To teach me independence, my parents enforced a fifty-fifty rule from the time I was little. Half the rent for my room. Half the cost of a breakfast sandwich. Even when a high fever sent me to the ER, they added half the bill to my debt and reminded me, "Get a summer job. Don't make a habit of owing people money." I always believed they just wanted me to become independent. Then my younger sister, Chloe, was born. Whenever she broke something and owed Mom money, all she had to do was give her a kiss. "All right, sweetheart. Debt paid." When Chloe wanted piano lessons, she made Dad breakfast once, and he happily paid for an entire year. But every dollar spent on me went straight into the family ledger. On my eighteenth birthday, I looked at the cake and quietly asked Mom, "Can I mow the lawn to cover my share?" She frowned. "Sophie, you pay what you owe. Don't look for shortcuts." "You still owe us $1,704.08 from last month. When are you going to pay it back?" I didn't answer. I only tightened my grip on the letter in my pocket offering me a full scholarship to New York University. Soon. Once I paid it off, my debt to this family would be settled. After that, I would never owe them another cent.

Chapter 1

"Mom, I'll pay you back soon…"

I lowered my head and rubbed my hands together nervously.

"Soon? That's what you always say."

Mom flipped through the family ledger on the dining table.

"When have you ever paid your full share on time? Your father and I have been kind enough not to press you about it."

She looked at my younger sister, who was sitting on the couch with a picture book.

"Chloe, what do we call someone who refuses to pay what she owes?"

Chloe looked up.

"A deadbeat!"

"That's right. My smart girl."

Mom pulled her into her arms.

"We don't want to be like your sister and leave our debts unpaid."

Chloe giggled as they played together on the couch.

I stood beside the table, my cheeks burning.

To them, it was only a joke.

A knock sounded at the door, and I hurried to answer it.

Dad stood outside with a grocery bag in one hand and a large cake box in the other. He was smiling.

The sight of the cake made my eyes sting.

Dad had remembered my eighteenth birthday.

I reached for it, but he handed me the bag of pork ribs instead and raised the cake over his head.

"Chloe, look what Dad brought you!"

Chloe squealed and ran toward him. Dad lifted her with one arm and rubbed his stubbled cheek against hers.

"Daddy, stop! Your beard is scratchy!"

"You want Daddy to stop? Then who should get this cake?"

"You're the best daddy in the whole world!"

Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek.

Mom came over and smiled as she pinched Chloe's cheek.

"Our little piano champion deserves a cake. I'll make your favorite honey-glazed ribs tonight too. How does that sound?"

"Yes!"

Only then did Mom look at me.

"Sophie, go marinate the ribs."

I carried the grocery bag into the kitchen.

The cake was for Chloe's piano competition.

Not for my eighteenth birthday.

At dinner, the table was covered with Chloe's favorite foods: honey-glazed ribs, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and a mango cream cake.

Mom and Dad sat on either side of her, taking picture after picture.

I sat at the other end of the table and ate my vegetables in silence.

"Sophie, come have some cake," Dad said.

I didn't move.

Mom's expression hardened.

"Leave her alone. She's been sulking since she got home, like we've done something terrible to her."

"She asked if mowing the lawn could cover her share of a birthday cake. Now the cake is here, and she won't even eat it."

She turned away and cut Chloe the biggest slice.

After dinner, Mom took out the family ledger as usual.

"The cake was forty-eight dollars, so your share is twelve. Dinner is another ten. That's twenty-two dollars."

"I'll only pay ten."

Her finger stopped over the calculator.

"Now you're bargaining with your parents?"

"I didn't eat the cake. I shouldn't have to pay for it."

"You chose not to eat it!" Mom raised her voice. "You asked about a birthday cake, your father brought one home, and now you're throwing a fit."

Tears slipped down my face.

"Was that cake really for me?"

I looked at Chloe, who was still wearing her piano competition medal.

"Wasn't it for her?"

"So what if it was? No one said you couldn't have any."

"I can't eat it."

I looked at Mom through my tears.

"I'm allergic to mango. Did you forget?"

Mom froze.

But she didn't apologize. She looked away and waved her hand impatiently.

"Fine. Ten dollars. Bring me the money now."

I went to my bedroom and took my cash box from the bottom drawer.

There were only thirty-two dollars inside.

It was everything I had managed to save from working after school and on weekends during my senior year.

After paying for dinner, I would have twenty-two dollars left.

But according to the family ledger, I still owed my parents $1,704.08.

I touched the NYU acceptance letter hidden in my pocket.

I needed to find a summer job as soon as possible.

Once I paid off that debt, I could leave this family for good.
