Ethan Vale knows three rules. Never attract an Alpha. Never miss a suppressant. And never let anyone discover what he really is. For years, pretending to be a Beta mechanic has kept him safe. Then Rex Vance arrives. The racing world calls him untouchable—the undefeated Alpha champion with a temper nobody dares challenge. Ethan calls him a problem. Because the moment Rex steps into his garage, something in the Alpha changes. His eyes linger too long. His wolf won’t stop watching. And suddenly, Rex seems far more interested in the mechanic than the race car sitting between them. Ethan should run. Instead, he makes one mistake. He lets Rex get close enough to discover the secret he’s spent his entire life hiding. Now the Alpha wants answers. Ethan intends to give him none. But when strange accidents begin happening around the racing team, Ethan realizes someone else may already know exactly what he is. And they’re coming for him. The only question is— Will Ethan escape the Alpha determined to claim him… or the danger closing in from the shadows?

Chapter 1

The Paddock Redline

The telemetry line on screen three wasn't just spiking; it was bleeding.

Seventy thousand fans were screaming in the grandstands outside, their collective roar vibrating right through the concrete floor of the Vance Racing garage bay, but all I could hear was the frantic, irregular heartbeat of the Formula engine screaming down the straightaway at two hundred and forty miles an hour.

"The rear-axle dampening is stable, Ethan, leave it alone," Naomi muttered, wiping a streak of black grease from her cheek as she leaned over the spare tire racks.

"It’s not the dampening," I snapped, my fingers flying across the diagnostic terminal. My eyes tracked the microscopic heat signature of the turbine housing. "The pressure fluid in the auxiliary line is bleeding out. The thermal seals are cooking themselves. If he takes the next apex at full throttle, the rear suspension is going to snap."

"Vance is on a flying lap," Naomi warned, her voice suddenly losing its casual edge as she looked at my screen. "He won't abort. You know how he is."

"He’s an arrogant idiot who thinks his bloodline overrides basic physics," I hissed.

I didn't wait for permission. I slammed my palm onto the emergency pit-wall override, cutting straight through the main strategist's channel. "Vance, abort the lap. Pull into the box right now. Your rear-right terminal pressure is down twelve percent. You're about to lose the rear end."

A harsh, rough burst of static exploded through my headset, followed by a low, furious growl that could only belong to one man. "Get off my radio, wrench-monkey. The car feels fine. I’m green in the first two sectors."

"You'll be red in the barrier if you keep your foot down, Rex!" I roared back, my temper flaring. "Box this fucking lap!"

Two seconds later, the high-pitched, deafening shriek of carbon-ceramic brakes echoed down the pit lane. The matte-black and crimson flagship Formula car drifted violently into our garage bay, throwing up a cloud of heat and burning synthetic rubber.

The tire crew swarmed the chassis instantly, but before they could even lift the jacks, the canopy snapped open.

Rex Vance hauled himself out of the cockpit.

At twenty-eight, the reigning Alpha racing champion was an intimidating, suffocating force. He was broad-shouldered, tall, and possessed a wild, volatile temper that kept the team's PR directors in a state of permanent panic.

He ripped his helmet off, his dark hair damp with sweat, his piercing gray eyes scanning the garage like an apex predator looking for a fight. He marched straight toward my diagnostic terminal, the sheer weight of his Alpha aura throwing a heavy, suffocating pressure over the entire garage bay.

"Who touched my radio channel?" Rex demanded, his low, rough rumble vibrating straight through the bones of my chest.

"I did," I said, stepping out from behind the terminal and staring right back into his dark, dilated pupils. I deliberately kept my voice harsh, mocking, and completely devoid of submission. "And you can thank me later for saving your precious million-dollar chassis. Naomi, pull the telemetry logs for the auxiliary fluid."

Naomi pulled a digital diagnostic plug from the car's underbelly and held up the screen.

The numbers were flashing a stark, critical crimson. The rear-right suspension bolt had been less than two laps away from complete thermal disintegration.

Rex glanced at the data, his jaw twitching slightly as the evidence of his own mistake stared him in the face. But instead of backing down, his gray eyes snapped back to me, narrowing with an intense, sharp scrutiny.

"You're a disposable assistant mechanic, Vale," Rex sneered, stepping deep into my space until the heat radiating off his fire-retardant racing suit brushed against my coveralls. "Next time you hijack a priority Alpha channel during a championship practice run, I'll personally throw you off my pit wall. I don't care how good your telemetry predictions are."

"And next time you want to ignore basic physics to satisfy your massive ego, do it on someone else's team, Vance," I hissed back, refusing to step down an inch. "I don't like wasting my time fixing machines for drivers who don't know how to look at a dashboard."

A collective gasp went up from the assistant mechanics at the tire racks. Rex didn't blink. He stepped closer, his nostrils flaring slightly as he took a sharp, deep breath of the air between us.

Suddenly, my blood turned to pure ice.

A cold, oily sweat broke out across the back of my neck, completely unrelated to the heat of the garage. Deep inside my chest, my core shuddered. A violent, agonizing chemical tremor rippled through my veins—the sudden, terrifying warning that my suppression drugs had just catastrophically burned out.

I wasn't a Beta. I was an Omega. A rare, unbonded Omega hiding illegally inside a hyper-masculine, pack-regulated sport where my kind was strictly banned by the racing board. If anyone caught a single whiff of my true scent right now, I wouldn't just lose my license. I would lose my freedom.

Rex’s eyes shifted, a flash of absolute confusion crossing his sharp features as his wolf picked up a microscopic, sweet trace of something unauthorized cutting through the smell of engine grease.

"Vale..." Rex muttered, his voice dropping into a lower, darker register. "What the hell is that smell on you?"

"It’s motor oil, you prick," I choked out, a wave of dizziness washing over me as my eyes flashed a dangerous, unstable amber.

I didn't wait for him to analyze it. I threw my tools onto the workbench, turned on my heel, and bolted out the back of the garage, slipping into the dim, restricted security corridors before the scent could explode through my clothes.

Panting, my vision blurring with an unbidden, feverish heat, I burst into the elite, private driver’s locker room. I knew the track briefing was happening on the far side of the paddock.

The room was entirely empty.

I stumbled toward the secure stalls, my limbs trembling as the raw, sweet aroma of an Omega heat began to bleed heavily through my skin.

I was trapped. I had no blockers left in my pack. My eyes frantically scanned the lockers until they landed on Rex’s private stall. Hanging from a chrome hook was his heavy leather racing jacket—damp with his sweat, completely saturated with his dark, metallic Alpha pheromones.

Driven by pure, primal instinct, I ripped the heavy leather off the hanger and collapsed onto the floor of the stall.

I crushed the jacket tightly to my chest, burying my face deep into the collar.

I inhaled sharply, letting his overpowering Alpha scent flood my lungs. It was toxic, but it worked. The sheer strength of his dominant predator pheromones acted like a temporary shield, masking the sweet, vulnerable aroma of my heat before it could fill the entire room.

I closed my eyes, dragging the rough leather against my burning neck, caught in a desperate, forbidden haze of survival.

Click.

The electronic lock on the main door disengaging cut through the quiet room like a gunshot.

The heavy door swung open.

The air froze in my throat.

Rex Vance stood in the doorway, his team shirt stripped off, his sweat-glistening chest mapped with lean muscle and old track scars.

But the moment he stepped inside, his entire body went rigidly still.

The intoxicating, raw aroma of an Omega heat—mingled intensely with his own personal scent on his own leather jacket—hit him like a physical blow. Rex didn't move.

The arrogant smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a profound, shocked paralysis. His gray eyes turned completely dark, his pupils dilating until the silver in his irises was swallowed by black. His inner wolf didn't roar; it shivered in utter, absolute disbelief, recognizing a biological reality that should have been impossible.

Slowly, his eyes locked onto me, trembling on the floor of his stall, holding his jacket to my chest.

"Impossible," Rex whispered, his voice a rough, strangled sound as he took a step forward, the sheer confusion in his mind making his movements slow, almost hesitant. "What... what the fuck are you?"

Panic seized my limbs. I dropped the jacket to the floor like it had turned to fire, scrambling to my feet and trying to rush past his broad shoulder toward the exit as if nothing had happened. "I—I was just fixing the zipper. Marcus is looking for you. I'll go get him."

I kept my head down, but before I could clear his frame, a massive, calloused hand wrapped around my wrist with a tremendous, unyielding force.

Rex jerked his arm back.

I gasped as I was spinning around, my back slamming hard against the heavy metal locker door. The impact sent a sharp shiver down my spine, knocking the remaining breath from my lungs.

Before I could recover, Rex crowded directly into my space. He didn't just stand there; he forcefully pushed his heavy, muscular thigh right between my knees, forcing my legs apart and anchoring my trembling lower body flat against the metal.

He pinned my wrists flat above my head with a single hand, his face so close his lips almost brushed mine. The raw, predatory focus in his eyes was blinding.

"You're an Omega," Rex growled, the realization finally snapping into place inside his mind, his voice dropping into a dark, unyielding command.

I stared right back into his black eyes, my chest heaving against his bare chest, my voice trembling but my gaze burning with pure, concentrated venom.

"And you're a fucking idiot if you think I'm going to admit it," I spat back.

Rex’s lips pulled into a slow, sharp, and terrifyingly dark smirk.

"Good," Rex whispered, his grip tightening on my wrists as his breath hot against my lips sent a wave of adrenaline straight to my core. "I fucking hate obedient people."
