Chapter 4

Author: White Peach
Sam was taken aback when I agreed so quickly because he did not expect it. "But it's three months, and you'll be all by yourself at home…"

"It's fine. I'm used to it," I said with a smile, which he probably had no idea what I was really smiling about. "By the way, you mentioned you have a surprise for me."

"Oh, right."

Sam took out a box from his pocket that contained a very thin silver necklace. There was a very small gold bead pendant on it. It looked so small that it was probably fake. "Happy third anniversary, Honey."

He said it so lovingly to me. I took the necklace from him and had a closer look at it. "How much did you spend on this?"

"It's not that expensive. It's less than $30," Sam replied with a shy smile. "Once I start making money, I'll buy a better one for you."

Sam looked sincere when he made the promise. He frowned slightly, and his eyes filled with guilt and heartache for my predicament. I looked up at his face, a face that I had looked at for three years. Every inch of his face was so familiar to me, but at that moment, it felt like he was a stranger.

That night, I could not sleep, but Sam slept very soundly and deeply next to me. I turned over on my side and looked at him under the night light. He had nice-looking eyes, a chiseled chin, and a high nose. He did not look like an ordinary man at all.

My good friend used to say that my husband looked like those rich heirs seen on television. I laughed at the comment and told her that if he was a rich heir, I would be a rich heiress.

How ironic.

Sam turned out to be a rich heir, but I was no rich heiress. I was just a stupid woman who had been blinded by love.

The next morning, Sam left for work. He even made an effort to tell me that he had a lot of work today and had to work overtime.

After he left the house, I followed behind me by calling a taxi. I got the taxi to tail his cheap bike. Sam rode on the bike for ten minutes, and he turned into a wealthy residential area. My taxi was stopped outside the gates.

The driver asked if I wanted to wait, and I said yes.

An hour later, a black sedan drove out of the residential area. The window was half open, and I could see Sam in the back seat. He was wearing a suit, and he was reading a document with his head lowered.

He looked completely different from the man this morning who was dressed in simple clothes and rode a bike.

The driver grumbled, "That Maybach is worth at least $900,000."

I remained silent as I took my phone out to take a few pictures. After that, I continued following Sam for two days, and I finally managed to piece his other life together.

Sam would ride his bike to the residential area every morning to change his clothes and take another car. After that, he would head to the headquarters of Cassidy Enterprise to work. When he was done with work, he would return to the residential area to change his clothes and come home on his cheap bike.

It was perfect planning. Sam should have been nominated for best actor at the Oscars.

On the third day, I followed him to Cassidy Enterprise to pretend to interview for a job. I saw him walk out when the elevator doors opened.

"Sam, you're here."

I stood at the corner of the corridor and watched as a woman hugged his arm intimately and helped him adjust his tie. When she looked over in my direction, I saw her exquisite features and her Chanel outfit. I had seen her picture in the group chat before.

It was Edie Lamb, Sam's lost love.

Sam looked down at her and smiled softly, while I put my phone on silent mode and took several pictures of them.

They were walking side by side along the corridor. Edie's eyes had tears in them as she held his hand. "You promised to take me on a romantic trip to San Ava, Sam. Can you divorce her during that period? I promise I won't contact you anymore after our three months there."

Edie choked back a sob while speaking, and anyone who heard her would have been touched. Sam hesitated a moment before nodding. "All right."

I watched them until they vanished from my sight. When I turned to leave, I caught myself looking into a mirror. My eyes were red, but my tears did not fall.

It was strange, but I could not cry at all. All I felt was an empty feeling in my chest, as if something had been dug out, leaving it empty. Everyone started to blur around me. I could see people speaking, but I could not hear anything.

That was when I realized that when one had been utterly heartbroken, they would not be able to hear anything around them.

When I returned to our rental home on the poorer side of the city, I started packing my things. After finding out that everything that happened to me was not a joke, but a con game with me as the victim, I no longer cared what his initial purpose was when he married me, nor did I care if he loved me.

None of that was important anymore.

This house was too small to pack in a marriage filled with lies. From this day onward, whatever happened in his world had nothing to do with me.

I laughed. "So you're feeling sorry for yourself right now? And I should be grateful and accept you again in my life because of all these excuses you've been giving yourself?" I did not want to waste any more time with him and got straight to the point."The $1 million you gave me was money I deserved for emotional damage. As for getting remarried, don't even think about it."Sam's breathing got heavier at the other end of the call. "Are you serious, Maisie?""I only have one thing to say to you, Sam. People like you are a waste of air when you're alive, and only cause pollution to the earth after you die.""Maisie, you…"Before he could finish his sentence, I hung up on him. Sam tried to call me multiple times after that, but I did not pick up any of his calls. When he could not get through, he started sending me texts continuously.[Maisie, I was wrong.][Please pick up the call. Let's meet and talk.][What do I need to do for you to forgive me?]I could not take it and fina

Sam leaned back onto the sofa and stared in a daze at the cracked ceiling. He had lived in this house for three years, but had never taken a close look at it. It was only now that he realized that there were water stains on the corners of the walls, the paint was peeling at the window, and the light on the ceiling could fall at any moment.Every time I came home, these were what I had seen, but I never once complained to Sam about them. This made Sam feel that he should have treated me better. He sat in a daze in the house for a long time before he started calling me.When I picked up his call, he said, "I'm back in the country, Maisie. I'm at home now. Where did you go? Did you move?" It was only when I heard his voice that I realized it was Sam. "Oh, it's you. What do you want?"Sam cleared his throat. "Um… About getting remarried, we can still talk about it." Once he started the topic, it was not that difficult to continue. "Even though you were at fault for mentioning divorc

The news spread much quicker than I expected. Some of my close colleagues asked me discreetly, "Maisie, are we going to hear good news about you and Mr. Sellers soon? I think there's something about the way he looks at you."I was shocked. "That's not possible! I would believe you if you told me he looks at me with disdain, but not this. Besides, those are just rumors. Don't believe them."She gave me a knowing look instead. The following week, Shaun kept finding excuses to see me. It would be having coffee, requesting a report, asking about the budget, and buying me supper when I worked too late at night. The reasons he gave were stranger than the last, but none of them were repeated. My colleagues started to give me funny looks, and I heard them gossiping about me in the pantry."Did Maisie get together with Mr. Sellers right after she got a divorce? That's really fast." "Well, she knows her way around men. Why do you think she could become a supervisor so quickly from a low-l

My new office was on the 19th floor with a great view of the river. I spun around in my chair, feeling like I was dreaming, and I said to myself, "Sam must have been a jinx. The moment we got divorced, good things started happening to me."I laughed happily, and even danced and hummed a song. That was when my office door was suddenly pushed open, and I looked right into Shaun's eyes. It was really awkward, and I laughed drily, "Maybe you should knock first the next time before entering my office, Mr. Sellers." Shaun pointed at his ear. "I'm sorry, but you were singing so loud that it hurt my ears." My lips twitched, and I replied in a huff, "Then you should cover your ears."After that, I suddenly remembered that Shaun was not only my senior in university, but also my boss who recommended me for my current position, and I changed my attitude right away with a friendly smile.I pulled out a chair and said, "Please have a seat, Mr. Sellers. I'll get someone to make you a cup of c

The next day, outside the courthouse, Sam was late, and it took me three calls for him to finally arrive. The divorce process was quick as we affirmed our decision to be separated in front of the judge. Before our divorce was official, Sam suddenly said, "It's not too late to stop this if you regret your decision, Maisie."I ignored him and told the judge that my decision was final. Sam tugged at his tie and did the same with a dark look on his face. He acted as if he refused to back down from being challenged. After our divorce was final, I turned to leave, and Sam raised his voice behind me, "Three months. You'll come begging me after three months."I did not stop walking, and Sam watched as I vanished from his sight. He leaned back in his seat in the Maybach and frowned."Did she really agree to the divorce?" Edie's gleeful voice could be heard from the other end of the phone."Yes, she did.""She didn't create a scene over it?""No, she didn't."Edie was silent for severa

Sam was shocked. "Did you follow me?" he asked."If I didn't follow you, I wouldn't have known that I married a rich heir who is on his way to San Ava with his first love for a romantic getaway."Sam stood up suddenly and paced around the house before finally standing in front of me. "Since you found out the truth, there is no point in me hiding anything anymore. It's true that I pretended to be broke. "Edie is my first love, but my family refused to let us be together. They said she was not good enough for me and paid her $1 million to leave me. She took the money."I knew Sam too well, so I knew right away what he wanted to say next. "So, you found someone even poorer than Edie was to rebel against your family and show them your unhappiness, am I right?"He did not deny it. "But I'm not such a bad guy. I've been good to you in the last three years, haven't I? I didn't beat you or yell at you. I made sure you had food on the table…""Food on the table?" I repeated those words
