in the inspection log.

“Tell them that this incident is a product of your supervisory negligence. Take the initiative and admit fault. Say that you’re willing to take responsibility for this mistake.

“Tell them that you wish to contact the next of kin and apologize to them. Suggest that we install the wiring as soon as possible so we can put up security cameras. That way, this would never repeat again.”

After telling Trevor all of that, she comforted him. “Let me handle everything else. Don’t worry.”

It was the second time Cornelia had told Trevor not to worry.

Even I was moved by her confident and reassuring tone and steady gaze, much less Trevor.

Trevor was so touched that he could not speak.

After a beat, he lowered his head and said, “It’s so great to have you by my side, Lia.”

Cornelia chuckled. She patted Trevor’s hand and said, “I’ll always be this great.”

Hearing those corny words, I felt gooseflesh rise even though I was a ghost.

It was just so icky.

I hated hearing such words. Luckily, Cornelia had never tried to talk that way with me.

After all, I was no match for her childhood sweetheart.

Moreover, Trevor and Cornelia were more than childhood sweethearts; they had once been engaged.

But then, Cornelia’s family went bankrupt, and the Hampton family dissolved the engagement. They had even sent Trevor overseas to split him and Cornelia up.

That was when I met Cornelia.

I had just graduated college with a design degree. I had sent my resume everywhere looking for a job. At a job fair, I saw Cornelia sitting alone in a corner.

She had worn a full skirt, and her hair reached her waist. She seemed so lonely sitting in that corner.

At that very instant, I knew that I had fallen in love.

I had never met a quieter and more reserved woman in my life.

More surprisingly, despite her cool demeanor, she blossomed like a flower when she smiled and became all the more gorgeous.

I watched the way she would burn the midnight oil working on a project. I had never seen such a solemn expression before, shot through with ambition.

As if prompted by some mysterious force, I stayed at her company. It was so small that it numbered only a few people.

Cornelia was undeniably capable. Within three years, her family would be at the top again.

When Montero Construction received its first project, Cornelia threw a company-wide celebration.

She had smiled ecstatically and asked me, “You like me, don’t you, Liam Vance?”

I had been floored.

I nodded and admitted to it.

The whole world knew that I liked Cornelia. Except Cornelia herself.

I watched as Cornelia clicked on the Memory and looked into my deepest thoughts. There was a photo from last year that was captioned, [Marrying my angel today. I must have saved the world in a previous life.]Another was from two years ago. The caption on a photo of a pot of roses read, [My angel likes roses. I have to plant some myself; only that will mean something.]There was another from three years ago. [I met a girl today. I think I’m in love.]A tear fell on the screen. Then, a shower of them came. I was worried that Cornelia’s phone would become water damaged. But Cornelia did not seem to care. The corner of her mouth quirked up. She seemed to smile, but she was clearly crying. I did not understand. Did she regret it or had she let everything go?After all, she had signed the paperwork to absolve Trevor of all responsibility. Who was she putting on that act for?I sat beside her and sighed. I tried to wipe her tears for her. But my finger only passed through h

Bert reminded Cornelia and Trevor that it was time to get back to official business. All of a sudden, Cornelia started crying. Her finger traced the edge of the photo as she stared at it. Tears splattered on the photo, blurring it. She muttered, “No, this is impossible. Liam has to be okay. He’s just mad at me and playing games.”Trevor hugged Cornelia, pulling her into his arms. He kept comforting her. “It’s my fault, Lia. It’s all my fault. Don’t cry. If you really feel so bad, take it out on me. I would rather die than see you so sad.”Cornelia slowly turned to him. Her eyes were red and swollen. She glared at Trevor, looking like she wanted to eviscerate him. Trevor shuddered, and he did not stop trembling. “Do you blame me, Lia? Do you really love Liam?”Trevor wanted to tighten his hold on Cornelia, but Cornelia slapped him. Without saying anything, Cornelia upped and left. Trevor hurriedly chased after her. Bert let out a long sigh. “What’s the point of crying

I clamped my mouth closed. After a beat, I realized that I was a spirit and did not have to be worried that Cornelia would hear me.Cornelia was texting me again. [If you’re still not coming home, you might as well don’t come home anymore, Liam.]Ah, she was threatening me. What a shame that the Liam Vance who could be threatened by her was already dead. At that point, only his spirit, which would not be threatened by anyone, was floating around her. Plus, this spirit was much smarter than Liam used to be. He would not be threatened and knew that Cornelia might be trying to use this opportunity to suggest a divorce. The police were much more efficient than Montero Construction’s HR department. Half an hour after the police report was made, the police found the victim’s information and contact details for his next of kin. Cornelia notified Trevor the moment she got the news. “Go to the police station now! Go immediately!”Trevor was shocked. “They’ve contacted the next of

“Here, have a taste.” Trevor placed a plate of waffles with ice cream before Cornelia. “Eat up. You loved this so much as a kid.”Cornelia shook her head. “But I shouldn’t have ice cream for breakfast.”Trevor found this strange. “But you love cold stuff like ice cream.”Cornelia sighed and had a mouthful of waffle with ice cream. Cornelia did not know that I loved cold stuff as well. “Have you found the victim’s next of kin yet?” Trevor asked suddenly. “Not yet.” Cornelia only had a bite and nothing more. She took a few sips of warm milk. “The HR department checked with all of the laborers and found that none of them are missing. Could the victim be someone else?“I already had my secretary make a police report.”Trevor nodded. He ducked his head to hide the panic in his eyes. “Once we find the next of kin, you have to be sincere in your apology. With the compensation the company will be offering, I’m sure they will be understanding.” Cornelia added comfortingly, “You’l

I arrived at the construction site later than Cornelia. After I got there, I learned that there was supposed to be an inspection from the city council and realized Cornelia was telling the truth. Indeed, she had things to do and would not know how late she would have to work.A real man knows when to bend and when to stand tall. Since I had accused her falsely, I would have to apologize. There were many ways to do that, so I decided to get home early to cook some of my best dishes for her. The way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, but it was true with women too. That was why I went early to the roof to design the hanging garden for that space. I was afraid that Cornelia would notice me while there, so I had put on the special matching watch. That way, she would not blow up at me even if she saw me. But I died before I finished my design. Trevor had killed me, and Cornelia was doing her best to hide the truth for him. That night, I did not go home or even leave

Cornelia still did not know that I was not in the kitchen. I was also definitely not being a drag.I was simply dead. Suddenly, I really wanted to know how she would react when she found out I had died. Would she be relieved or happy? Or would she be unmoved? Perhaps she would feel sad?It was very unusual for the kitchen to be empty. In the past, I would never ignore her or abandon her no matter how angry I was at her. After all, to her, I was forever devoted to her. She looked in the kitchen and then tried the balcony and study. When she realized I was not home, she angrily picked up her phone and called me. The dial tone said that my number was not in service. Perhaps the concrete I was in was blocking the service. Cornelia lost her patience and tossed her phone aside.Frustration was etched deeply on Cornelia’s face. She turned to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of beer, chugging it down. It felt like she was doing it to spite me. Not long after drinking, her
