Edward laughed, releasing a deep breath, the sound easy and content, the kind of laugh a man allows himself only when an evening has gone far better than he expected it to.

"Um... it's late." he said, turning to his wife beside him before looking ahead, his gaze sweeping once more over the emptying hall as though satisfied with everything he'd witnessed that night. "Oh, I'm calling it a night. Amber, we'll have a car drive you to Sag Harbor tomorrow."

"Thank you." Amber said with a nod, smiling

"You ungrateful brat!" Malcolm snapped furiously as he rose from the couch. "I thought life in the countryside would have knocked some manners into you."Amber stood before him, her face down while Zoe and her mother giggled silently in excitement, clearly enjoying the show far more than they were bothering to hide."You're out of control." Malcolm continued, his voice fierce, his finger jabbing the air between them. "You're acting like a slut!""I don't see the problem, father." Amber cut in, her head tilted, calm despite the sting of his words. "Oliver simply gave me a ride home because I'm part of his family."There was something almost theatrical in how steady she sounded, given everything her body had actually been through in the last hour alone. She'd learned long ago that the fastest way to survive a storm in this house was never to flinch first, no matter how hard the wind came at her."Oh! Don't be ridiculous." her father snapped, laughing mockingly. "This engagement is over

His hand hovered softly at her cheek. "You saved my life." he said softly. "This is me repaying you.""Repaying me?" she asked, shaking her head, her voice still thick with tears. "No. You're setting up to fail. If Elizabeth and Edward find out about this, you think they'll keep the engagement?"She closed her eyes, opened them again, willing herself to breathe steady before she added, quieter now, "I don't need this kind of thanks."There was a strange exhaustion settling into her that had nothing to do with the hour or the dancing or the weight of the gown still clinging to her frame. She felt like someone who had spent an entire night fighting battles from every direction — her stepmother, her stepsister, three cruel strangers, and now this and finding that the one person who had stepped in to defend her expected something in return she had never once agreed to give. She thought, briefly, of the letters burning in Elizabeth's candle flame, of the way power in this family always s

"When did I ever say that?" Amber asked, turning to him, her eyes flashing with fresh anger despite the fear still coiled tight in her chest. "I am engaged to your brother. If you have any decency left, you will let me go!" She continued struggling against the locked door, her fingers scraping uselessly at the handle.'I've kissed you." Oliver said, gripping her hand tightly, his voice low, certain, entirely unmoved by her protest. "Marked you. That makes you mine. And my woman can't marry some other guy. I don't even want you engaged to him."There was a strange, unshakable logic to the way he spoke, as though the world simply bent itself around whatever he decided to want. The same way it had bent around him inside that ballroom not an hour earlier, guards moving at his word, guests falling silent at his footsteps, his own father laughing off whatever he chose to do. It should have frightened her more than it did, and some small, stubborn part of her hated how little it actually d

"Stop wasting my time." Oliver said again, his patience thinning visibly now, his hand still extended toward her, unmoving. "Let's go. I have things to do."Amber tilted her head, studying him with something caught between defiance and amusement, refusing to let her hand meet his just yet. "I didn't ask you for a ride." she said, her head tilting further, a small challenge glinting behind her eyes. "You're wasting my time."There was something almost reckless in the way she spoke to him, given everything she now knew about who he was and what he was capable of doing without so much as breaking a sweat. But something stubborn in her refused to fold the moment his name carried weight, the same way it had refused to fold under Zoe's mockery or Marian's taunts. And that refusal seemed to catch Oliver entirely off guard, throwing him for the first time all evening.Nearby guests stared at them in shock and confusion, unsure whether to laugh at the sheer audacity of it or brace themselves

Amber said with a nod, smiling happily. The warmth of the moment settled into her chest in a way that felt almost unfamiliar after the humiliation she'd spent the whole evening bracing herself for. Zoe and her mother were watching in shock and fury, their earlier gloating replaced now by something far more brittle, their eyes tracking every word passing between Edward and the girl they had spent months dismissing as beneath consideration. There was a particular sting in watching someone you've mocked for weeks be handed, in

Edward and Elizabeth started descending the stairs, their presence catching everyone's attention as the last of the applause faded into low murmurs across the hall. Amber turned with a gasp, her earlier composure slipping fast now that the moment she'd been dreading all evening had finally arrived, walking straight toward her in a tailored suit and an easy, unhurried gait."Please don't tell your father about us." she muttered hurriedly, turning from them to Oliver, her voice dropping low, urgent, her fingers briefly closing around his sleeve as though she could physically hold the secret in place. "I... I can't—""Stop playing a victim, okay?" Oliver cut in before she could finish, smiling in a way that gave her no room to argue further. "You owe me, remember? And tonight, you will pay me back." He snapped his eyes teasingly at her, the corner of his mouth tugging upward, entirely unbothered by the panic written plainly across her face, as though her fear amused him more than it mo
