Chapter 1

Penulis: Chubby Dumpling
The room fell silent. Lilian froze in place, the foot she'd used to kick the door still raised.

Ezra stood there for several seconds before clenching his jaw, his eyes reddening.

"Maybe I remembered it wrong... I was so worried Wallace wouldn't acknowledge me that I got confused." He lowered his voice, then added, "I just didn't expect Wallace to hate Grandpa's old watch that much..."

My mother immediately pulled him to her side and shielded him.

Lilian's expression darkened. "Even if he didn't steal the watch, what kind of attitude was that toward Ezra? He went out of his way to give you something, and you just tossed it aside without a second thought?"

I looked up in confusion. "Did I throw it away?"

My mother sighed. She patted Ezra on the back and gave me a weary look. "You just got back, and you've already scared Ezra half to death. He's lived with our family for 18 years, and overnight, you're taking away the identity he's had all this time. Of course he's scared. Can't you be a little nicer to him?"

I thought about it, then nodded. "Okay."

Lilian stared at me. "Then apologize to Ezra right now!"

"Sure," I answered without hesitation.

But instead, I lay back down and continued scrolling through my phone.

I had no idea how much time passed.

A vein throbbed twice at Lilian's temple. "Why are you still lying there?"

I looked up at her innocently. "I agreed to apologize. I just haven't decided when I'm going to do it yet."

Lilian took a deep breath, but my mother pulled her away before she could say anything else.

…

That evening, Ezra knocked on my door with an earnest expression. "Wallace, Dad told you to go to his study and get a box. He said it's a welcome gift he prepared for you. It's on his desk."

I put down my phone and sat up. "Okay, okay. I'm coming."

Ezra smiled, then turned and walked away. His footsteps quickly faded down the hallway.

I turned around and went back to unpacking my packages.

I had just returned to my wealthy family, so of course I could finally buy everything I had been wanting!

I hadn't even finished opening them when I saw Ezra hurry downstairs.

His face was deathly pale, and even his voice sounded different. "Dad! Wallace went through your study... That bloodstone seal you paid 111,000 dollars for at auction..."

The expression of my father, Victor Bowie, changed instantly, and he started to get up.

Then the butler, Leonard Linch, spoke calmly from the doorway. "Sir, Mr. Wallace has been sitting in the living room unpacking packages for the past hour. He hasn't gone upstairs once."

He paused. "We can pull up the living room security footage."

Ezra froze. Silence settled over the living room for several seconds.

My parents pulled up the security footage.

On the screen, I could be seen crouched on the floor, unpacking packages the entire time. I hadn't even stood up once.

Ezra quickly lowered his head, his voice tense. "I must have remembered it wrong... Maybe one of the maids put it away by mistake. I was just too nervous. I'm sorry..."

Mom pulled him close and patted his shoulder before she turned to me. "Look at how insecure Ezra is because of you. Can't you be more mindful of how you treat him so he'll feel secure?"

I sat on the couch, still holding the pair of headphones I had just unboxed.

I nodded. "Okay. I'll be more mindful."

Then I looked at my parents and Lilian. Everyone had gathered around Ezra to comfort him, and the whole situation felt a little strange.

Even so, it didn't matter. I didn't give it much thought.

Not long afterward, Ezra's bedroom door slammed shut with a loud bang.

A moment later, something shattered inside.

"Are you still willing to call me 'Dad' from now on?" Victor asked.Wallace looked at him for a long time."I heard you," he said, exactly as he had last time.He didn't say "Okay," or "No."...Two years later, Wallace opened his own company, a nonprofit auditing firm with 12 employees and a modest office. They specialized in financial health checks for small and mid-sized nonprofit organizations.Whenever people asked why he'd chosen this line of work, he gave them the same answer. "I have a habit of documenting everything. Figured I should put it to good use somewhere."A note was stuck to his desk: [Document everything.]At first, his coworkers thought he was strange. He photographed every document, recorded every handover, and kept two backups of every financial record. The first time he helped a client uncover a discrepancy in their books, they asked how he'd found it.Wallace pointed to the thousands of screenshots on his computer, all meticulously arranged by date.

Once Ezra's phone was legally seized, the technical team spent two days extracting all its data. When the results came back, the chief of the financial crimes unit stared at them for a long time before finally closing the report."This kid is only 18?"There were six burner accounts on the phone. The screen lit up, and everyone in the living room held their breath. The surveillance footage from the construction site wasn't particularly clear, but what it showed was unmistakable.Ezra walked alone into another room in the commercial building. No one followed him. No one shoved him. No one grabbed him by the neck.He pulled a thick rope from his bag, wrapped it around his wrist again and again, then tightened it until it left bruises.Next, he turned his phone's front-facing camera on himself and repeatedly checked the marks on his neck to see if they looked deep enough. When they didn't look convincing, he added another mark.Throughout the entire ordeal, Wallace wasn't even in the building.Another camera had captured him climbing down from an unfinished balcony ten minutes earlier. At the breakfast table, Ezra set down his cutlery. "Wallace, I can teach you everything I know about running the foundation. The accounts, the procedures, everything. I'll walk you through it step by step."My mother put some food on my plate, then turned and gave Ezra three times as much. "Ezra really is such a big-hearted boy."Lilian glanced at me. "When someone gives you everything they've got, you should think carefully about how you're going to treat them."But she had actually replaced my cheap office chair with a padded leather one. When my father got up, he patted me on the shoulder. "Work hard."I nodded as I chewed my toast. "Okay, okay."…When I arrived at the foundation, the finance department pushed the payment security key and account documents toward me. "Mr. Wallace, please check these and sign the handover form."I immediately replied, "Okay, right away!"Then I turned around and locked the security key and documents in the safe.…That evening, Ezra sent

The Bowies held a grand welcome banquet to celebrate my return.Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead, an entire wall was covered in flowers, and a display board at the entrance read: [Homecoming Charity Gala]At the center of the display was a photo of Ezra with his perfect smile. Beneath it were the words "Bowie Heir, Philanthropy Ambassador."Half an hour before the event began, Ezra came to find me."Wallace, the schedule changed at the last minute. The reunion ceremony has been pushed back, so wait in the side hall for now."I gave him an okay sign. "Okay!"This time, he didn't turn around and leave like he had before. He personally led me to the side hall and pushed me down onto the couch,"Make sure my brother stays safe. Don't let him go anywhere," he instructed the two bodyguards stationed at the door. Before leaving, he asked one more question. "Wallace, the foundation wants to use the story of how you were found for publicity. Is that okay?""Sure."He smiled and
