•Odette•

Everything was sealed and done with. After signing the contract, Draven explained to me how the next few weeks would play out.

I would submit a formal resignation letter to my family’s company with the excuse of taking time for myself and giving Silver complete allowance to do more for the company.

Father wouldn’t think too much about me resigning at this point. Mother might be bothered but she would realize she wouldn’t be able to change my mind eventually.

After that, Draven and I would take our ‘relationship’ public. In order for his grandfather to believe that he wasn’t just pretending to settle down, we’d have to perfect the act of being in love.

Draven said we’d have to choose popular sites for our dates; places where people would see us and surely talk. When the foundation was built, we’d hold a wedding at the back of his family’s house, inviting our family members and the press.

It was all stated in the elaborate 4-week plan PowerPoint he emailed to me after the contract was finalized.

The man was really thorough. It all felt surreal to me. I would be getting married to Draven Lockwood. We’d be staying in the same house. And eventually, we’d have to sleep together in order for me to get pregnant.

I was still skeptical about that part of the contract. I tried swaying his mind towards the idea of a surrogate or literally anything else, but he was adamant about me being the one to bear his child.

Like it was my grand destiny or something like that.

It was almost dark by the time we finished discussing everything and we separated outside the café. I refused all his advances to take me home and practically ran into a taxi to avoid further interaction.

Now that I was in my building, about to step into my house, far far away from that tyrant of a man, my thoughts were getting clearer.

I just signed a devil’s contract with Draven.

After using my key card on the door and stepping into my apartment, my phone dinged. I kicked off my shoes, and dug into my purse to fetch the phone.

[D: Hope you got home safely, babe. ( ˘ ³˘)♥]

“What the fuck?”

Babe? Babe?? Babe???

Who the fuck was his babe? And that damned emoticon!

I ignored the text, not finding any reason to respond to it. As I walked deeper into my home, I shedded off pieces of clothing. From my bag to my coat to my jewellery.

And by the time I reached the room, I was already in my underwear. I was about to walk into the bathroom when my phone dinged multiple times.

Expecting it to be Draven, I picked up the phone with a frown.

[T: Hey, Odette. I haven’t heard from you in a while.]

[T: I’m sorry about what happened. It wasn’t really my intention. I still like you.]

[T: It’s my mother who wants me to be with Silvia. I don’t care about her.]

[T: Can you please respond to me? I know you’re reading my texts.]

[T: Please, Odette. Please.]

“Yeah, right. Blame it on your mother.” I said without thinking after reading Tristen’s messages.

I’ve known Tristen since forever. I couldn’t remember a particular time in my life when he wasn’t there. Even though we were engaged, we’d never gone past holding hands and the occasional pecking.

Not because we weren’t pleased with each other. We’d never really shared a deep connection and only related romantically on a superficial level.

I’d always believed that he was a suitable person and that I was going to marry him and please my family. We’d always been honest with each other. I could say that we were friends.

Of course I would feel hurt after finding out that he was fine with throwing away all of our years together to hook up with Silver because I wasn’t my father’s real daughter.

There was this strong urge I had in me to respond to his texts with a bold “fuck you” in capital letters. But I restrained myself from doing such. Ignoring him would be more appropriate.

Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring.

My phone’s ringtone blasted in my ears and without thinking, I tapped on the green button. Fuck.

“Hello? Odette?” Tristen’s posh accent filtered into my ears.

The deed was already done. I sighed and placed the device against my right ear.

“Hello, Tristen.” I spoke with a formal and distant tone, making it clear for him to realize that I was unhappy talking to him.

“Odette, allow me to explain. I—”

“You don’t need to explain anything. I understand. Your family wants you to be with the real Valmont heiress. That’s not me.” I said sharply.

“No. That’s not it.”

“That’s exactly it. That is literally what my father said on my birthday to everyone. And you stood there while he said it with a feigned guilty expression, hiding behind your mother like you had no say for yourself.”

By the time I finished speaking, I was breathing heavily. The more the memory refreshed in my head, the angrier I got.

“I’m sorry, Odette.” Tristen said after a while of silence.

“Sorry for what?”

I waited for him to say something. I gave him time to realize why I was angry. But he couldn’t. So I hung up and threw my phone on the bed.

I’d wanted him to apologize for leaving me out of the loop. For knowing that I was going to face the biggest humiliation of my life and not giving me a heads-up.

My family had kept me in the dark. He was supposed to be the one to tell me. At least I wouldn’t have been so choked and out of place if I had an inkling of what was to come.

“Haaa…” I let out a heavy sigh, placing my hands on my waist, trying to compose myself.

But it wasn’t entirely Tristen’s fault. He was like me. If his parents wanted him to do something, he would do so without question.

I could admit that I vented to him because there was no one else I could lose my temper with.

When my breathing became steady, I went into the bathroom and took a cold shower. By the time I stepped out, all I wanted to do was rest after the kind of day that I’ve had.

However, the day wasn’t done with me yet. Checking my phone before I got ready for bed, I saw a text from Draven that had been delivered five minutes ago.

[D: Caesar’s Place. The day after tomorrow. 7 PM.]

•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   17: Lash Serum

•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   16: Goody-two-shoes

•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   15: All the best things

•Odette•My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago.I couldn’t ride that one anymore.A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one?Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me.I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I w

•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   13: Are You?

•Odette•After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong.I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival.“Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice.Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his.Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room.
