My mother held me at the foot of the car steps for a long time, one hand cradling the back of my head like I was still small.

"Let me look at you." She pulled back and scanned my face the way she had at every visit for four years — checking, always checking, that I was still real. Then her brow creased. "You're pale. And your wolf is standing guard. What happened?"

Nothing got past her. It never had.

"Let's get in. It's cold."
