The cold floor of the Civil Registry Office seemed to tremble beneath my feet. The image of the computer screen displaying Merry Dacko as the lawful wife of Kael Gostav refused to leave my mind, burning away the last fragments of my composure. The five-year marriage I had cherished so dearly had turned out to be nothing more than a cheap performance, with me cast as the most foolish leading character of all.

I thought that woman was Kael's mistress... but it turns out I was the mistress. I was the other woman, I screamed inwardly.

My hands clenched into tight fists, barely containing the rage threatening to erupt.

The marriage certificate I had carefully kept locked away all these years—the document I had once looked upon with nothing but happiness—was nothing more than a worthless piece of paper. A sweet lie Kael had meticulously crafted to use me, keeping me by his side without any legal bond whatsoever.

My hands trembled violently as I pulled the fake marriage certificate from the folder I had brought with me. I stared at Kael Gostav's name and my own, neatly printed across the page—a symbol of the deception I had endured for half a decade.

Rip!

The sharp sound of paper tearing echoed through the room.

Without hesitation, I tore it again.

And again.

Until it became nothing more than tiny, meaningless scraps.

At the same time, my fingers reached for the cool pearl necklace around my neck—the one Kael had fastened there that very morning with such convincing affection. I yanked it off with enough force to snap the clasp, then threw the expensive necklace into the trash along with the shredded remains of the fake marriage certificate.

"Miss? Are you alright?"

The male clerk's voice sounded distant as it broke through the silence.

I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead. My chest felt as though a massive boulder were crushing it, yet I forced myself to remain standing.

I refused to fall apart in front of a stranger.

"May I have a sheet of paper and a pen, sir?" I asked, my voice hoarse as I struggled to keep my trembling body under control. "I want to leave a message for that man."

The clerk looked at me with sympathy.

Without asking another question, he nodded.

"Of course."

He handed me a blank notepad and a black pen.

My fingers gripped the pen so tightly that my knuckles turned white. On the blank sheet of paper, every ounce of anger, disappointment, and humiliation raging inside me poured out in strokes of black ink.

Kael, I never believed you could be this cruel. The man I loved with all my heart has given me the deepest wound imaginable. If I hadn't found the receipt for that extravagant birthday celebration in your suit pocket, your lies would probably have continued to this very day. You should know that I went to Isabella's birthday party last night. I saw you standing beside Merry with the happiest smile on your face.

I thought that was the extent of your secret.

But when I came to the Civil Registry Office to file for divorce, I discovered an even more horrifying truth—my name has never existed in the country's official records. And do you know who your legal wife is? Merry Dacko.

Your performance is over, Mr. Gostav.

For five years, you betrayed me. You truly succeeded in deceiving me and trampling on my sincerity. The two of you built your happiness on top of my suffering.

Today, I take back every bit of love I ever gave you. I am not some pathetic woman for the two of you to walk all over.

Our relationship ends here.

And thank you... for the fake marriage that lasted five years.

I finished writing with ragged breaths.

Slowly, I slipped the gold band from the ring finger of my left hand. For years, I had believed it symbolized sacred love.

Now I knew it was just as fake as the man who had placed it there.

I folded the letter neatly and placed the counterfeit wedding ring inside before sealing it.

"Please keep this," I said, handing the folded letter to the clerk. "Could you contact Kael Gostav this afternoon and ask him to come here personally to collect it?"

The clerk accepted both the letter and the ring before nodding sympathetically.

"Certainly, Miss. I'll make sure he receives your message."

"Thank you."

I turned and walked out of the office.

Every step felt unbearably heavy.

The chilly afternoon air filled my lungs as I descended the building's staircase.

"You bastard, Kael," I whispered.

My voice was swallowed by the roar of the city's traffic as the pain in my heart flared up once again.

The agony struck without warning, so sharp that it forced me to bend over beside my car. I gripped the car door tightly, struggling to suppress the cry of pain lodged in my throat. My pulse raced wildly out of rhythm.

With the little strength I had left, I opened the driver's door and collapsed into the seat. Reaching into my handbag, I took out my heart medication and swallowed two pills without water.

Closing my eyes, I rested my forehead against the steering wheel, waiting for my ragged breathing to gradually return to normal.

When my heartbeat finally steadied, I opened my eyes.

There were no tears left.

The only thing that remained inside me was a cold, dangerous desire for revenge.

I picked up my phone from my bag.

Without the slightest hesitation, I removed the SIM card that contained every contact connected to my old life with Kael and his family.

Without a second thought, I rolled down the window and tossed the tiny chip onto the grounds outside the Civil Registry Office.

Kael no longer had any way to reach me.

From this moment on, the obedient, foolish Aluna was dead.

Taking a long, steady breath, I fixed my eyes on the road ahead.

I shut the car door firmly, turned the ignition key, and pressed down on the accelerator.

The car slowly pulled away, leaving behind the place that had witnessed the complete destruction of my dignity.

"I swear," I whispered to my reflection in the rearview mirror, "those two traitors will pay dearly for what they've done to me. Every tear I've shed... every ounce of pain I've endured... I'll make them repay it a hundredfold."

The morning sunlight in New York filtered through the gaps in the curtains of the hotel suite, casting thin streaks of light across the work desk. I sat facing my laptop with a cup of black coffee slowly steaming beside me. Although my body had been briefly overwhelmed by exhaustion after last night's phone interaction, my mind was now completely clear and under control. The bedroom door opened quietly before Lidya stepped inside, her expression stiffer than usual."Madam," Lidya called as she placed a digital tablet on my desk. "Since six this morning, two black sedans have been parked across from the hotel lobby. Our guards have confirmed that they belong to people sent by Gostav Group."I wasn't surprised. Having lost direct access to communication with me, Kael would naturally choose the invasive methods he was accustomed to: tight surveillance and indirect pressure."Are they trying to get inside?" I asked calmly, taking a sip of my black coffee."Not yet, Madam. But Mr. Kael app

Night slowly descended over New York. After making sure Darren was sleeping soundly in the room next door, a warm blanket wrapped snugly around his little body, I stepped out into the hotel’s living room. My footsteps were slow and careful, unwilling to disturb the sweet dreams of my son, who was the only reason I had to keep living.I turned off most of the lights in the room, leaving only the dim glow of a corner lamp that cast peaceful shadows across the space. My body felt exhausted after an entire day of facing camera flashes, exhausting business meetings, and the emotional pressure caused by Kael’s sudden reappearance. I lowered myself onto the plush velvet sofa, closing my eyes for a moment as I savored the rare silence of the night. However, that tranquility was suddenly disturbed when my private phone on the table vibrated violently. The repeated buzzing against the glass surface shattered the silence of the room.I opened my eyes, reached for the rectangular device, and star

As soon as the door to the VVIP room closed behind me, the noise from the corridor and Kael’s shadow instantly vanished. Darren, who was sitting on the plush sofa, immediately turned his head, his eyes lighting up the moment he saw me enter.“Mommy!” he called cheerfully, proudly showing off the bowl of ice cream in his hands. “Did Uncle leave already?”I offered him a warm smile—a genuine smile I always reserved especially for my little son. I walked closer, sat down beside him, and gently stroked his soft hair.“Yes, sweetheart. Uncle has already left. He was just a guest who came to the wrong address,” I replied softly, soothing his innocent curiosity.Lidya stood a few steps away near the window, holding her tablet with a serious expression. After making sure Darren was once again focused on his ice cream, I signaled to Lidya with my eyes to come closer.“How did the investors respond after the presentation earlier?” I asked in a low voice.“Very positively, Madam,” Lidya whispere

Our footsteps echoed across the red carpet of the five-star hotel ballroom where the business exhibition was being held. The silence left behind by Kael’s earlier reaction still lingered in my mind, but the tiny fingers of Darren, nestled in my grasp, served as an anchor that kept me calm.Lidya walked half a step beside me, occasionally checking the digital tablet in her hand to confirm the event schedule.“Madam Aluna,” Lidya called softly in a professional tone, “Mr. Kael from Gostav Group has just sent an urgent request to the organizers to reschedule a private discussion with us before the main event begins.”I matched her pace, drawing a short breath that felt steady in my chest. My heartbeat was normal and stable—a testament to how the surgeries and years of therapy in Paris had fully restored my physical condition.“Let him wait,” I replied flatly without turning around. “We came here to showcase Alder Corp’s product line, not to deal with the personal panic of a business part

Five years had passed.Yet the searing pain of those old wounds still burned in my chest, just as fiercely as it had on the day Kael's web of lies unraveled in this very city. Setting foot in New York again awakened those haunting memories, creeping back into my mind as though determined to steal away the peace I had fought so hard to find.My presence here today was nothing short of a miracle—one that had come at an unimaginable cost. When I fled to Paris five years ago with my heart in ruins, I discovered another life-changing truth. Inside my fragile womb, Kael's child was growing. The doctors in France confirmed that I was in the early stages of pregnancy while also delivering devastating news—my heart condition had reached a critical stage. Pregnancy combined with severe congenital heart disease was, for many women, practically a death sentence. But I refused to surrender.Using every asset I had managed to secure and invest, I gambled everything. I underwent an advanced heart re

As I stepped out of the Civil Registry building, the crushing tightness in my chest returned with relentless force. The air in New York felt unbearably dull and suffocating. With what little strength I had left and trembling hands gripping the steering wheel, I drove toward the city's main hospital. I needed to see the doctor who had been treating my heart condition for the past three years.Every step along the hospital corridor felt unbearably heavy. The moment I entered the examination room, the physician who had overseen my serious medical condition all these years looked at me with a deep furrow between his brows."You seem extremely distressed, Mrs. Gostav. What's weighing on your mind?" the elderly man asked, studying my deathly pale face.I clasped my trembling fingers tightly in my lap. Hearing the title Mrs. Gostav tore open my wounds even wider. Those words were a cruel reminder of just how foolish I had been for the past five years, believing in a marriage that had turned
