•Odette•

I could remember something that happened in my first year of college. The school was hosting some kind of event. My class was supposed to host a play and I was the set’s head designer.

About two weeks to the event, we found out that our seniors in their third year were hosting the exact play as us. Same script and knockoff copies of my original designs.

I was livid. So were my mates. I hadn’t seen my parents since I got into college and I had begged them to fly over to the state so they could watch the play and see the largest collection of designs I had made yet.

The seniors were set to perform first. If my parents saw that my designs were the same as theirs when my own class performed afterwards, they would assume I was unoriginal and had wasted their time, even though I wasn’t the one at fault.

I couldn’t have let them be disappointed in me.

So, I had convinced the class rep and had him change the minds of the rest of the class about doing another play. I promised that none of them would have to work on the set and designs along with me. All they had to do was learn the lines of the new script.

Those were the worst two weeks of my life. Coming up with new designs, bringing them to life, and making them in a significant quantity. My hands bled multiple times.

But I did it. The consequence of not creating the best and being the best as a Valmont was my greatest fear.

On the day of the event, my parents didn’t show up. They excused it with the fact that they had a conflict with an influencer who was signed to the company and needed to sort it out that very day.

I was devastated.

At the end of the play during the credits, I had seen someone at the front seat who looked completely out of place.

To this day, I have no idea why he was there. His year and department had absolutely nothing to do with the play. But there Draven Lockwood was, seated front row with the eyes of a lion who had just captured its prey.

He had looked proud, pleased, but unsated. He had this expression that made one think that though he already possessed what he wanted in his hands, he could still milk it for more. Like it was that ‘more’ he was truly interested in.

That look was exactly the same one set on Draven’s face the moment he locked eyes with me when I stepped out of my car at the parking lot of Caesar’s Place.

He had been checking the time on his wristwatch, but after I slammed the door of my car, he lifted his head and saw me.

I flinched on the spot, finding that gaze unsettling and dangerous. If Draven noticed this, he didn’t show it because a wide smile appeared on his lips as he strolled towards me.

“You’re perfectly on time,” he said, picking up my hand. “As beautiful as always, Odette Valmont.” Draven pecked my hand and a strange sensation crawled up my neck.

I quickly retracted my hand back to my side. Draven’s eyes narrowed in displeasure.

Fuck. I messed up. We were supposed to pretend like we were in a relationship. I shouldn’t be pulling back, but I couldn’t pretend to be unfazed when his lips touched my skin and brought on a bizarre feeling.

I could guess that Draven understood my plight as he relaxed his gaze and smiled once again.

“Shall we?” He offered his arm to me. I hesitated for only a second before roping my arm in his.

Draven led the way to the front of the restaurant and we were directed to our table very quickly. I couldn’t help but sigh aloud when I realized that our table was at the center of the restaurant where EVERYONE could see us.

I hadn’t looked at the other guests well but they all had familiar faces to me. They either knew me or they knew Draven or they knew the both of us.

Each of which would be perfect for the plan but God, this entire thing was so awkward.

Draven pulled out a chair for me and helped me sit down, then he settled across from me, still wearing a smile on his face.

But there was a difference in his smile now. Could I say it was… softer?

“You’re very good at acting.” The words flew out of my mouth without thinking and it was balanced between sarcasm and praise.

“Been doing it my whole life.” Draven said casually.

Before I could ask what he meant, a waiter came to take our orders.

“We’ll have the grilled lobster thermidor with a side of seafood ramen.” Draven said for the two of us and my mouth hung in the air.

How did he know that I loved seafood ramen??

“As for wine… We’ll take white. You good with that?” Draven directed the question at me, and I nodded in a state of stupefaction.

“Great. White wine, then.” Draven said to the waiter who nodded before walking away.

“Have you been stalking me?” I said after the passing of a moment.

Draven’s brows furrowed. “Stalking you?”

“How else would you know my exact preference?” I was getting defensive. I knew it. But I had to ask. Underneath the table, my hands were trembling against my knees.

“You flatter yourself too much, Odette Valmont. I just ordered what I liked for two because I don’t like having the other party I’m eating with to have a different dish in front of them. Makes me hungry for their own meal or disgusted by their preference.

“It’s better to just have them eat what I eat.” Draven spoke with a straight expression and a logical tone that made me feel embarrassed for ever thinking that he had stalked me.

“Oh…” was all I could say.

“But I did do some digging up about your past and present to further enlighten me on the subject that is Odette Valmont.” Draven cracked a foxy smile.

“You what??”

•Odette•With the use of my peripheral vision, I watched Draven, finding it difficult to peel my eyes off him. We were seated at the back of one of his cars on the way to meet with his grandfather for dinner.I should be nervous. I should be thinking of how to perfect a loving act with Draven in front of the man. Yet, all I could think about was two nights ago.An incident that I half remembered. I couldn’t remember from the point where Draven had reminded me to pick up my purse in the private lounge. I couldn’t remember how I got home.I damn well couldn’t remember who had taken off my heels and given me a foot massage. Even though I couldn’t remember, I knew that it wouldn’t be anyone other than Draven.Only he would know my address and how to get into my house without my personal assistance. As crazy and criminal as he was. I never thought he would care about me enough to the point where he would rub my feet. I must have been in pain, no doubt about that. Every day in heels from d

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   17: Lash Serum

•Draven•My right lash line hurt like crazy after getting the lashes there plucked by a drunk Odette Valmont. I exhaled through my mouth, trying to ease the pain.I stared at Odette’s dewy eyes and pouty pink lips after she answered my question. She didn’t even act like she’d done any wrong. My lack of follow-up words made her cock her head to one side, letting her thick brown hair cover the right side of her face.“What lash serum do you use?” she asked, her light brown eyes growing brighter as she fixated on my own eyes; my lashes, probably.“Odette’s personal lash-growing serum.” I answered without thinking.“Really??” She bounced on her toes, excited to be told what she must consider a super top secret.“No. That’s a lie.” I pulled her closer to me and stretched a hand to stop an incoming cab.“How could you?” Odette spoke with a betrayed tone.I didn’t look at her because I had already pictured her face in my head, and just the imaginary visuals could send me spiralling. “Keep

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   16: Goody-two-shoes

•Odette•It happened in my first year of high school. My parents had been all up in my business at the time, breathing down on my neck. And that should have been around the time I started to do things in the company, creating my personal designs and refining the ideas I found old in Eve.Of course I hadn’t been paying attention to boys and likes. Even though everyone my age was. My parents had it engraved into my head that I was going to get married to Tristen no matter what.Playing around would only get me in trouble and give me hopes that would get crushed in the long run. I believed them, I obeyed them.Which was why I sent away every boy who came my way. “I have a marriage partner already. Please, find someone else to like.”I had said these words almost a thousand times in my youth. Some of the boys I said then to had just been naturally attracted to me. Most had been attracted to my last name. Either way, I couldn’t be with them.Henry Hawk had come into my life in an interes

•Odette•My hands were tense on the steering wheel as I parked my car. It was a different one from the car I’d driven to see my father days ago.I couldn’t ride that one anymore.A lump formed in my throat as the frightening memory refreshed in my head. They knew my secret? A secret that I’d suppressed so deeply in the back of my mind that I could hardly even remember the details? That one?Fuck whoever thought they could threaten me.I grabbed my purse and alighted from the car. I was dressed in a formal blue gown this evening that went off the shoulder. The length ended around my knees and had a long slit at the back. The unreasonably high heels on my feet were killing me as I strutted, probably because I’ve been on them all day, going from place to place to personally inform and invite people to the wedding. All that, just to have Draven ring me to tell me he wanted me to meet up with his closest friends who’d be present at the wedding. I was to act as naturally as possible. I w

•Draven•“Are we really your friends?” Henry whined, aggrieved, before emptying a shot of vodka. He planted the glass on the drinks table and leaned over to rest his head on my shoulder. His big curly brown hair found its way to my mouth. I frowned and shoved him with my elbow.“Don’t touch me.” The warning was filled with irritation. If the kid knew better he’d behave himself. However, he didn’t.He brought his legs up to the leathery cushion, squeezing his lean build as he knelt on the chair. Just so he could grab my left arm tightly and act spoiled. “Rave, I can’t believe you would do this to us. You don’t love us anymore because of her, right? And you never even told us about her!” While prying off Henry’s lean fingers from my arm, his older cousin, who was the last person in the private lounge with us, spoke up.“Stop being annoying, Hen. This is literally the reason why Rave didn’t tell you in particular about Odette.” Adrian said monotonously, wearing his signature straight

  • The Fake Heiress’s Ruthless CEO   13: Are You?

•Odette•After leaving the garden, I calmly walked into the mansion, navigating through the walkways to get to my father’s study while my heart drummed loudly against my chest. As much as I hated Silver, her independent opinion and actions meant nothing to me. The only things that mattered to me were the reactions and opinions of my parents. Before Silver came into our lives, I used to think that I knew them best. That I could predict their movements and decisions. I was wrong.I knocked on the mahogany door of my father’s private study first before announcing my arrival.“Father, it’s me. Odette.” The fear that I thought I could suppress surfaced when I spoke with a weak voice.Ten whole seconds passed—I counted—before Father granted me the permission to step into his study. I learnt the hard way as a kid that I needed verbal permission before stepping foot into this private territory of his.Even grown, my hand still trembled as I turned open the knob and stepped into the room.
