Shen POV

I see him before he sees me, or maybe he already has. He’s sitting near the window during breakfast, posture relaxed, coffee untouched in front of him. His eyes are on the ocean, but not really. I know the difference now. I’ve been watching long enough to recognize it. Avelin moves beside me, placing plates on a nearby table, unaware—or maybe aware in the way he’s been lately, quietly alert, watching without making it obvious. I keep my expression neutral, calm, controlled.

Avelin POV That night, I don’t sleep. Not really. I stay close to him, one arm around his body, my hand resting over his chest, feeling his heartbeat, too fast, even in sleep. Even when he’s still. It’s as if his body senses something his mind has not yet caught up to. He begins muttering, initially just fragments, broken sounds. Then, words emerge. “Conrad…” My breath catches. “The board…” A pause. “The company…” I freeze. What company? Who is Conrad? The questions pile up in my mind, heavy and sharp, but I don’t wake him. Not yet. I simply listen because this—this matters. Every word escaping his lips carries a strange, heavy weight. The names he utters are familiar to him in his dreams, yet entirely foreign to my ears. I see the furrow of his brow and the slight trembling of his eyelashes as his mind fiercely battles the ghosts of his past. I tighten my embrace around him, trying to make him feel I am right here, that he is not alone in this darkness. The wind slipp

Avelin POVIt starts with the first scream. I wake up disoriented, heart racing, not understanding where I am or what I’m hearing. Then I realize, it’s Shen. “—No!” His voice breaks through the darkness, raw and sharp, as if something inside him is being torn apart. I sit up immediately. “Shen!” I call, rushing to his side. He’s thrashing violently, body rigid, breath uneven, sweat soaking through his shirt. His hands are clenched so tightly that his knuckles look pale even in the dim light. The moonlight filtering through the gap in the curtains casts heavy shadows across the bed. I see the sheer panic etched on his face, a look of pure terror that cuts through me like a physical blow. I have never seen him look so helpless, so utterly consumed by a force I cannot protect him from. It makes my own chest constrict with sudden, suffocating fear. “Hey, hey, it’s okay,” I say quickly, grabbing his shoulders. He gasps suddenly, eyes flying open. But he’s not seeing me. Not yet.

Almost.Ten minutes later, the man approaches, casual, like it’s coincidence. “Mind if I join you?” His voice is smooth, professional, and too practiced. I gesture to the chair. “Go ahead.”Avelin stiffens slightly beside me, but he doesn’t leave. Good. The man sits. Up close, he looks even sharper, clean lines, no wasted movement, and eyes that miss nothing.“Ja

Avelin POVThe first morning back at the inn feels different. Not because anything has changed, but because everything has. I wake up slowly, the soft light of morning stretching across the room. I don’t move. I just lie there, feeling it, the bond, a steady warmth at the back of my mind. Alive. Constant. Real. Then I turn my head. Shen is beside me, still asleep, one arm wrapped around me as if it stayed there all night without ever loosening. His face is calmer than I’ve ever seen it, no tension, no shadows, just peace. My husband. The word settles deep in my chest.I reach up slowly, brushing my fingers along his jaw. “Shen,” I whisper. His eyes open almost immediately, sharp, alert, then soften when he sees me. “Morning, baby,” he murmurs, his voice rough with sleep.I smile. “Morning.”He pulls me closer without hesitation, pressing his face into my neck as if he needs to make sure I’m still there, like I might disappear if he lets go. I don’t pull away; I never do.The kitchen s

Shen POVI wake up before him. For a moment, I don’t move. Avelin is curled against my side, his hand resting lightly over my chest, just above my heart, as he placed it there in his sleep to make sure I’m still here, still his. The morning light slips through the window slowly, soft gold stretching across the bed, touching his skin first before reaching me. I turn my head slightly and watch him. His lashes rest against his cheeks, his lips parted just a little. There’s a faint crease between his brows, like even in sleep, he feels too much. My husband. The word settles deeper today, more real, more dangerous. I lift my hand carefully, brushing my thumb across his cheek. He stirs, his brows softening, then his eyes open. And when he sees me, he smiles. Slow, gentle, as if this is the first thing he wanted to wake up to. “Good morning, baby,” he murmurs, his voice still heavy with sleep. Something in my chest tightens. “Good morning,” I reply quietly. He shifts closer, pres

Conrad POV The photograph arrives at eleven at night. Rask sends it through the encrypted channel we agreed upon for sensitive updates, no message, no words, just the image. I sit alone in my study, the lights dim, a drink untouched beside my hand. For a few moments, I say nothing, simply stare at the image. The camera captured the beach from the cliff road above, angled just right. The flower arch stands near the shoreline, pale against the darkening sky, delicate, almost absurdly hopeful. Behind it, the inn glows warm and gold, each window lit like a promise. The village appears quiet, almost reverent, as if everyone is holding their breath for tomorrow. They’ve built something beautiful for him. For them. I lean back in my chair, studying the image longer than I should. It irritates me that I recognize effort when I see it. Whoever arranged this little wedding cared. They used what they had: flowers, cloth, light, sea, community, and somehow made it look like something no a
