The park was a bit more crowded than usual. Children were running around, playing on swings, and participating in different games. Some couples sat under trees while others walked their dogs.

I sat on the bench, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. Coming here wasn’t a bad idea after all.

“Athena!” June yelled my name from the ice cream truck. “Strawberry or vanilla?”

“She likes both,” July replied before I could answer.

“Didn’t ask you though.” June shot July a look.

I could barely sleep.Every time I closed my eyes, Dexter’s angry face appeared in my head.Honestly, I didn’t know what was going on.Was it the fear of the unknown?Or the fact that I had heard from Dexter again?I just kept rolling around on the bed, restless, wondering if morning was ever going to come.Time was moving slower than usual. At some point around three in the morning, I gave up trying to sleep and just stared at the ceiling.A few minutes later, I stood up and began pacing around my room. This was torture. He shouldn’t have sent me that email.I had been sleeping well these past two days before it came.“Athena, why are you this anxious?” I muttered to myself.Maybe Blake was right.Maybe Dexter wanted to give me my job back.“You must be kidding.”I said it out loud and immediately shook my head.“Don’t give yourself hope.”If Blake hadn’t convinced me that it was better to go and know what was happening than sit at home drowning in curiosity, I would have stayed back

“Athena.”June waved her hand in front of my face.I lowered the phone and looked at them. They had walked back to where I was.“Yes?” I managed to say.“What happened?” June frowned. “One minute we were laughing and the next you’re looking like you’ve seen a ghost.”“It’s nothing. Let’s go.” I tried to move, but July blocked my path.“It can’t be nothing.” July’s eyes narrowed as she glanced at the phone in my hand. “What did you see?”I quickly slipped the phone back into my pocket.“You’re acting funny, Athena,” July said, studying me carefully.I stared at them. They both looked confused and worried.I didn’t want to upset them.“It’s nothing, girls. My boss wants me to run some errands for him despite being on leave,” I lied.June immediately frowned.“Oh, he must really be a jerk. You’re not the only staff in the company. Why bother you on your break?” she hissed.I forced out a small laugh.“He is really a jerk. Let’s go.”We continued walking, but I felt restless. Dexter had b

Vanilla and strawberry, just as you wanted.” June stretched out her hand and gave it to me.“Thank you.”I noticed she had three flavors in hers.“How do you always get the workers to give you three flavors when the highest you can get is two?”“Well, who would say no to this face?” June placed both hands under her chin and gave me a wink.“Oh please.” J

Two days had passed since I lost my job and the life of Mia Roberts ended.I kept the wig and everything I used for my disguise locked up in my wardrobe seeing them made me more angry. The twins had asked why I hadn’t been going to work, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell them I was fired. They were genuinely happy about the new job.Even though I knew it wasn’t really a real job for me, it was just a means to get what I wanted from the El Caminos. They didn’t know that. For them, their big sister could finally take a break from jumping from one part-time job to another. As for Dexter, I hadn’t heard any news from his company. The only information I got was from HR.An email was sent to me that very day while I was having lunch with Blake.A termination of my contract as Dexter’s assistant. Not a day had gone by in these past two days that I didn’t think about how I could have done that job better.Maybe I should have searched the office one more time.Did I even check the car proper

“Babyyyyyyyyy!”“Jesus Christ, Cassie.” I removed the phone from my ear because of how loud she screamed.Cassie’s voice could wake the dead.I placed the phone back to my ear.“You almost damaged my eardrums, Cassie.”“Sorry, baby, but are you okay? Your voice is low?” Cassie asked, her voice immediately softening.“I have a headache,” I muttered, rubbing my temple.“Oh sugar, then you should be resting,” she said. That was my plan before your call came in.I thought the conversation had ended.“Dexter, I’m not happy at all.”I exhaled, already knowing where this was heading.I walked over to my balcony and rested my hands on the rails.“What’s wrong?” I asked.“I want us to change the venue for the wedding.”I closed my eyes briefly. I knew her anger had something to do with the wedding preparations.“What is it this time?”“I no longer want the venue we are using for the wedding. I just found out the president’s daughter used it last year for her birthday.”“Really, Cassie?” I pinc

  • The Forgotten Heiress   Chapter 25

Dexter POV The audacity that girl has. You misplace a document and if I hadn't handled the damages she caused me in that meeting. I could have lost my contract and she has the guts to run her mouth? I scoffed. “Can you imagine that, Fox?” I said to the driver. “I understand you, sir,” he replied. Was she expecting me to give her a treat after the carelessness she pulled? Now she's acting like the victim and I'm the villain. Her audacity should be studied. “I mean, Fox, you've worked with me for a year now. How many times have I shouted and yelled at you?” “Just a few times sir” “Exactly. It's because you do your job well. If she did her job diligently, we wouldn't have an issue.” I scrolled through my phone but my anger kept rising. I treat people like trash, I scoffed again. That's what she said. “Can you imagine that, Fox?” “Miss Mia was just speaking out of emotion. I don't think she meant that.” “Oh trust me, she did.” I shook my head. “Such an ungrateful person.
