Nyla’s POV

From the summit, the pack that had been my prison, I got one last look at Silver Dawn. The torches flickered in the darkness, but I felt nothing. I have no regrets. No sadness. Just relief.

At last, I was free.

As I moved forward, the moon overhead illuminated the wooded walk with silvery light. Even though my entire body ached from fatigue, I persisted. I wouldn’t stop.

"Nyla."

I went cold.

The voice was deep, steady unfamiliar.

My grip tightened on the dagger hidden in my sleeve. I turned slowly, my senses sharp, ready for an attack.

A man walked out of the shadows.

Tall. Broad shoulders. His dark hair was tied back at his neck. His amber eyes, which glowed a little in the moonlight, regarded me with quiet focus. Although he was dressed simply in a black tunic, his attitude made it clear that he was no typical wolf.

He didn't approach. Didn't threaten me. He did nothing except observe.

"Who are you?" With a chilly tone, I inquired.

The man's head cocked slightly. “My name

Nyla’s POVAhead, the massive, defended gates of the Dark Moon Pack loomed. These walls had a strange strength that didn't feel like a prison, in contrast to Silver Dawn's frigid and inflexible walls. As Caleb guided me through, I balled my fists. Wolves paused to observe, their eyes curious but not disdainful. Don't sneer. No insults in whispers. It wasn't like me at all.A dark-leathered warrior with strong shoulders walked forward and bowed his head. "Caleb Beta." I was shocked when he turned to face me and bowed a little. "Nyla, welcome to Dark Moon."I tensed up. "Do you recognize my name?"He gave a nod. Word spreads quickly. An Alpha destroyed by a warrior? We don't hear anything like that very often.I stiffened. Warrior. Not a traitor. Omega is not weak.I was about to reply when Caleb pushed my arm. "Come on. We are expected by the Alpha.I went through the village after him. Silver Dawn was not like the pack. Wolves joked and trained together. Young Omegas were working with

Nyla’s POVWith brief gasps of air, I wiped the perspiration from my brow. Silver Dawn's training grounds were very different from Dark Moon's. No ruthlessness or scornful warriors were waiting for me to fail. Only perseverance and hard work were required here.Caleb crossed his arms in front of me. "Once more."I let out a groan. "I just got knocked on my ass five times by you."He smiled. "And if you don't concentrate, I'll do it again."I repositioned myself and tightened my hold on the wooden sword. Leo, a fighter, lunged across from me. I swerved swiftly, but he was too quick. He swung low, sweeping my legs from beneath me before I could block.I thudded loudly to the ground."Fuck it," I said.A few warriors laughed, but it was not a malicious laugh—just fun. Leo extended a hand, and I frowned. "You're improving," he said. With a sigh, I grabbed his hand and got myself up. "I must be quicker."Caleb gave a nod. "Exactly. Nyla, you're strong. However, strength is insufficient on

Nyla’s POVMy body ached from the wounds I had sustained, and I was breathing in short gasps, but I was not going to give up. Damon's amused eyes glinted as he stepped in front of me.Rolling his shoulders, he reflected, "You have the will to fight." "I enjoy that."I tightened my hold on my dagger. "Then you will love what comes next."He smiled. "Show me."I sprang forward, aiming for his neck. Before I could respond, he spun behind me and avoided with ease. He wrapped his hand around my wrist and twisted it until my arm hurt.He whispered in my ear, "You're fast, but not fast enough."I slammed my elbow into his ribs with a sudden jerk. With a grumble, he relaxed his hold just enough for me to escape. I whirled around and cut his chest with my blade.Splashes of blood.Damon chuckled after glancing down at the wound. I laughed. He wiped the blood with his fingertips and remarked, "That's cute." "However, we both know that this is only the beginning."I tightened my jaw. I had battl

Nyla’s POVCaleb's voice was still echoing in my mind."Pardon me. They gave me no options.I gritted my teeth and pushed the memory from my mind. I was unable to consider him. I was unable to consider Killian. The mate relationship, however, remained. I had a gut feeling that Killian wasn't finished with me yet.No. I didn't think it was true.Killian had abandoned me. I had been taken by him. He had put his knapsack before me.He had put power before me.I gripped my dagger tighter and said a growl.A rogue rushed at me, his fangs exposed. I dodged his blow by twisting my body, then slashed my blade into his side. He sounded a choked scream and fell to the floor. My hands were bloody. Excellent. Allow it to get discolored. Let it serve as a reminder of my purpose. Then I looked around at the other rogues. "Who will be next?"They paused. Their eyes flashed with fear.I smiled. They ought to be terrified. We were victorious. Dropping his sword, he let out a yell.Killian and I had a burning mate bond, but I pushed that emotion away. He is my adversary.I turned and met his eyes.Unlike the others, Killian did not charge at me. He observed. Awaiting. Making calculations.A fighter sprang forward from behind. I caught his wrist as I spun, pressing my knee into his ribs. He groaned as he fell. Then—a change in the atmosphere.Killian shifted. His fist struck my blade, causing it to fall out of my hand before I could even respond. My heart was racing. He moves quickly. More powerful than previously. He scarcely tripped as I kicked out his legs and dived under his next blow.He ducked another blow and said quietly, "You've improved."I didn't respond. Nyla’s POVWith my heart still racing after my brush with Killian, I staggered into the rogue camp. I couldn't get rid of the fire that shot through me when he touched me, no matter how hard I tried, and his words kept repeating in my head. What caused me to feel this way? He was against me.Caleb's keen eyes narrowed as he strode over after spotting me from the other side of the camp. "What took place? You appear to have seen a ghost.I scuffed out a laugh. "A ghost would’ve been easier to deal with."Caleb studied me with his arms crossed. "I'll venture a guess. Killian?I winced. He always saw right through me.He clenched his jaw. "Nyla, screw it. I take it you went to see him?I turned my head away, not wanting to respond.Caleb exhaled with frustration. "You must not allow him to influence your thoughts. He poses a threat. My voice was no more than a whisper when I looked up. "I know that."He yelled, "Then act like it!" "The Alpha of the pack that massacred our folks is him! Do

My thoughts were momentarily obscured by bewilderment. Then I was hit by reality.Launch an assault.I snatched up my dagger and ran toward the roar of war. Tents were burning, warriors were fighting, and dead were all over the ground in the renegade camp."Go! Protect the camp! My voice broke over the cacophony as I yelled.Blood gushed from the side of a rogue as he stumbled by me. He was already staring blankly when I grabbed his arm. There were Damon's troops everywhere. With their snarls resonating in the darkness, wolves in dark armor ripped through our fortifications like a hurricane.Near the middle of the camp, I discovered Caleb defending himself against three adversaries at once. My legs felt like lead, my arms hurt, and my ankles and wrists pulsed with a searing burn. The icy, merciless metal chains wrapped around me jerked me back down as I groggily raised my head.Silver.My breathing became laboured. My skin was scorched by the metal, which drained my last strength. As I looked around the darkened cell, panic boiled within me. The air was heavy with the smell of rot and blood, and the stone walls were wet. Without a window, it was impossible to determine whether it was day or night.I was confined.Footsteps reverberated through the corridor. Slow. With a purpose. The hefty iron door cracked open, and I swallowed hard.Damon.He entered, amusement shining in his dark eyes. "Are we finally awake?"Ignoring the searing sting in my wrists, I made myself sit up. "Give me up," I snarled. He crossed his arms and laughed. "Oh, Nyla. Nyla’s POVI stood frozen. The area where our child had vanished was blazing again—not soft like moonlight, nor raging like fire, but something else.Odd. strong. Ancient.Underwater, the air cracked and rippled like glass. Then a light exploded from the narrow gap between the sky and the earth. High above the altar ruins, it twisted into a perfect circle and spun like a whirlwind. One side of the circle was blazing with orange flames, while the other side was covered in icy black shadows.Half darkness, half fire, a beautiful ring.It floated in the sky, unmoving but humming with energy.Clinging to his arm, I said, "Killian." "See it?"“I see it,” he murmured. He tightened his jaw. That's him. That's our son.In the center of the circle, a shape appeared, tiny at first, then clearer and brighter. He had returned. However, it's not the same. His feet didn’t touch the ground. He hung between the elements, his arms held wide, golden hair swirling in a wind we couldn’t feel. His eyes we

Nyla’s POVAlthough the fire around us was modest, it was raging inside of me.With his body flickering dimly, my child lay motionless, torn between life and something else. Between this place and the shadowy location Auren had claimed. The liminal space.Killian was standing next to me, his fingers still shaking from the fight, his chest rising and falling. He was injured, although not externally. From within. From me.Because offering Killian's soul was the only way to save our child.I was ill.I moved away from the altar that we had constructed. My knees struck the floor. I cried and gripped my stomach."This is impossible," I said. "I can't let him go." Never again.Killian crouched next to me and dabbed at my tears."Nyla, you're not losing me," he uttered quietly.I gave a headshake. "You're not getting it. You'll fade if I carry out the rite. Nyla’s POVThe dream world was strange, chilly, and unsettling. It seemed like a world where time didn't exist, where shadows murmured, and where life and death coexisted. My heart was racing as I stood by myself, trying to find the one person I never imagined I would have to see again. Then I caught a glimpse of him from the darkness.Auren.His towering form entered the gloomy illumination. His eyes were sad and hollow, and his normally assured gait had wavered. He had a... new appearance. He appeared to have been through a lot.The sight of him made me freeze, my heart hurting. Like a tidal wave, the grief at his passing and everything we had lost swept through me."Auren?" With a cracked voice, I whispered. His expression was a mixture of regret and sadness as he looked at me. "Nyla..." His voice was softer and quieter than I remembered. "I understand your thoughts. However, you must pay attention. I've evolved.I stepped back and shook my head. "Modified? How? Auren, you're dead.

Nyla’s POVMy hands were shaking as I held the tiny light in my palm, as I stood at the edge of the holy altar. Hot and dazzling, the fire swirled with its own life as it danced. My infant daughter was lying in my arms. Her eyes were wide and brimming with a youthful, yet ancient, fire.I had the power to control the flame, a power that had been handed down through the years. It was hers now, though. And for her to have control over it as she matured, I had to attach it to her, make it a part of her. The item was risky, though.I started the ceremony, letting the words escape my mouth like wind-blown whispers."I bind the fire within thee by blood and flame, by heart and soul."As if trying to test my resolve, the fire's heat continued to rise. I pushed my fear aside and closed my eyes. It was necessary to accomplish this. There was a peculiar movement in the air around us as the youngster in my arms cooed sweetly. The flame seemed to be alive and able to sense what was about to happe

Nyla’s POVStone and fire were used to carve the hall.We passed tall crimson pillars. Beneath our boots, the floor burned dimly, carved with blazing runes and ancient symbols. I hugged my daughter. Quiet, she observed everything with eyes too perceptive for her age.Killian walked next to me, anxious and silent.Five individuals stood at the end of the hallway. They all had a separate crest over their hearts and were dressed in red, with their faces largely obscured. They did not bow. They stood still, like statues.A tall woman with silver braids and a voice like parched leaves walked forward. She said, "Queen Mother Nyla." "The Crimson Throne welcomes you."I said, "I'm not a queen." "My daughter is still a baby, too."Another elder said in a low voice, "She is the Flame reborn." "And now her reign begins."I gave a headshake. "She isn't even proficient in walking."The tall woman gave a small smile. She speaks in tongues that are older than our bones, nevertheless. My heart was soothed by her gentle breathing. The past few days had been difficult. sprinting. hiding. doubting everything.Nearby, Killian was honing his blade. Throughout the morning, he had been silent. His eyes were weary. Last night, he hadn't slept. In her irises, a fiery crimson flame whirled like coals. Then..."Shadow and fire will kneel."She didn't have her voice. Not even a youngster owned it. Like thunder, it echoed. Deep. Imposing. Old.I nearly dropped her when I jumped. In an instant, Killian was standing with his sword partially drawn. "What was that?"I tightened my grip on my infant. "She—" she said.
