Chapter 2

Author: Elora Faye
The nurse's scream pierced my eardrums. Warmth spread between my legs, the scent of disinfectant and blood rushing into my nose.

"Helen!" Ryan shouted.

The examination that followed showed minor bleeding. The fetus was unharmed, but I needed to rest.

Kate sneered from the side. "It was just a slap. Stop pretending to be so delicate."

After I was discharged, Ryan carried me to the car. When the door opened, the strong scent of Kate's perfume filled the air.

A diamond necklace sparkled from an open jewelry box on the passenger seat.

"Sit in the front," Ryan said as he opened the door.

Kate slipped in before I could react, adjusting a down-feather cushion behind her back. "Ryan had this made for my pregnancy back pain. Helen, you don't mind, do you?"

"Kate," Ryan warned in a low voice.

She cradled her belly and frowned. "Don't be harsh with me. You're scaring the baby."

Ryan bent down and gently stroked her belly, saying the fetus could sense emotions.

Seeing this, I closed the door silently and got into the back seat as if I were a piece of luggage.

When we returned to Hurst Villa, Ryan brought me back to the master bedroom. The butler, Jason Garth, came in urgently. "Mr. Hurst, the Davises and the Kleimanns are in the living room."

Ryan frowned. "Rest. I'll take care of it," he assured me.

When shouting erupted downstairs, I stepped outside to listen.

Kate's father, Francis Davis, spoke with a sharp voice. "Ryan Hurst, you owe Kate and the child an explanation! The reputation of the Davis family must not be tarnished!"

My adoptive mother, Maria Treer, looked at me coldly. "Helen, you've disgraced the Kleimann family. Not only are you pregnant with an illegitimate child, but now everyone knows it."

"I'll take responsibility," Ryan said wearily.

"And how will you do that?" Kate's mother, Bella Presley, said with disdain. "Acknowledge Kate's child as your heir. As for Helen's, either get rid of it or raise it as an illegitimate child."

"Enough!" Ryan growled, followed by a long silence.

"Fine," he said hoarsely, as if giving in. "I'll acknowledge Kate's child as my heir."

Then, his voice turned cold. "Helen's child will be raised as an adopted son of the Hurst family."

After the judgment was made, I went back to the bedroom, shut the door, and sat motionless on the bed. My belly still ached faintly.

Ryan came in, kneeled before me, and tried to hold me.

"Why?" I asked hoarsely through tears. "Why does my child have to be the one to suffer?"

"Kate is a socialite. The Davis family is rising quickly in our circles. A scandal would destroy her." Ryan avoided my gaze and held my icy hands. "Besides, through Kate's child, I can control the Davis family."

"So that's what this is all about? A deal?" I cried. "You'd turn my child into an illegitimate child. In that case, don't let him be born. Just abort him. He shouldn't even come into this world."

"No." Ryan stared into my eyes and insisted, "Don't you dare hurt our child. I will not let your child or Kate's go. For now, rest. Don't overthink things. I'll hold onto your phone." With that, he left the room.

Outside, two men in black suits stood guard.

Ryan instructed them, "Watch her. Don't let her leave as she pleases."

Just like that, I was placed under house arrest.

Ryan tried to take a step forward, but his legs gave out, and he collapsed face-first into the snow. The bodyguards immediately stepped in to block him.The man who once called my unborn child a "bastard" now lay sprawled in the slum's snow-covered street. How pathetic and ironic."Save your tears, Ryan." I cut him off. "They're only good for watering the weeds of the slums."Ryan froze. He stopped pretending to be the broken romantic and instead venomously glared.Kate screamed, "How can you treat him like this? He never stopped thinking about you! All these years, it's because of you that he—""Kate!" Ryan roared suddenly, like someone had ripped away the last shred of his pride."What goes around, comes around. This is exactly what I wanted—for you to live and suffer while wishing you were dead." I turned, ready to leave with Arthur and our daughter."No! Helen! Don't go!" Kate howled. What followed was the sound of something splashing and Kate's piercing scream.Kate had

Three years later. The wind in Burkeen howled, dragging snowflakes along the pavement. The heavy car door was pulled open with respectful precision.I tightened the sable coat around my body as I stepped out.Arthur's arms were strong and steady as he held our two-year-old daughter, Emily Graham. Our private driver jogged forward, holding up a large black umbrella to shield us from the snowstorm.Up ahead, a hoarse voice hawked, "Handmade soaps! Lavender and rose oil—"I turned toward the sound, only to see Kate standing behind a shabby little stall.I barely recognized her.The once perfectly groomed, honey-blonde hair now looked like dry straw, shoved under a worn knitted hat. Her cheeks were purple from the cold. Her fingers—chapped, red, and raw—fumbled with a few crudely shaped bars of soap.At her feet squatted a thin, shivering little boy, no more than five or six, hugging his knees.I stopped in my tracks.Arthur immediately sensed the change, his sharp gaze landin

When I stepped into Winston Castle, nestled in Sucklepier, I felt something I'd never known before—the warmth of a true home. Not the cold calculations of the Kleimanns. Not the golden prison that was Hurst Villa."My dear, everything here will be yours one day," Grandpa told me.I met his gaze head-on."Give me time. I want to earn the respect I deserve on my own terms."A flicker of approval passed through his eyes."Good," he replied. "The resources of the Winston family are yours to use. However, you have to walk the path on your own."…Three years later, in a high-stakes boardroom, my fingers glided over a billion-dollar contract. At the head of the table, I laid down profit reports from an energy futures hedging. And under the spotlight, I signed a multi-billion-dollar rare metal mining deal. The footsteps of supporters began to converge behind me.These past three years, I had deliberately shut out all news from Nuev City.I wouldn't look back until I held the full

Francis moved with lightning speed, catching the baby mid-air.He immediately backhanded Ryan across the face, knocking him to the ground."You bastard! That's your child!" Francis roared as the newborn wailed in his arms.Ryan lay on the cold marble floor, shoulders trembling. Then, he burst into a fit of maniacal laughter. "My child, you say?" He staggered to his feet, pointing at the baby in Kate's arms. "How does a bastard born from a whore deserve to be my son?"Then, he turned to Francis and Bella, roaring, "Your beloved 'socialite' daughter got knocked up by some other man! Her baby is the bastard!" Glaring at the couple, he continued, "And the one you drove to its death was the true heir of the Hurst bloodline! Helen was pregnant with my son! My heir!"Silence fell over the room. Only the crying of the newborn child broke it.Francis' and Bella's faces turned a deathly white. The Kleimann couple stood frozen, shock and regret flooding their expressions. Each of them

Three months later, Kate gave birth to a son.During her postpartum recovery, Kate was unusually fragile and emotionally unstable. She couldn't bear to be apart from Ryan. Any of his attempts to leave triggered hysterical crying and screaming from her. With the newborn too delicate for long-distance travel, Ryan's plans to return to Nuev City were repeatedly delayed.Ryan was tired of Kate.Emotionally, he had long since flown back to Molhatt. He yearned to be by Helen's side, to make up for all the time lost. Finally, Jason sent him fabricated news that Helen had given birth to their son.The moment Ryan heard it, it felt like life surged back into him.It was a son with both his and Helen's blood.Though he had promised to treat Kate's child as his own, the child carried only lies and obligations.Helen's child was his true heir.He couldn't wait to return to Molhatt."Prepare the plane," Ryan said firmly in a hoarse voice. "Tomorrow, we will return to Hurst Villa."In

A sharp pain suddenly twisted through Ryan's chest. Ryan let out a muffled groan as cold sweat beaded on his forehead, his face going deathly pale."Ryan? Darling, what's wrong? Are you tired?" Kate asked.Ryan waved his hand dismissively, trying to suppress the sudden surge of unease. The plane was about to land. They arrived at the private clinic on the shores of Lake Guinevere, where the top-floor suite overlooked a breathtaking view of the lake and mountains.Kate quickly fell asleep under the midwife's soothing care. After Ryan walked out onto the terrace and lit a cigar, he pulled out a satellite phone and dialed the number he knew by heart. However, no one answered even after his third attempt.Irritated, Ryan yanked off his tie and instead dialed the direct line to Hurst Villa.A few seconds later, Jason's calm voice came through. "Mr. Hurst.""Where's Helen?" Ryan's tone was tense. "Why isn't she answering?""Mrs. Hurst is resting, Mr. Hurst. She might not be in th
