Chapter 2

Author: Set Sail
Not because I couldn't afford it.

But why should I have to?

My own daughter had stolen her mother's keepsake to please a man who called me an old bastard, and now I was supposed to spend my own money buying it back for him?

I didn't pay. I turned around and walked out.

However, I made sure to memorize the pawnshop receipt number.

When I got back to my apartment building, I pressed my finger against the scanner. The lock flashed red. Three times, it failed to unlock, the screen lighting up red each time.

"Verification failed."

Then I entered the six-digit passcode.

Wrong again.

A moment later, the door opened from the inside. It wasn't Marissa who had unlocked it.

It was Tyler's mother, Linda Ashford. She was wearing one of my silk pajamas and casually eating popcorn.

"Oh, you're back."

She looked me up and down as if she were greeting a guest.

"Tyler said you haven't been in a good place mentally lately. He was worried something might happen while you were living alone, so we moved in to help take care of you."

I looked past her into the apartment.

A girl in her early twenties sat on the couch with her feet propped up, completely absorbed in a video game. The coffee table was buried beneath takeout containers and trash.

She was Tyler's younger sister, Chloe Ashford.

"How did you get in here?"

"Marissa gave us the passcode." Linda smiled. "We're family, aren't we?"

I walked straight toward the master bedroom.

The moment I pushed open the door, I thought I'd gone into the wrong room. My clothes had been stuffed into black garbage bags and dumped in a corner of the balcony.

My desk now held Tyler's computer setup.

And Diane's memorial portrait had been tossed beside the trash can outside, one corner of the frame shattered.

I bent down and picked it up, slicing my finger on a shard of glass. Blood dripped onto the tile floor one drop at a time.

Behind me, I heard Tyler's lazy voice.

"Mom's back isn't great, so I gave her the master bedroom. As for the picture… Having a dead person's photo sitting in the room was creepy. I told the cleaning lady to throw it out while she was tidying up."

I turned around slowly, clutching the portrait against my chest, as I took a step towards him.

"Throw it out?" I raised my hand. "You call that throwing it out?"

Before the slap could land, someone grabbed my wrist from the side.

It was Marissa.

I hadn't even heard her come in. She shoved me hard.

I stumbled backward, my lower back slamming into the doorframe before I collapsed onto the floor.

"Dad, have you lost your mind?!" She stood protectively in front of Tyler, glaring at me. "Tyler hasn't been in a good emotional state lately! What if you made him sick? Could you take responsibility for that?"

I sat there on the floor. Blood from my palm smeared across the hardwood.

I looked up at the family standing in front of me.

Linda continued munching on her popcorn. Chloe never even looked up from her game. Tyler had an arm wrapped around Marissa.

And me?

I was sitting on the floor of the apartment I had paid for in full, looking like a stray dog nobody wanted.

No. According to the ranking on that seat cover, I ranked even lower than the dog.

I called the ambulance myself. When it arrived, not one of them came downstairs.

The doctor said it was a mild concussion and some soft tissue injuries. Although it was nothing serious, they wanted to keep me for observation.

Three days. A full three days.

Not a single phone call or text message. No one came to visit. No one even brought me food once.

Meanwhile, the family group chat I'd created years ago—the one I'd named "Our Loving Family"—was busier than ever.

The latest message was a long post from Marissa.

"Sorry for disturbing everyone, but my dad hasn't been in a good emotional state lately. He's been yelling at and even trying to hit Tyler at home. We had no choice but to send him to the hospital so he could rest and recover. I hope everyone understands and gives him some space so he can focus on getting better."

The replies came quickly.

"Poor Marissa. You've had it rough with a father like that."

"If you ask me, just send him to a nursing home for a few days. That'll teach him a lesson."

I left the group chat immediately. Out of sight, out of mind.

The next morning, I made a phone call—not to Marissa but to my lawyer, Victor Warren.

"Victor, I need a complete list of every asset under my name, including the ownership details of the apartment.

"I also want to understand the legal implications surrounding inherited debt after gifted property transfers."

Less than two hours after I hung up, the hospital room door opened.

Marissa walked in carrying a bouquet of flowers. The same ingratiating smile I knew all too well was plastered across her face.

"Dad—"

My eyes dropped to the flowers in her hands. They were the kind that they sold outside supermarkets for $10 a bundle.

Marissa stood beneath the billboard, staring up at it for a long time. Then, slowly, she crouched down, buried her face in her hands, and began to cry.Pedestrians walked around her. No one stopped to ask what was wrong.Just like when I'd been lying alone in that hospital bed, and not a single person had come to see me.Three months later, it was early winter. A heavy rainstorm rolled through the city that night.I'd just finished attending a chamber of commerce gala and was walking out of the hotel lobby. My driver had already pulled the car around. A black Maybach sat quietly in the rain. I opened my umbrella and stepped toward the car. Then a figure lunged out from the darkness. She threw herself onto the hood before sliding down and collapsing to her knees in a puddle. It was Marissa.I almost didn't recognize her. She'd lost at least thirty pounds. Her cheekbones jutted sharply from her face. Her eyes were sunken. Her clothes were covered in dried cement stains and carri

Tyler spun around and pointed a finger straight at Marissa."This is all your fault! Every bit of it! You're useless! If you hadn't insisted on marrying me, do you think I'd be in this mess?"Marissa finally broke too. She lunged across the courtroom from the defense table. The two of them crashed into each other and started fighting right there in front of the judge.Court officers rushed forward. It took nearly two full minutes to pull them apart.Tyler's faded sweatshirt had been ripped down the sleeve.Fresh red marks lined Marissa's face. The courtroom had descended into complete chaos.I remained seated at the plaintiff's table without moving an inch. After order was finally restored, the judge turned toward me. "Would the plaintiff be willing to consider mediation?"I stood. "Your Honor, I reject any form of settlement. I ask that the law be applied to its fullest extent."As we left the courthouse, Victor walked beside me. "Mr. Langford, regarding Marissa… Should we

The police called me.I told them I wasn't interested in seeing her.The next day, Linda arrived at my estate with Chloe hobbling beside her on crutches.Yes.An estate. The room in Riverside Commons had only been part of the show.My real home was a standalone estate halfway up the slopes of Crestview Heights, complete with its own garden. Linda clung to the iron gates and wailed, "Mr. Langford! Please! Have mercy on Tyler! He's still young! He just didn't know any better!"If you send my son to prison, your daughter will become a widow!"The security guards stopped them from entering.I stood on the second-floor balcony and asked my butler to bring down the documents I'd prepared in advance.A lawyer's letter.Repair costs for Chloe's accident while driving without a license: $320,000.Rent owed for the Ashfords' illegal occupation of my home: $460,000.Compensation for damage to my personal property, including clothing, liquor, furniture, and emotional damages for the

The moment the elevator doors opened, the entire lobby fell silent.Every eye turned toward me.I was wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my hair neatly combed back without a strand out of place. Step by step, I walked toward her.Marissa looked up at me, her eyes filled with desperation."Dad..."I stopped in front of her and looked down at her for two full seconds. Then I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a flash drive, and handed it to my assistant, Simon Reeves."Put it on the screen."The giant LED display in the lobby lit up. The footage came from the pawn shop's surveillance cameras. The timestamp was unmistakable. 2:00 a.m. last month. On the screen, Marissa slipped nervously into the pawn shop and pulled Diane's Rolex from her pocket. The engraving on the back of the watch was clearly visible beneath the camera."To my husband. Every day with you was a gift."She slapped the watch onto the counter. "How much if I sell it?"A wave of shocked gasps rippled through

"Tyler, just divorce her already. What kind of future could she possibly have now?"Marissa looked at Tyler with reddened eyes. "We're husband and wife. Can't we get through this together?"For a moment, Tyler didn't respond. Then Chloe laughed. "Husband and wife? Tyler told me he never even liked you. He married you for your father's money and your father's apartment. And you actually thought you mattered?"Marissa collapsed onto the couch and stared at Tyler. "None of it was real? It was all fake?"Tyler didn't deny it or explain himself.Instead, he picked up his phone and made a call."Hey, babe. Something came up over here. Can you come pick me up?" After hanging up, he started packing his bags.Marissa grabbed his wrist. "Who did you just call?""What business is it of yours?" Tyler shook her off. "Marissa, this is where we end. Handle the debt situation yourself. And don't drag me down with you."I married you for your father's money. Now that the money's gone, what ex

"This apartment is worth $12 million, paid for in full, and it's in my name. My father-in-law signed the transfer papers himself. He gave it to me willingly."Tyler's friends erupted into exaggerated cheers and jealous whistles. At 7:43 p.m., the front door exploded inward.Twelve men in black T-shirts marched into the apartment one after another. The man with the buzz cut leading them, Marcus Reed, kicked over the champagne tower with a single swing of his boot. Champagne splashed across the floor."Which one of you is Tyler Ashford?"The room fell silent.Tyler froze for three full seconds before finally shouting, "Who the hell are you people? This is my house! I'm calling the cops!"Marcus slapped a loan agreement and mortgage registration document against Tyler's chest."You're the legal owner of this property now, correct? This apartment was used as collateral for a $50-million bridge loan."The previous debtor, Gerald Langford, transferred ownership of the property. Acc
