Chapter 2

作者: Arden Vale
The Hall family sent out even more bodyguards to search for her.

The five of us sat in the front hall, staring at each other in silence.

Five or six hours passed in the blink of an eye.

It was almost two in the morning, and still no one found Vivian.

Eventually, the four parents started arguing.

The Halls accused the Dean family of not being sincere about the marriage alliance.

The Deans blamed the Halls for losing their heir at the worst possible moment.

The tension between both sides became so sharp it felt like someone could pull a gun at any second.

“Ahem.” I cleared my throat and stepped forward to remind them, “We can wait, but the longer he stays like this, the lower the chances of retrieving viable sperm.”

The arguing stopped instantly.

“Then, should we retrieve it first?” Carol asked tearfully.

“Yes, retrieve it first and preserve it. Once we find Vivian, we can still proceed later,” Vivian’s mother, Crystal Dean, agreed immediately.

“That works. Tomorrow’s engagement banquet cannot be canceled anyway. Too many important people are attending,” Richard Hall said with a nod.

“Both our families already have leverage over each other. Backing out of this marriage isn’t an option anymore.”

Sean looked furious, but he clearly had no better solution.

Four pairs of eyes turned toward me at the same time.

I flipped open my pricing booklet.

“That part isn’t a problem. But because the procedure involves intimate physical contact, if I perform it in Miss Dean’s place, it counts as standing in as the bride.

“A legal marital agreement would have to be signed, recognizing me as Blake Hall’s posthumous wife. So…”

Sean cut me off sharply.

“Drop the creepy supernatural nonsense. Just tell us how much you want.”

Seeing that Sean looked ready to flip the table at any moment, Crystal hurriedly tugged at his sleeve and gave me an apologetic smile.

“Please don’t mind him. Just charge whatever you normally would.”

“Ten million for a substitute bride. To be paid by the bride’s family.”

I closed my pricing booklet.

The original price written inside had actually been four million.

Sean let out a cold snort, while Crystal paid without hesitation.

“Some traditions exist for a reason. People who break the rules usually end up regretting it.”

I shot Sean a glance, put away my phone, and turned to head back into the bridal chamber.

I completed the ceremony again and lit three candles beside the bed.

Then, on the twenty-seventh line of the marriage document, I carefully wrote Blake’s name.

Once everything was finished, I changed into a thin silk slip and turned toward the man lying on the bed.

Blake lay there motionless, utterly devoid of life.

This wasn’t my first time dealing with the dead. Before this, I had already acted as a substitute bride twenty-six times. I had seen all kinds of bodies.

So instead of feeling afraid, I found myself completely absorbed in admiring how handsome this man was.

He was absurdly handsome—the kind of face that looked like it belonged on a movie screen.

And his body was exactly the type women loved most—lean in clothes, built underneath them.

I honestly couldn’t understand how Vivian had gotten scared enough to run away after seeing a face like his.

My fingers traced slowly down Blake’s jawline before lingering a little longer over the sharp curve of his throat.

“Well, lucky me. Looks like I’m the one sharing your bed tonight, Your Majesty. So, try to take good care of me, okay?”

His skin was ice-cold.

Even with the electric blanket turned on, the front of his body still carried almost no warmth.

I patiently removed his clothes and lay against his chest for a while to warm him up.

“Your chest is ridiculously firm, Your Majesty. It almost makes me want to bite you.”

After a long while, some warmth finally began returning to his body.

My fingers moved over the firm muscles of his chest before slowly sliding lower.

At that moment, I treated him like any other man as I continued touching him and removed the rest of his clothing.

Once Blake was completely uncovered, I began massaging his body to loosen the stiffness and prepare for the next step.

“Your Majesty, those abs of yours are unbelievable. Even lying down, they still look this good. Are you trying to seduce me?”

Words carried power. Even if someone was dead, their soul still deserved respect.

Besides, he was technically my husband now.

Naturally, I didn’t mind flattering him a little. Emotional support mattered too.

After complimenting his long legs, my fingers slowly moved lower.

“Wow… you’re seriously impressive down there, Your Majesty. I don’t think any other women besides me could handle you.”

I opened the small jar beside me and guided the Revival Worm toward him.

With my other hand holding the collection tube, I confidently waited for the results five minutes later.

But the worm kept circling aimlessly as though it couldn’t find where it was supposed to go.

So, I picked it up and placed it directly at the entrance.

This time, it seemed to sense something. The Revival Worm paused at the entrance, wriggled slightly, then suddenly turned and crawled away.

I tried another one and got the same result.

Had he been dead too long? Was his body already too stiff for the process to work?

I massaged him there with both hands before trying again, but the Revival Worm still kept running away.

What was going on?

I was getting so anxious my palms started sweating.

Finally, I steeled myself and lowered my head, deciding to check for myself what condition he was really in.

After struggling with it for a while, I suddenly froze.

Unless I was imagining things, something there had just twitched.

Crystal grabbed Vivian back in one swift motion and hissed through clenched teeth,“Pull yourself together! If a ghost’s here for revenge, it’ll come for me first!”“R-Right… right… sabotaging the brakes was your idea… not mine…”Vivian’s teeth chattered as she shrank into herself, nervously looking around the room. Crystal immediately shot her a vicious glare.Vivian grew nervous and quickly changed the subject and pointed at me.“It’s her! She must be behind this!”As she screamed, she lunged at me like a madwoman, clawing, biting, kicking, and hitting.I refused to back down, twisting her arm while dodging her attacks. In the middle of the chaos, I slammed her down against the edge of the bed.At that exact moment, Blake suddenly opened his eyes. His gaze locked directly onto Vivian’s.Vivian’s whole body froze violently.“AH—!”After a scream sharp enough to split the ceiling apart, her head tilted sideways and she fainted on the spot.“Vivian…?”Crystal hurried over and shook her

The four of them had rushed in like a storm and left just as quickly.Blake’s “corpse” was dumped in my place like unwanted trash, completely abandoned. After learning the truth about his mother’s death and the ugly secrets surrounding his father, he was in low spirits.Other than eating, sleeping, and teaching me how to raise parasites, he often went an entire day without saying a word.“Hey, you’re lying.” I picked up the worm to examine it. “This is obviously the method used for raising a love parasite.”Blake froze for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh.“So you know how too. And here I thought you only knew how to raise Revival Worms.”“I do know how, but I’ve never successfully raised one…” I laughed awkwardly. “What about you? Judging from your technique, you’ve definitely succeeded before.”“Yeah.” He nodded. That made it even stranger.“If you loved Vivian that much, why didn’t you just use a love parasite on her?”Blake turned his head slightly, trying to suppress the g

Before the blood could even be drawn, the nurse was sent away. After a brief discussion among themselves, Carol gave me a quick explanation. The Dean family had fallen from power.Crystal and Vivian were now treating the Hall family as their last lifeline and desperately wanted the marriage alliance to continue.Vivian, eager to save her father, voluntarily returned and was once again willing to bear Blake’s child.Meanwhile, the Hall family feared Sean might reveal information damaging to them while in police custody, so they were also willing to continue the engagement. In short, they no longer needed me to get pregnant. Now they wanted me to use my methods to ensure Vivian conceived instead. For the second time, I led Vivian toward the bridal chamber. My emotions were a complete mess.Wasn’t this basically setting me up for failure? If Blake had truly been dead, I could’ve used the Revival Worm to help the two of them spend one last night together. But unfortunately for me, the man

“What’s going on?”Carol rushed over in a panic.“Don’t tell me… he’s not actually dead…” The two old schemers exchanged a look.Richard let out a cold laugh. “Look how scared you are. It’s not going to affect your plan to keep the child and get rid of the father. But if you’re really worried, feel free to stab my son in the chest a couple more times.”Carol let out a nervous little laugh and lightly smacked his chest. “I’m too squeamish for that. If you want to do it, you do it yourself.”Richard actually ordered one of the bodyguards to retrieve a knife from the car.My legs nearly gave out from fear.I dropped to the floor and desperately shielded Blake with my body.“N-no, you can’t—”“Move aside and we’ll just check.” Richard gripped the knife tightly, murderous intent blazing in his eyes.“Exactly. He’s already dead anyway.” Carol ordered the bodyguards to pull me away.I fought them off like a madwoman. Finally, I gritted my teeth and threw myself completely over Blake, acting

“What exactly are you trying to do?” I lowered my voice as I drew the Deathfeign Parasite out and questioned Blake.Blake sat up slowly, his eyes cold.“I’m going to send every one of them to prison myself. Then I’ll report the attempted murder to the police.”“Then why didn’t you run earlier?” I ground out through clenched teeth. If he had escaped earlier, I wouldn’t have gone from substitute bride to substitute baby-maker.Blake pointed outside, his shoulders tense.“Those twenty bodyguards may not look like much, but their positions cover each other perfectly. Even someone carrying a gun would have a hard time breaking through alone.”I studied the guards more carefully and realized he was right.I had been too impatient.Blake asked what had happened at the engagement banquet, and I told him everything honestly. The more I talked, the more unsettled I became. In the end, I couldn’t help complaining,“Next time you plan something this huge, can you at least warn me first?”“Of cours

“Miss Shaw, how much longer is this going to take? Dawn’s almost here.” Carol’s anxious voice came from outside the door.Startled, I quickly forced down my emotions, took a few deep breaths, and cracked the door open slightly.“It’s not going smoothly. Your son’s body has… a very strong reaction. I still need more time.”“Oh… I see.” Carol exchanged a look with Crystal and lowered her voice. “Do you think she looks similar enough?”Crystal studied me for a long moment, her expression complicated, before shaking her head.“The figure’s close enough, but the face… she’s too pretty and eye-catching.”“Then put heavier makeup on her and keep the stage farther away. Most people won’t notice anyway,” Carol said while gesturing with her hands.“I guess that’s our only option…” Crystal nodded helplessly. What were they planning?“Miss Shaw, we still haven’t found Vivian, so we’ll have to trouble you to attend today’s engagement banquet in her place.”No way. There was no chance I was parti
