Chapter 1

Penulis: Tubbs
After staring at the electronic door lock for a couple of seconds, my fiancée, Tamara Jackson, actually broke into a smile.

"Alright. The man of the house has spoken," she declared.

She then lowered her head to rummage through the bottom rack of the shoe cabinet for a pair of my house slippers, which she tossed by my feet.

"Change your shoes first. Aren't your feet hurting from running around hunting for construction materials all day today?" she asked.

She almost sounded too natural.

She remembered a lot of things about me—from my shoe size and the location of my stomach medicine to the fact that I liked my yogurt unsweetened.

However, despite having all my preferences in mind, she had invited another man into our marital home.

Ian had hung his head and was already reaching for his suitcase.

He said, "If Shane's not happy with this, I'll just go back to my hotel. I just wanted to give him a surprise and would rather not make things awkward for everyone."

Tamara reached out to grab the handle of his suitcase and said, "Your luggage is heavy. Don't trouble yourself moving it around."

I looked up and told her, "Let him leave."

Her smile faded a little. "Shane, he just had his engagement called off."

"So?" I asked.

"So, he's feeling really upset right now."

"That's his business."

Tamara's brows instantly furrowed. It was as if she hadn't expected me to be so direct.

This time, my older sister, Melody Shea, was the first to speak.

"When we were children, Ian used to sleep over in your room every time his parents got into a fight. Now that we're all grown up, why are you getting your pants in a twist just because he's staying over for a few days?"

My good friend, Derek Hill, also tugged on my arm and said, "He only came back to be your best man at your wedding anyway. Just think of him moving in a few days ahead of you as a literal housewarming gift."

I looked at Ian and asked, "When did you move in?"

"Five days ago," he replied.

"Who greenlit it?"

He reflexively looked toward Tamara, who decided to own up to it.

"I did," she replied bluntly.

I smiled and asked, "Didn't you tell me that you've been rushing to finish a project for the past two weeks?"

"His situation hasn't cost me any delays."

"What about you helping him pick out a mattress?"

She paused before replying, "I didn't have to go out of my way for that."

"And the curtains?"

Derek replied in a small voice, "I helped him pick them out."

I then looked at Melody.

She confessed, "Those few business trips I mentioned were actually trips to help him move out of his rented place and move in here."

All three of them had lied to me, claiming that they were otherwise occupied.

In the past six months, I'd visited construction supply yards alone, carried tile samples onto crowded subways, and sent different-colored closet door photos into the group chat late at night.

I often went through all that effort only to receive a dismissive reply from Tamara the next day, claiming that anything would do.

Yet, they hadn't actually all been busy.

They'd simply chosen to spend their time with Ian instead.

Ian was still attempting to explain himself.

"I was the one who told them to keep things from you. You're getting married soon, and I didn't want to bother you with my own woes."

Tamara immediately added, "Did you hear that? He was afraid of affecting you."

I looked at her and asked, "So, am I supposed to thank him for that?"

She was momentarily stumped, after which she smiled and tried to snuggle into my embrace.

"Alright, alright. I admit I misspoke, so please don't give me such a sour look, dearest."

I turned my head and stepped away from her.

Instead of getting annoyed, she turned and picked up Ian's two suitcases.

"I'll send him back to a hotel," she announced.

As she walked past me, she said in a low voice, "I'll buy you some candied nuts later tonight. They used to be really effective at calming your temper, and I'm sure that fact remains true."

After they left, I crouched to tidy up the master bedroom.

There was a receipt from a moving company dated five days ago tucked behind the bedside table.

It showed that they'd moved luggage from a hotel to this address.

An attached note read, "Long-term resident moving in with considerable luggage. Please handle items with care."

Tamara's signature could be seen in the signature column.

I flipped the receipt over to the back page and saw that the moving company had circled some words in red ink.

"The master bedroom has been cleared out in advance and is move-in ready."

I stared at that line of text, abruptly recalling how I'd asked them if they could spare a day to help tidy up the wedding home five days ago.

All three of them had claimed that they were busy.

Ian's return had never been some so-called surprise gift.

It was simply a decision they'd made for me that I had no choice but to accept with a smile.

Six months later, I finished renovating the house. The designer asked, "Are we still sticking with the wedding home theme?"I replied, "No."I tested the master bedroom mattress and picked out the curtain colors myself.I didn't have to set any space aside on the shoe rack for women's shoes, and I didn't have to buy a dining table large enough for six people.Since I lived alone, there was no need to deliberately set things up to look like there would be people coming home at any time.Ian later left the city but not before sending me a very long text.It started off with, "Shane, considering how close we were as children, I always thought that you wouldn't mind me borrowing some of your things."I didn't read the rest of the message. In the end, he still didn't fully understand that while items could be borrowed or lent out, the same could not be said for one's place in other people's hearts.Melody would occasionally ask me if I'd be back for dinner.Once, she sent me a me

On the day originally set aside for the wedding, I invited a few colleagues over for a barbecue party.Melody didn't show up, and neither did Derek.I hadn't invited them.I'd already taken the wedding garlands off the walls.I also hung up a picture of the sea I'd taken during vacation on the wall where the wedding portrait was supposed to go.My colleagues raised their glasses in cheer. "Happy housewarming, Shane!"I smiled and clinked glasses with them. "Thank you."Just then, the doorbell rang.I assumed it was our takeout that had arrived, but I opened the door to the sight of Tamara. She was wearing a white mermaid gown.I'd helped her pick it out half a year ago after she'd tried on various dresses. She'd complained that it was too tight around the waist, upon which I jokingly told her, "Is getting married to me that miserable an affair to you?"She tilted her head back to kiss me and replied, "I'd willingly let the dress crush my bones if it meant I got to marry you

Two days after my visit to Melody's house, Derek came looking for me.He stood in the doorway with two bottles of wine in hand."Ten minutes. Just give me ten minutes of your time. I'll leave after I've said my piece," he said.I let him inside. He handed me the bottles, saying, "These used to be your favorite."I took a sip, but the flavor was too rich for me."I no longer drink this," I told him.He stiffened. "When did your tastes change?""After I graduated from university," I replied. His smile gradually faded away. For the past few years, he'd kept in mind which songs Ian couldn't bear listening to after his breakup and the fact that Ian needed to drink some warm milk before bed. He also knew that Ian's favorite curtain color was light blue.Yet, he didn't know that I hadn't enjoyed cider for a long time.He lowered his head and toyed with his glass. "I've been doing some thinking recently. Where did I get the nerve to suggest that Ian should stay in your marital home

Melody fixed up the wall. She dug up all my childhood photos and redrew every height marker covered by white paint by referring to their positions in the photos. She sent me a photo over the weekend alongside a message that read, "I didn't dare try to replicate Dad's handwriting."I gazed at the photo for a long time before replying with a simple okay. That night, she sent me another message. "I found the enamel bowl that Dad used to use."I eventually decided to go back for a visit. My room looked much like how it used to be, and Ian's belongings had been cleared out.The bedsheets had been swapped back, and my photo album was back on the desk.A series of newly drawn pencil marks were lined up neatly on the wall, but somehow, it looked even more artificial than before.Melody, who was standing behind me, asked tentatively, "Does it still look like it used to?"I didn't reply. She was the first to hang her head and say, "I know it doesn't."There was a pot of chicken noodl

After moving into Tamara's and my wedding home, Ian complained that the master bedroom's mattress was too firm, so he'd had Tamara pick out the current one with him. She'd paid for it.I returned the mattress to the store and instructed them to refund the money through the original payment method, so Tamara quickly caught wind of it.Sure enough, she showed up while I was out shopping for a new mattress.Just as I was testing out a second mattress, her voice rang out from behind me. "Don't recommend a mattress that's too soft for him."The salesperson turned around.Tamara walked over and pressed down on the mattress with her palm."He has a bad back, so if it's too soft, he won't be able to get up the next day," she explained. The salesperson smiled and said, "You understand him quite well, ma'am."She smiled instinctively and replied, "We've been together for eight years."She froze up as soon as the words left her mouth.I stood up and said, "I'll take this one."Tamara

Tamara waited outside my house for an entire night. She was still knocking on the door at 2:00 am.Once in a while, she would call out something through the door."Open up for a bit. I won't go in. I just want to say a few things."You have a weak stomach, so don't go to bed on an empty stomach."I placed the candied nuts by the door. Remember not to eat them once they've gone past the expiration date."She finally stopped pounding on the door by 4:00 am, but she sent me a message instead."Alright. Throw your tantrum. Call off the wedding if you like. We'll just host it again once you've calmed down."I stared at her message for a long time.Even now, she was under the impression that I was just throwing a fit.The next morning, I canceled the reservations for our wedding ceremony, honeymoon hotel stay, and photography session.Tamara rushed to find me at the entrance of my company building at noon. Her eyes were bloodshot, but the first thing she asked me was, "Have you e
