LEVI'S POV

Thursday's supply meeting lasted two hours.

Ray ran it.

Not because I asked. Not because I suggested it. He arrived before anyone else, reviewed Daniel's files, and when the supply coordinator walked in Ray was already at the head of the table.

I sat to his left. Said nothing.

The coordinator looked between us once. Then looked at Ray. That was that.

Ray moved through the agenda with the precision of someone who had been running operations alone for five years and had simply transfer

RAY'S POVThe briefing was at seven.Me, Levi, Daniel, Chris. The office. Door closed.Daniel looked at the map of the northeast section, looked at the gap timing, looked at the relay station information, and said — "We close the gap.""No," I said."Ray," he said. "Someone is coming through tonight with unknown numbers and you want to — what. Stand there and let them walk in.""We let them talk," I said."That's—" He stopped. "That's not a plan.""It is a plan," I said."It's not a good one," he said."Daniel," Levi said."No," Daniel said. "I'm sorry but no. We have a gap in our security. Someone is coming through it tonight. The correct response is to close it, position wolves and take them when they cross.""And then what," I said."Then we interrogate them," he said."And they tell us nothing," I said. "Because they're a messenger. Messengers don't carry information Daniel. They carry messages. The information is with the person who sent them." I paused. "We need to know who the

RAY'S POVWe slept until noon. When I woke up Levi was already reading something. Of course he was."The patrol logs," I said."No," he said."What then," I said."The summit documentation the coordinator gave us," he said. "Location. Timing. The three contact names.""You promised no work," I said."I promised no patrol logs," he said. "This is different.""It's really not," I said."Ray," he said."Levi," I said.He put the papers down. Looked at me."Fine," he said. "I was reading the summit documentation.""I know," I said. "What did you find.""The location," he said. "It's not actually neutral ground."I sat up. "What.""The summit location the coordinator gave us," he said. "I recognized the coordinates. It's inside Shadowmoon territory.""Inside Shadowmoon," I said."Yes," he said. "The outer ruins. The area just beyond the founding stone." He paused. "Someone chose that location specifically.""The successor," I said."Yes," he said."They know about the document," I said. "A

LEVI'S POVWe got back to the compound by sunrise.Daniel took the retired coordinator to the secure room. The three compound wolves went back to rotation. Ray and I went straight to the office and stood there for a moment just breathing."Someone is coming through the northeast gap tomorrow night," I said."Yes," Ray said."With people," I said."Yes," he said."To deliver a message from someone who calls themselves the successor," I said."Yes," he said."Ray," I said."I know," he said."Victor named a successor," I said. "Before his capture. Before the hearing. Before everything." I paused. "Which means this was never about Victor. Victor was just—""The visible part," Ray said. "Again.""Yes," I said.We stood there."The northeast gap," Ray said. "We don't close it.""No," I said."We let them come through," he said."Yes," I said."And we're waiting on the other side," he said."Yes," I said. "But this time we need to know who they are before we move. Not just take them. Know t

  • The Forbidden Alpha’s Mate   Chapter 47

RAY'S POVWe left at four in the morning.Six of us. Me, Levi, Daniel and three compound wolves whose names I was still learning. The forest was dark and cold and the hidden track was exactly where I had marked it.We followed it northeast. It ran for two hours before it opened into anything. Dense forest the entire way. No markers. No clearings. Just a path that had been used enough times to stay visible but not enough times to become obvious. Then a structure appeared through the trees.Small. Stone. A single building with a light burning inside. We stopped."That's not a settlement," Levi said quietly beside me."No," I said. "It's a single structure. No other buildings. No sign of a community." I looked at Daniel. "The settlement he transferred to. What was its name.""Northgate," Daniel said."Is this Northgate," I said."No," Daniel said. "Northgate is another hour north of here.""So this isn't where he transferred to," Levi said."No," I said. "It's a waypoint. Something betwe

LEVI'S POVThe second supply route took longer than the first.Halfway through Ray stopped his horse and sat very still and said nothing for long enough that I pulled up beside him and waited."There," he said finally. "You see it."A narrow track cutting away from the main route into dense trees. Fresh mud marks. Recent. Multiple trips."That's not on any map," I said."No," he said. "Too narrow for supply vehicles. This is foot traffic." He paused. "Or horse.""We follow it," I said."Not today," he said."Ray—""Not today," he said again. "We're two people without backup in unfamiliar terrain. If someone is using this track and they're connected to what we found in the logs—" He stopped. "We come back properly. With Daniel and enough wolves to cover the exits.""You want to walk away from it," I said."I want to survive it," he said. "There's a difference."I looked at the track. Then at him."Fine," I said. "Two days. Give Daniel time to trace the coordinator first.""If the trace

RAY'S POVThe rotation logs took three hours.Levi and I sat on opposite sides of the desk after dinner with twelve months of records spread between us and two cups of something hot going cold because neither of us remembered to drink them."Here," Levi said. He turned a page toward me. "Month seven. The missing entries aren't random. They follow a pattern. Every fourth Tuesday without fail.""Someone knew the logging schedule," I said. "Knew exactly which entries to remove to create the gap without making it look deliberate.""Which means they had access to the logging system itself," Levi said. "Not just the patrol rotation.""Who has that access," I said."Senior wolves. Beta. Alpha." He paused. "And the patrol coordinator.""Who is the patrol coordinator," I said."He retired eight months ago," Levi said."Eight months ago," I said."Yes," he said."Same time the missing entries started," I said."Yes," he said."Who replaced him," I said."Nobody formally," Levi said. "The role w
