Chapter 2

Author: sago pudding‌
I was stunned for a moment.

I was only sixteen when I received that ring.

The sun was shining beautifully that day. Lorenzo had come to find me in a mysterious mood and, as soon as we met, slipped the ring onto my finger.

The ring sparkled all over—it was made of blue diamonds.

I panicked and tried to take it off, but he grabbed my wrist firmly.

"This is the Cammarata family heirloom. Take it!"

The dappled shadows of the trees danced around us, his smile even more dazzling than the sunlight.

Later I found out that his mother had beaten him badly for stealing the ring.

But Lorenzo had declared righteously, "I'm never marrying anyone but Selena. Giving her the ring early or late doesn't matter!"

In the blink of an eye, I had worn that ring for seven full years.

It had slowly become a part of my life, just like Lorenzo himself.

Seeing that I remained silent for a long time, Lorenzo thought I was unwilling to give it up.

Just as he was about to speak, Lena, standing beside him, took his arm first and said softly, "Forget it. Selena has worn it for so long after all."

Lorenzo immediately retorted, "No matter how long she's worn it, it's still my family's possession! I told you I'd let you try it on, and I will."

So it was for Lena's sake that he had come to ask for it.

I understood. I reached out, took off the ring, and handed it over. "Here you go."

Lorenzo froze for a second, as if he hadn't expected me to be so straightforward. A flicker of surprise and uncertainty crossed his face.

I said indifferently, "You're right. It's your family's thing after all. Since I'm not marrying you, it really doesn't suit me to wear it anymore."

Now Lorenzo looked somewhat uncomfortable.

He took the ring and said, "Then… on our wedding day, I'll put it on you with my own hands, alright?"

Hearing this, Lena's eyes flashed with jealousy.

I watched Lorenzo prepare to leave with Lena, then called out to him.

"Lorenzo, now that I've returned your ring, what about the pocket watch I gave you?"

He stopped in his tracks and stared at me in disbelief.

"You want me to give back your token of love? Selena, are you saying you don't want to marry me anymore?"

At that moment, I nearly blurted out a retort—who was the one who didn't want to marry?

I took a few seconds to calm myself. I still wanted to preserve the last shred of my dignity—I didn't want to beg for his love like a scorned woman.

"I just think that watch doesn't suit you anymore," I explained casually.

He laughed, yanked the watch off, and tossed it to me.

"You're right. I've wanted to say that for a long time. That watch is tacky and old-fashioned. Who even wears a watch nowadays?"

"It's not nearly as useful as the cufflinks Lena gave me. Well, next time, remember to give me something better."

With that, he took Lena's hand and turned away.

I didn't chase after him.

I just gently ran my finger over the crack on the watch—a bullet mark.

Back then, after he received that watch, he treasured it dearly and always kept it over his heart.

Later, during a gang war, a bullet shot straight toward his chest. Everyone thought Lorenzo would at least be seriously wounded, if not killed.

But slowly, he pulled the still-warm watch from his chest.

That watch had stopped the bullet and saved his life.

Later, he knelt before me and said, "Selena, without you, I'd be dead. I will never, ever let you down!"

We were so close back then.

But now, even the way he addressed me had become distant.

"Miss Selena."

The maid's worried voice pulled me back from my memories.

I handed her the watch. "Sell it. Just make sure I never see it again."

After that day, Lorenzo never came to see me again.

And there were only four days left until Enzo's and my wedding.

I asked urgently, "Is something wrong with your health? I saw you riding a horse yesterday. Is that why…"Seeing how concerned I looked, he was startled for a moment, then smiled and shook his head. "No."After that, I accompanied Enzo every day.Of course, even though I was busy, I hadn't forgotten about Lorenzo.During that time, I deliberately spread the news that Lorenzo had taken a mistress. Soon the whole city was buzzing with gossip. The society ladies all looked down on Lorenzo's behavior. The matter eventually reached Lady Isabella's ears.Lady Isabella was ruthless. After she returned, she immediately punished Lorenzo with twenty lashes of the whip. I heard he was beaten until he lost consciousness.Afterward, without even waiting for his wounds to heal, she sent him to kneel in the ancestral hall.Everyone knew that Lady Isabella had always doted on this grandson of hers, never even speaking a harsh word to him. This punishment was truly severe. When Lena heard about it, her

His gaze fell directly on my neck. There were a few ambiguous love bites—marks left by Enzo when he had kissed me again and again the night before.Lorenzo stared hard at those telltale marks, his eyes burning with venom. "You slept with him? How could you…"I looked straight into those jealous, rage-filled eyes and found it utterly ridiculous. He was jealous and regretful, but I wasn't naive enough to think he loved me or that he was sorry to see me marry someone else. What Lorenzo regretted was simply that the canary he had always controlled had flown away. What he hated was nothing more than feeling that something belonging to him had been taken."Lorenzo, don't be so full of yourself."I looked at him coldly. "The day you deliberately wrote the wrong name on the marriage application, you should have seen this day coming."My gaze fell on Lena, and I smiled faintly. "It seems you had a good time with your maid last night."I purposely emphasized the word "maid," and sure enough, a f

I followed Enzo back to the bridal chamber. The room was filled with a faint, refreshing scent of osmanthus flowers.Enzo smiled and said, "It's getting late. You should get some rest."Perhaps it was because the tension had finally eased, but I ended up sleeping all the way until noon. When the maid saw that I was awake, she blushed and came over to help me. "Miss Selena, the Godfather said he has already spoken with Lady Isabella. You don't need to see her today. He said you should rest well."After washing up and getting ready, I slowly made my way out of the courtyard. But the moment I pushed open the gate, I saw Lena kneeling right at the entrance. Her face was pale, and she looked utterly weak. Upon closer inspection, her clothes were somewhat disheveled. My heart sank. I knew her appearance meant nothing good.Sure enough, as soon as Lena saw me, she immediately shuffled forward on her knees, grabbed the hem of my dress, and pleaded tearfully, "Miss Selena, please go see Lorenzo

After being injured, Lorenzo had been lying in bed, unable to go anywhere without a wheelchair.I knew it would take less than half a day for the news of Lorenzo fighting his own uncle over a woman to spread like wildfire.By then, not only would he and the Cammarata family be humiliated, but Selena and the Kane family would also become laughingstocks. The church was deathly silent. Everyone held their breath, not daring to make a sound.I slowly walked over to Lorenzo.A flicker of expectation crossed his face. The next second, I raised my hand and slapped him as hard as I could.I put all my strength into that slap. His head snapped to the side.Lorenzo's pupils contracted. He stared at me in utter disbelief. With a cold expression, I said, "You are in no position to speak of my husband that way. What do you take the Kane family for? Do you think we would arrange a marriage without even looking into such matters?"He was stunned for a moment, then quickly realized what I was referrin

The hall fell into complete silence. The guests looked at each other in confusion. At the head of the table, Lady Isabella's face was ashen. Her eyes red, she glared at Lorenzo and roared, "What the hell are you talking about, you bastard?""Today is your uncle's wedding. You cannot make a scene here. Someone, drag him out!"Lorenzo stood frozen, his eyes full of disbelief."Uncle's wedding? How is that possible? It's supposed to be me and Selena…"Several bodyguards pressed down on his shoulders. He was dazed for a few seconds.Just as he was about to be dragged out of the church, Lorenzo suddenly struggled. "Impossible! Selena is my wife!""We grew up together. We've been engaged for years. How could she marry my uncle?""There must be some mistake!""Grandmother! Selena, say something!"I spoke coldly. "How could there be a mistake?"The assistant respectfully held out the marriage documents for me and Enzo, displaying them before everyone. My voice was devoid of warmth. "The applic

That day, my mother took me to meet Lady Isabella. It was also the first time I saw Enzo.Lady Isabella was very pleased with me and gave me many expensive gifts. After the pleasantries were over, she said to Enzo, "Enzo, the camellias in the garden are in full bloom. Selena likes them. Why don't you take her out for a walk?"I softly agreed and followed Enzo outside.Contrary to the rumors, Enzo was neither a hideous beast nor a ruthless demon. He was handsome, elegant, and a true gentleman. In fact, he was so gentle and modest that he didn't seem like a Godfather at all.We walked by the lake and talked about many things. His gentle attentiveness gradually eased my nervous heart.Suddenly, a rather sharp gaze fell upon me.I turned around and saw Lorenzo, who had appeared at some point. When he saw me looking back at him, he slowly walked over.
