Chapter 1

Author: Ninth Beginning
It wasn't until my mom, Lizzie Spencer, and I had finished eating that Alessia Pratt finally pushed open the door to the private room, out of breath.

Alessia wore a slightly apologetic look. "Sorry, the traffic was absolutely terrible..."

Before she could finish, she noticed the leftovers on the table, and her face fell.

"You two already ate?

"Gabriel, I told you. Your mom doesn't like me at all."

She took my hand and pouted, putting on her cutest act.

Normally, I fell for this every time. Whenever she and my mom disagreed, I always took her side, no questions asked.

But today, now that I knew the truth, I felt nothing. I quietly pulled my hand away.

"You're the one who was late. We couldn't exactly let my mom go hungry waiting for you.

"Besides, she's older than you. You should show her some respect."

At that, Alessia's attitude flipped instantly. "Right, I'm the younger one, so I deserve to be pushed around by your mom?

"If that's how you're going to be too, then I guess I'm not good enough for your family! Forget it. I'm calling off the engagement!"

With that, she turned and walked out of the room.

I stayed where I was.

Mom looked a little surprised. "Oh? Not chasing after her this time?"

I shook my head. "I'm tired. Let's go, Mom. I'll drive you home."

I got home at ten that night.

Alessia poked her head out at the sound and shot me a cold sideways look. "Oh, so you still remember where you live?"

I didn't explain myself or try to smooth things over the way I usually did. I just headed straight for the bedroom.

Seeing me ignore her completely, Alessia got even angrier. She grabbed my shoulder. "You don't love me anymore, do you?"

I glanced at her. I honestly couldn't understand how she had the nerve to ask that.

She was the one who'd chosen someone else first. Yet time after time, she could turn around and blame me like this without a shred of guilt.

"Alessia, I'm human. Every human being gets tired eventually.

"I've heard these unreasonable tantrums so many times that I don't feel anything anymore.

"Also, before you start interrogating me, you should ask yourself whether you've done anything wrong."

Alessia froze, and her hand slid off my shoulder.

Maybe it was because I'd never been so cold and serious with her before. Or maybe she'd suddenly remembered what she'd done that day and felt guilty.

Either way, she didn't keep screaming at me like before or accuse me of having a bad attitude. I was off the hook for now, so I went to sleep in the guest room.

That night, her footsteps lingered outside the guest room for a long time. In the end, she didn't dare knock.

The next morning, the smell of breakfast drifted into the guest room. When I came out, I found Alessia fumbling around in the kitchen.

That was a rare sight. Usually, I was the one who made her breakfast or bought it home for her.

When she saw me, she smiled. "You're up! Come try what I made."

Her phone on the coffee table lit up. I looked down and saw a text message. It was from Amos Farrell, her first love.

Amos: [Great. I can't wait to try your cooking.]

So what I'd taken for sincere remorse was nothing more than an afterthought on her way to doing something for him.

When I looked up, Alessia was packing up a soft, fluffy sandwich to go. It looked perfect.

Then I looked at the one on my plate. Scrambled egg was strewn all over it, and even the bread was burnt. It was nothing but a failed practice run.

A wave of nausea hit me. I rushed into the bathroom and dry heaved over and over.

Alessia came over at the sound and, seeing me like that, flew into a rage. "Gabriel, are you serious right now?

"So it doesn't look great. Big deal! Eat it or don't!"

At the sound of Amos's voice, Alessia flinched.Amos glanced at me as though something had occurred to him, and there was a hint of a threat in his tone. "Alessia, what's there to talk about with him? You two are done."Alessia reacted quickly. She wiped away her tears and put on a smile. She held up her hand to show off the cheap-looking ring on her ring finger. "I was just showing off to Gabriel. I wanted him to see that I'm doing great without him and that somebody still wants me."Oh, and Gabriel, we got married. What about you? You'll never find another girl as good as me as long as you live."For a moment, I didn't know what to say. It seemed like whether I played along or not, it wouldn't do her any good.Amos wheeled Alessia away. After I got home, I thought it over for a few days before I finally called the police. It wasn't because I wanted to help Alessia. I simply believed that every crime deserved to be punished. Some time later, I ran into Alessia at the hospital

"It wasn't until I was with him that I realized he only wanted my money."Ever since I got fired, he's been hitting me and screaming at me at the drop of a hat."The food's too salty, I haven't found a job, the job I found doesn't pay enough... He always has some excuse."She was sobbing so hard she could barely speak.Just above her collar, I could see a faint ring of bruises around her neck. That day, after yet another fight, Alessia had finally reached her limit and exploded. But fighting back only brought on an even more violent storm. In the middle of the fight, Amos pushed her down the stairs. She tumbled all the way to the bottom and injured her spine. She'd been in a wheelchair ever since and had never been able to stand again."The doctor said there's not much hope of recovery. I might spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair."I figured this was karma. She'd nearly crippled my leg, and now she was the one who couldn't stand."But even so, that animal won't let me g

I raised an eyebrow. "You came all the way out here in this downpour just for that?"Gareth looked troubled. "Believe me, I didn't want to. But she's kneeling outside my house right now."Look at me. I only got out of the car long enough to open my umbrella, and I got soaked like this."It's been over an hour since the rain started, and she's still out there on her knees."I teased him, "Oh? Is your heart breaking for her?"I'm not getting involved, and I'm not going to hold one deal against you. You don't need to ask me."This is business, after all. A partnership is supposed to be a win-win, so it has to be worth your while."Gareth said he understood, then politely took his leave.Three days later, Alessia was fired for being unfit for the position. After that, I didn't hear anything about her for a long time. The next time I saw Alessia was three months later, when I went to the hospital for a follow-up.From a distance, I spotted her sitting alone in a wheelchair, gazin

At that, Alessia hurriedly crouched down to look at my leg.She apologized over and over and begged again and again. She even pushed Amos's head down, forcing him to apologize and admit fault with her, hoping to win my forgiveness. But no matter what, that was never going to happen. This had nearly cost my mom and me our lives. It was a lesson I wouldn't forget. She held out until my mom came out of surgery, then immediately rushed to the hospital bed, hoping to hear my mom say she forgave her.I'd wanted to stop her, but with my bad leg, I couldn't catch up. Luckily, my mom hadn't woken up from the anesthesia yet, which spared us another round of misery.I called the company's security team and had them send people to escort Alessia and Amos out.Seeing that I'd truly made up my mind, Alessia couldn't keep up her sweet act any longer. She shot to her feet and demanded, worked up, "Gabriel, what exactly do you want from me?"I apologized. I admitted I was wrong. No matter what,

Beside Alessia, Amos was glancing around restlessly. He was clearly nervous too.Still, he tried to reassure Alessia. "It's fine. Don't overthink it. Maybe Ms. Spencer just got caught up with something. Even if she doesn't show, it won't affect your promotion."Alessia frowned, looking around. "That's true, but if I could just show my face to Ms. Spencer and get on her radar, things might go a lot smoother for me down the road."As they talked, the secretary hurried onstage. After a few whispered words in the emcee's ear, the secretary took the microphone. "Ms. Spencer has something urgent to attend to, so all of today's remaining events are canceled. Please treat this as a company dinner. Enjoy the food and drinks."Alessia finally sensed something was wrong. She thought back to our argument earlier and the things my mom had said. With an awkward smile, she blocked the secretary's path. "Hello, I'm the new manager about to take over at our branch office."May I ask how Ms. Spe

Alessia and Amos exchanged a look.A moment later, they both burst into shrill laughter, full of contempt and scorn."Gabriel, did your mom snap or something? Is she so desperate to be chairwoman of this company that she's lost her mind?"I know you. In the three years we were together, your salary went from three thousand dollars a month to four thousand."If your mom were the chairwoman, would I have put up with such a hard life with you all this time?"I gave you a chance. Since that leg of yours doesn't work right anyway, let me help you out!"With that, Alessia stomped on my leg and ground her heel into it viciously, again and again. The pain was so intense my vision went black. My mom tried to push Alessia's leg away, but Alessia turned her foot and pinned my mom's hand beneath it. "You old hag, I've put up with you long enough!"My mom had already endured all their insults, and seeing me hurt broke her heart. Now the physical pain was the final straw. Her heart conditio
