Chapter 2

مؤلف: Levinne
Elena's POV

The banquet hall went still all over again.

The girl walked in, step by careful step.

My mother's eyes filled almost immediately.

"My child."

She rushed forward and pulled the girl into her arms.

In that single second, I went stone-still.

Because from the beginning of all of it, my mother had not once looked back at me.

The girl bit her lip softly and spoke in a small voice.

"I'm sorry."

"I didn't mean to ruin my sister's engagement banquet."

The tears spilled over while she was still talking.

And the eyes around the room shifted, one by one.

"So she's the real heiress?"

"Then what does that make Elena?"

"A fake. That's all."

The whispers were getting louder, sharper.

I couldn't breathe right anymore, and without thinking, my hand tightened on Alexander's.

Like he was the last thing keeping me from going under.

"Alexander."

My eyes were already burning.

You promised me. You said you'd marry me no matter what happened.

You said you loved me.

You said you'd never leave me.

My voice was shaking, my whole body was shaking. Looking at the cold, distant thing his face had become, I couldn't get anything out except his name, and all the strength I had left went into holding on to his hand.

When Alexander saw me trembling like that, eyes wet and red, he gave me that soft, familiar smile, the one I knew.

And then, slowly, finger by finger, he pried my hand off his.

Slow. Methodical. Cruel.

I just stood there, frozen, watching him.

"What did you think?"

He spoke at last.

He turned his head and looked down at me.

There was nothing left of the man who'd loved me in those blood-red eyes.

"Why do you think I chose you?"

I couldn't breathe. My chest hurt so badly it had gone numb. I looked at that cold face and suddenly didn't recognize him at all.

"If it weren't for that bloodline, you were never fit to stand beside me."

In that instant the blood went cold in every part of my body.

I couldn't believe it.

That these words were coming out of Alexander's mouth.

The boy who'd grown up beside me.

Who'd panicked every time I cried.

Who'd held me and sworn I'd never be hurt by anyone.

That man was standing in front of everyone now, grinding me into the dirt with his own hands.

"No."

I shook my head.

"It's not like that."

"Alexander, you love me, I know you love me."

But he was already frowning, and there was impatience in his eyes now.

"Enough. Don't be stupid, Elena. Get out of my way. Walk out of here on your own."

Then, in front of everyone, he slid the engagement ring off my finger.

I started shaking.

"Alexander."

I reached for him.

He pulled back from my hand before I could touch him.

Like I was something dirty.

Then he turned, and took the other girl's hand.

"Welcome home. My true bride."

That was all he said.

The hall exploded.

"This is unreal. She doesn't actually think Lord Alexander loved her, does she?"

"A fake trying to marry into a vampire House."

"No noble blood, just a regular human. What is she even?"

The voices cut into my ears like knives.

The people who'd flattered me, who'd fawned over me, who'd tried to get close to me, every one of them stood with my family and the man I'd grown up with and helped shove me into hell.

I stood in the middle of all of them, freezing.

"Father?"

I finally turned to him, eyes red.

"You don't want me anymore?"

But he was just frowning.

There was nothing left in his eyes of the man who'd raised me.

"Enough."

His voice was cold.

"You've taken twenty years of her life from her. Stop embarrassing yourself."

Something inside me shut down.

It felt like someone had torn my chest open.

Beside me, someone was already laughing softly.

"She isn't going to try to stay, is she?"

"How ugly. A fake heiress, nothing more."

The eyes on me looked at me the way you look at a cheap clown.

In the end, an attendant came up.

"Miss. Please leave the banquet hall."

I bit down on my lip hard.

"I'm not leaving. This is my engagement banquet—"

A wave of laughter went up the second the words were out of my mouth.

"Yours?"

"You? Deserve this?"

The attendant grabbed my arm.

I was dragged out of there in a mess.

My heel snapped off. My skirt was soaked with spilled wine.

I felt like a puppet with its strings cut. I couldn't fight back, I couldn't do anything.

Without the bloodline, without the name, I'd lost every scrap of love and attention that had ever been mine.

The love I'd thought I had, all those years, had been that thin.

My eyes blurred. I looked back at my family, looked at Alexander, and none of them reacted at all.

Laughter filled the whole banquet hall.

Just before they pushed me through the doors, I turned my head one last time.

Up on the platform, Alexander was sliding the ring, the ring that had been mine, onto another woman's finger.

Elena's POVIn the end, I didn't go with them.My mother stood there, eyes red.As if, only now, she'd finally understood. I was not going to forgive them this time, not the way I would have before."Elena…"Her voice was shaking."We know. We were wrong. The cuffs were worn.My mother's jewelry wasn't the priceless collection it used to be.So. Without their "fated bride," they'd never managed to climb into the vampire world after all.I watched them go, and there was nothing big inside me.Only a thin, distant sense of how strange life could be.That was

Elena's POVJoey hadn't wanted to bring me back for the Council.Ever since I'd woken up, he had kept me away from any news of that world. The nobles. The banquets. The people who'd once driven me to the edge.Joey wanted to put himself between me and all of it.That night, it was raining again.Damp sea air came in through the windows.I was sitting by the window, sorting through my drawings, and Joey was at the desk, frowning at the invitation I'd quietly pulled out of the mailbox. After a long time, he said it quietly."I could just not go."I looked up.He didn't meet my eyes."The Council business is just official. There's no need to attend it.""And," he paused, his voice dropping, "I don't want you running into those people again."The rain kept falling.I looked at him for a long moment. Then I smiled, gently."But you've already declined more than once, haven't you? It'll affect your business, won't it?"Joey went still.I put down the brush, stood up, and walked over to him.

Elena's POVTo let me recover in peace, Joey took me away from the place we'd been staying. He took me somewhere remote. It was near the sea.The weather was always overcast. The rain didn't stop.A grey-blue sky, year-round, hung over the wet mist. The human me probably wouldn't have liked it here. But somehow, after I'd become a vampire, I started to like weather like this. The wind in the middle of the night didn't feel cold on my skin anymore. When the rain came down, I could smell the wet smell of leaves and earth on the air, sharp and clean. The whole world had become quiet and slow.Like, finally, I had room to breathe. That night, after Joey told me how he felt, the air between us shifted into something strange. But it wasn't exactly awkwardness, either.Mostly, I'd started avoiding his eyes.Because every time mine met his, I'd remember that night. The way he'd looked at the floor and held my hand carefully in his.And said, "I don't want to be your friend."Joey, for his part

Elena's POVI never thought I'd actually live. When my mind came back to me, I assumed I was already dead.Everything was black. My whole body felt like it had been ripped apart and stitched back together, even the movement of blood through me hurt, like something burning.I tried to open my eyes. They were too heavy. There was a man's voice, near me. Rough. Low."Please. Wake up. Don't leave me here on my own…"His voice was breaking. Like he hadn't slept in days. For a second I thought it was Alexander.I found out later that the person who'd come for me that day was Joey. He'd been keeping watch outside the manor. He'd been ready to forcibly take me away from there. He just hadn't expected Alexander to bring me to a vampire nobles' banquet.By the time he reached the venue, the whole floor had blown apart. The fire was too thick to see through. He told me the whole banquet hall was in chaos. Everyone was running. He was the only one who'd thrown himself into the wreckage. The only o

Alexander's POVIn the end, even after I pushed for it more than once, the Council didn't have Vicky executed. The truth was simpler than that. They couldn't bear to spill the true Ashbourne bloodline. Not even when she'd colluded with the enemy. Not even when her conspiracy had nearly killed every noble at that banquet.Inside the council chamber, Vicky was on her knees on the stone floor. There were heavy silver shackles on her wrists and ankles. Her face was bloodless. The eyes that had always glittered with calculation and self-satisfaction held nothing now but fear. The Council sat above her.Examining her like a piece of merchandise. Calculating whether it was still worth something."Vicky Ashbourne, you have conspired with vampire hunters. This is unforgivable.""However. In consideration of the fact that you carry the true bloodline of House Ashbourne, the Council decrees that you will be remanded into Alexander's custody.""After you have produced an heir, your punishment will

Alexander's POVAfter that day, I started dreaming about Elena. Often.No. I'm not sure they count as dreams anymore.Because I'm having trouble telling reality from hallucination.I keep thinking she's still here. That if I open the right door, I'll see her sitting there, quietly. She'll look up at me, the way she used to.And softly say my name."Alexander."But every time I open a door, the room is empty.*****I've stopped sleeping at night. The moment I close my eyes, Elena. In the fire.Hanging on to the windowsill with the last of her strength.Half her body almost lost in the flames.Smiling at me anyway. Then her lips moving."I don't owe you anything anymore."That sentence is a curse. It loops in my head, on and on.I've started remembering things I never paid attention to.Toward the end, Elena kept looking at me like she wanted to ask me something. Like she was on the verge of asking, and then stopping herself. Her eyes used to be red.She was clearly being pushed past her
