Chapter 2: The First Seed of Ruin

The quiet hum of the air conditioner vibrated through the white walls of the hospital room. I sat still on the edge of the mattress, watching the second hand of the wall clock tick past eight-twenty. Three minutes had passed since Carousel closed the door behind him. Three minutes since he walked away with his fake, worthless legal folder, floating on a cloud of his own arrogance.

I reached out and touched my belly again. Another light, fluttering kick nudged against my palm.

"I won't let them touch you," I whispered, my voice barely a rustle against the clean sheets. "Not this time."

Footsteps echoed outside the heavy door, quick and heavy. The chrome handle clicked downward, and Carousel strode back into the room. He hadn't left the building; he had only stepped into the hallway to make a quick phone call, likely bragging to his mother about how easily he had broken my spirit.

He stood near the foot of my bed, pulling his phone from his gray jacket pocket. His thumbs tapped furiously against the screen. He didn't look at me. He didn't ask if I needed water or if the baby was moving. To him, I was just a banking kiosk with a pulse.

"I called my mother," Carousel said, his tone dry and clipped. "She's already at the bank waiting for the wire transfer to clear. But the bank manager says your primary corporate account requires dual-factor authentication through your personal mobile app. Give me your phone and your security PIN."

I looked up at him, keeping my shoulders hunched inward. My eyes remained wide, watery, and dull, mirroring the helpless, beaten woman he had spent five years creating.

"My security PIN?" I asked, my voice trembling softly. "Carousel... that account holds the emergency reserve funds my father set aside for the girls' tuition and medical care. If we transfer that now.."

"Anika!" Carousel snapped, stepping closer to the bed, his voice sharp and full of fake annoyance. "Are we going over this again? I told you, my mother's catering company is going to triple that money within six months. Do you think I would put our financial future at risk? Do you think I don't care about our daughters?"

He leaned down, placing both hands on the edge of my mattress, towering over me to make me feel small.

"You're being paranoid again," he continued, lowering his voice into that soothing, manipulative purr he always used right before taking something from me. "Your blood pressure is high because you overthink everything. You're pregnant, Anika. Your brain is full of hormones. You can't handle logical business decisions right now. Give me the password, let me handle the bank, and you can just rest."

I stared at his face. I remembered this exact conversation from my past life. Back then, I had felt guilty for doubting him. I had handed over my phone, apologized for being "emotional," and kissed his cheek while he drained every last cent my parents had bled to leave me.

I swallowed hard, letting a small tear slip down my left cheek.

"I'm sorry, Carousel," I whispered, wiping the tear away with the back of my weak, shaking hand. "You're right. I'm just so tired. I don't know why I get so stressed over numbers. You've always taken such good care of us."

Carousel's chest puffed up with immediate pride. The sharp tension in his shoulders melted into a smug, victorious grin.

"That's my girl," he murmured, patting my knee through the blanket with two careless taps. "You don't need to worry about money. That's a man's job. Now, what's the PIN?"

"It's 1026," I said softly, looking down at my hands. "The account username is my main email."

"Good," Carousel said, taking my phone from the nightstand and typing the numbers in rapidly. His eyes sparkled with pure, unchecked greed as the app screen loaded. "Now, approve the login prompt when the alert pops up."

I picked up my hospital tablet from the tray, tapped the screen with a trembling finger, and hit: Approve.

"Done," Carousel declared, tapping his own phone to verify the connection. "I'll handle the rest from my laptop in the car. Mia should be here in twenty minutes with a bag of loose clothes for you. Don't leave this bed until she gets here."

He didn't wait for my reply. He didn't kiss my forehead. He simply turned around, his mind already fixed on the millions he believed were about to flood into his mother's account, and hurried out of the room. The heavy wooden door clicked shut.

I sat in the quiet room, listening to his leather shoes slide down the slick tiles of the hallway until the sound faded completely into the distance.

Slowly, the posture of a weak, crying wife melted off my body. My spine straightened. My shoulders squared. The soft, helpless look in my eyes shattered into something cold, hard, and ruthless.

I reached for my hospital tablet, opening a private, encrypted browser window that Carousel didn't even know existed.

In my past life, I had been naive, but I had never been stupid. Before my parents passed away, my father had taught me how to handle corporate portfolios, stock options, and offshore trust structures. I had buried all that knowledge to be the quiet, traditional wife Carousel demanded.

Not anymore.

Carousel thought he had just gained access to my main trust fund. What he didn't know was that thirty minutes ago—right after I opened my eyes in this bed—I had already initiated an automated capital restructuring order. The primary account he was logging into right now was nothing more than an empty shell with a five-thousand-dollar balance.

I tapped the screen, opening my primary investment portal.

My fingers flew across the glass with lightning speed.

“Sell 50,000 shares of TechCorp.”

“Sell 120,000 shares of Global Energy Holdings.”

“Liquidate offshore mutual fund B-7.”

Line by line, asset by asset, I converted every single stock, bond, and real estate trust my parents had left me into cold, liquid cash. Millions of dollars vanished from the public market, flowing directly into a brand-new, untraceable private bank account under a shell company I had registered two years ago under my mother's maiden name: “Vanguard Supplies Ltd.”

Carousel and his mother, Catherine, were going to execute their wire transfer at noon, expecting ten million dollars to land in their lap. Instead, their transaction would bounce with a humiliating notice of insufficient funds.

A quiet, dark chuckle escaped my throat. "Enjoy the banking fees, Carousel."

My phone on the tray table buzzed loudly, vibrating against the plastic surface.

I walked over and picked it up. A new text message sat on the lock screen from an unsaved number. But I recognized those digits instantly.

[Mia]: “I'm downstairs in the hospital lobby, sweet sister! Carousel told me you were crying again. I brought you a super cute dress to wear home! See you in two minutes! ❤️”

I stared at the little heart emoji at the end of the text.

This was the same sister who had stood beside my husband in my past life, sipping red wine while my daughters froze to death in the snow. The same sister who had bragged about sleeping in my bed for three years while using my money to buy her clothes, her cars, and her luxury jewelry.

I slowly turned the phone off and placed it face down on the tray table.

I walked over to the large glass window of the hospital room and looked out at the city below. The sun was shining bright in a clear blue sky. Cars drove smoothly down the busy streets. People walked along the sidewalks in light jackets, holding warm coffees, completely oblivious to the fact that in twenty short days, the sun would fade, the sky would turn blood-red, and an endless, deadly winter would bury this entire city under ten feet of black ice.

They were all living in a peaceful dream. And Carousel and Mia were busy celebrating a victory they hadn't even won yet.

They thought I was their foolish, obedient little cash cow. They thought they were going to move me back home, lock me in a room, and spend my parents' fortune while preparing for their own bright future.

They had no idea that every dollar they thought they owned had already been erased. They had no idea that while they were busy scheming for small crumbs of wealth, I was building an iron fortress that would outlast the end of the world.

I folded my arms across my chest and gently pressed my hand over my pregnant belly, feeling another strong, steady kick against my palm.

"Let them laugh today, baby," I whispered softly into the quiet room, my voice flat, cold, and utterly devoid of mercy. "Watch how high they climb before I cut the rope.”

Chapter 5: The Silent HarvestThe interior of Carousel’s black sedan was suffocating. Rain rattled against the tinted windows as we sped down the highway, leaving the hotel behind. The dashboard lights cast a dull blue glow across Carousel’s white knuckles as he gripped the steering wheel so hard his skin turned yellow."Did you see her face?" Carousel barked, his sharp voice cutting through the silence like a blade. He didn't turn his head to look at me. His eyes were glued to the dark road ahead. "Eighty million dollars gone in ten seconds! Helena’s family is ruined overnight! How does a blue-chip stock like Vance Tech just collapse without warning?"I shrank into the leather passenger seat, pulling my green coat tightly around my swollen belly. I squeezed my eyes shut, letting my shoulders shake as a quiet, broken sob escaped my lips."It's so terrifying, Carousel..." I wept softly, my voice trembling with desperate, pathetic fear. "I was just sitting there feeling so hurt by the

Chapter 4: The Poisoned SmileMy phone buzzed against the marble kitchen counter at exactly nine in the morning, breaking the quiet hum of our luxury penthouse. I picked it up, staring at the glowing screen.Mia.I let it ring twice, watching the digital numbers flash before I swiped the green button and pressed the speaker to my ear. I let my shoulders slump, letting out a soft, ragged sigh to make my voice sound as weak and exhausted as possible."Hello, Mia," I murmured, my voice trembling just enough to sound fragile."Anika! Good morning, sweet sister!" Mia’s voice chimed through the speaker, dripping with a sickening, sugary warmth. It was the exact tone she used whenever she wanted to steal something of mine. "How are you feeling today? Are you resting comfortably after coming home yesterday?""I'm resting," I replied slowly, pausing to take a shallow, shaky breath. "My blood pressure is still high, and I get dizzy whenever I walk around too much. Carousel left early this morn

Thick velvet curtains hung over the high arched windows, muffling the roar of passing traffic outside. Soft jazz played from a hidden speaker in the corner, and the air smelled faintly of aged scotch, polished wood, and old leather upholstery.I took a slow breath, my hand smoothing down the front of my loose beige coat to cover my swollen waistline. In my past life, Carousel had spent years building a wall of lies between us. He had painted Jules as a dangerous, ruthless monster who only wanted to ruin my life, isolating me until I had no one left to turn to. It wasn't until I was freezing to death in the snow, listening to Carousel's mocking laughter behind a locked door, that I realized Jules was the only man who had ever offered me genuine protection without demanding my soul in return.I walked down the dim hallway toward the secluded corner booth near

Through my paper-thin, torn coat, the sub-zero ice crystals sliced into my face like shattered glass. I threw my body over my daughters, pressing my chest flat against theirs as we hit the hard, frozen snow.Behind us, the massive titanium door of the subterranean bunker slammed shut with a heavy, final thud."No! No, please! Carousel!" I shrieked, my throat raw and bleeding as I scrambled back onto my hands and knees. The snow under me was already stained with my own blood. Just moments ago, inside the heated sanctuary of the bunker, the very shelter I had spent millions of my late parents' inheritance to build, Carousel, my lovely husband had grabbed me by my hair. He had dragged me across the concrete floor, kicking my ribs while I begged for mercy. Mia, my only sister had stood right beside him, holding my daughters by their arms, laughing as she helped him shove us all out into the
