Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I didn't go upstairs.

I sat in a corner of the lobby with potted plants behind me and the security camera overhead.

It was a good spot. The camera could capture me walking in, sitting down, and never going near the elevators.

I even made a point of getting up and asking the front desk, "What time is it?"

The receptionist hesitated and glanced at her computer. "Twelve-oh-six."

I nodded. "Thanks."

The look she gave me was a little odd, but I didn't care. I needed someone to remember I'd been here, and to remember that I hadn't checked in or asked for a key card.

Clint hadn't hung up the whole time. When he heard me talking to the receptionist, his voice instantly went tight. "What are you doing at the front desk?"

"Asking the time."

"Don't tell the front desk!"

I lowered my eyes. "Why not?"

"What's your problem? Is having my girlfriend cheat on me something to be proud of? Why are you so eager to tell the whole world?"

"But you said Lainey's in there with another guy. Wouldn't it be easier to have the front desk go up and knock?"

"Ray, I don't want to look like more of a fool than I already do. You know me. I care about my pride.

"I'm on this train about to explode, and you're over there talking to me about what's easier. You never used to be like this."

I almost laughed.

What was I like before?

Before, one word from him about a fight and I'd cross half the city to stand in front of him. One word about being broke, and I'd lend him my rent money first. When he got dumped, I drank with him until two in the morning and dragged myself to work the next day with a pounding headache.

It wasn't like I'd never helped him.

He'd just gotten used to it. Used to me showing up whenever he called, used to me never asking why, used to me always being on his side.

But right now, the comments in front of my eyes kept drifting past, line after line.

[He's working on your emotions to stall you.]

[Don't let "seven years" weigh you down.]

[Ask him where the photos came from.]

"Who sent you the anonymous photos?" I asked.

Clint clearly faltered. "An unknown number."

"Send me the number."

"I deleted it."

"Then forward me the photos."

"Ray, can you just go up first? You can look at the photos anytime! They're about to get away!"

"There are cameras in the hotel elevators, and in the hallways too. If they run, it can all be checked."

His breathing turned ragged. "What the hell do you want?"

"I want to know if you're really on the train."

For that one second, there was nothing on the line but faint static.

Then he said, "Ray Owen, do you think I'm lying to you?"

My heart sank. He rarely said my name that seriously. Every time he did, it meant he was genuinely angry.

But I didn't back down. "Switch to video, and I'll believe you."

"I told you, the signal's bad!"

"Send your location."

"My phone's dying!"

"Then take a screenshot of your ticket order with the current time showing and send it to me."

He suddenly let out a cold laugh. "So now you're investigating me? Going over every little detail?"

I didn't reply.

He sounded so agitated it almost seemed real. As if he'd really been cheated on, really been made a fool of, and was really afraid the other man would get away...

"Ray, I never thought the day would come when I'd beg you for help and get interrogated first."

The next second, my phone buzzed. It was the small group chat with our mutual friends.

Clint had posted a voice message. I tapped it and heard his voice, trembling with anger. "Guys, I can't take this anymore. I just asked Ray to help me catch the guy my girl's cheating with, and he's making it so damn hard. Seven years. I was wrong about him."

The group chat instantly blew up.

Three months later, Cassidy asked to meet me.We met at the café across the street from the Prescolt Hotel. When I arrived, she was already sitting by the window. She'd lost a lot of weight. Her black coat hung off her as if part of her were missing. She'd ordered me a cup of warm water. "I didn't know if you drank coffee."I sat down. "Thanks."We sat in silence for a long time.Right outside the window stood the Prescolt Hotel. In the daytime, it actually looked pretty ordinary. Glass curtain walls, a revolving door, guests coming and going. No one could have guessed that a few months earlier, someone on the sixteenth floor had slowly stopped breathing in there.Cassidy spoke up. "The verdict should be coming out soon."I nodded. "Yeah."She looked out the window, her voice soft. "I read the full case file."I didn't respond. She went on, "Lainey didn't die on the spot."My fingers went still."She still had time." Cassidy's eyes slowly reddened. "If he'd just called

I opened my phone, and a birthday reminder popped up.Clint's birthday was just a week away.People always say that losing a partner of many years is no different from losing family.Losing a friend is the same.I cried. Not hysterically, and I didn't fall apart. I just looked at those photos and couldn't hold it in.How could such a good friend change like that?I couldn't understand it.I opened the group chat and scrolled through the messages from back when it used to be lively. Dinners, birthdays, trips, griping about work. Every single one felt like a flake of skin shed from the life we used to have. Before long, Clint's parents tracked me down outside my office building. His mother burst into tears the moment she saw me. "Ray, I know you and Clint are the closest. He's in trouble now, and he's on the verge of a breakdown. Could you please tell the police he didn't mean to implicate you?"I stepped around her.His father blocked my way. "Don't rush off. Clint said he on

The rest of the truth came together piece by piece.By the time Lainey's older sister, Cassidy Wilson, arrived, it was almost dawn. She wore a black coat, her hair pulled back tight. When she heard her sister was dead, she didn't break down sobbing. She just braced herself against the wall and stood there for a long time, her fingernails slowly digging into her palms. When the police questioned her, she gave them some information.Lainey had recently been planning to break up with Clint. Not because of cheating. Because of money.Clint had taken out several online loans using Lainey's identity and transferred over a hundred thousand dollars out of their joint account. When Lainey found out, she demanded he pay it all back within a month and was getting ready to go to the police. On the day of the murder, she'd asked Clint to meet her at the Prescolt Hotel because it was close to her studio. She wanted to show him the evidence face-to-face and end things for good."She texted me

The Prescolt Hotel's security footage was pulled up quickly. In the lobby footage, I entered the hotel at 12:02 a.m. I stood at the elevators for less than ten seconds, then turned around and sat down in the lounge area.At 12:06, I went to the front desk to ask the time.At 12:11, I spoke with the receptionist and the manager. At 12:18, I called the police. From start to finish, I never got into an elevator. I never went to the guest floors. I never left the cameras' view for more than half a minute. The elevator footage also proved that, at no point after midnight, had I ridden any elevator upstairs. The sixteenth-floor hallway footage was even cleaner. No me. Not even my shadow. Not a single trace of me anywhere near 1608.Officer James laid the screenshots out on the table.Clint's crying finally died down. But what really made his face change was footage from much earlier.5:14 p.m.Clint walked into the Prescolt Hotel wearing a baseball cap and a face mask. He kept hi

We were both taken to the police station.Clint sat in a separate interview room. Through the glass, I could see he was still crying. He cried for a long time. Every time someone walked by, he looked up like a victim who'd been wronged in every way possible.I sat on a bench in the hallway holding a cup of hot water, but I couldn't bring myself to take a single sip."Are you and Clint close?" Officer James asked me."We used to be," I said."Used to be?"I was quiet for a few seconds. "After tonight, I'm not so sure."He didn't comment. He just had me walk him through everything from start to finish.I told him Clint had called me. That he claimed he was on a train. That he'd sent me the room number and the code. That he'd refused video, refused to share his location, refused the front desk, and refused to call the police. That he and the group chat had kept pushing me to go upstairs.Of course, I didn't mention the comments. All I said was, "I felt like something was off."

In that moment, my legs nearly gave out. If I hadn't grabbed the sofa beside me, I might have collapsed right there. The comments were real. There was no cheating in Room 1608. Only a dead body.Lainey was dead. She'd died before Clint ever asked me to open that door.Mr. Lehne's face was frighteningly pale. The receptionist clapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide.Officer James came back down quickly. He looked at me, his tone even more serious than before. "Don't leave yet. We'll need you to cooperate with the investigation."I nodded. "I understand."My phone wouldn't stop buzzing. The group chat with our friends had exploded.Steve sent a string of question marks.Steve: [What's going on? Why did the cops go up there?]Steve: [Ray, did you actually call the police?]Steve: [Where's Clint? I can't get hold of him.]I didn't respond. I sat back down on the lobby sofa, my fingers trembling nonstop.Half an hour later, someone burst through the hotel's revolving door.
