Theron's reply didn't come until dawn.

"Dissolving the bond requires you to reclaim the Elven artifact you entrusted to him."

"The Silver Leaf Vine bracelet must be severed by your own hand."

"Once the severance begins, your body will endure immense pain."

"Are you certain about this?"

I replied with a single word without hesitation: "Yes."

The bracelet had always been locked in the safe in Jason's study.

He'd said it was the symbol of our love, that it needed to be kept secure, never to be touched by anyone.

Now I saw it for what it was: a shackle he'd used to keep me trapped.

The next afternoon, sunlight glared through the windows.

Jason finally came home.

He reeked of alcohol.

And the rose perfume Vivian always wore.

The two scents mingled into something nauseating.

He tossed a black velvet box onto the bed.

"Alright, I'm not holding last night against you.

"Vivian picked this out as a peace offering for you. She's tough on the outside but soft on the inside.

"Mom's birthday party is tonight. Put this on and come with me."

I didn't look at the box. I met his gaze calmly.

"Where's my bracelet?"

Jason faltered, his hand freezing mid-motion on his tie.

"What bracelet?"

"The Silver Leaf one I gave you.

"Since we're going to a birthday party, I'd like to wear it."

Something unnatural flashed through Jason's eyes, quickly smothered by irritation.

"That bracelet's too plain. It doesn't suit a formal occasion like tonight.

"Vivian picked out this necklace for you. It's a much better match."

He pulled off his tie, tossed it on the couch, and came over to put his arm around my shoulders.

"Be good. Don't be ungrateful. Vivian stayed up drinking with the guys all night just to smooth things over between us.

"She doesn't hold your awful behavior from yesterday against you, and she even went out of her way to pick a gift for you. What more could you possibly want?"

I stepped aside to avoid his touch and reached over to open the box on the bed.

Inside was no necklace.

It was a crude black leather collar.

Dangling from its center was a metal tag engraved with the word "Pet."

It was a dog collar.

I lifted my eyes to Jason. My gaze was ice.

"She picked this out specially, did she?"

Jason rubbed his nose, a flicker of guilt crossing his face, but he doubled down anyway.

"Vivian says the punk style is all the rage right now."

Two years ago, he'd traced his fingers along the nape of my neck after we'd been intimate.

He'd said my skin was so delicate that even pure silver left red marks.

He'd promised me only the finest jewelry, the only kind worthy of me.

Now he thought I deserved a rough leather dog collar.

All to humor Vivian's little game.

I closed the box and dropped it, packaging and all, into the trash can.

"I don't need this garbage."

Jason's temper flared.

"Aria! How long are you going to keep this up?"

Just then, his phone rang.

The screen flashed Vivian's name with a red heart beside it.

He answered immediately, his voice melting into tenderness.

"What's wrong? Is your stomach acting up again?

"Stay put. Did you take your medicine? I'll be right there to take you to the doctor."

He hung up and headed for the door without a backward glance.

At the doorway, he paused.

"Ari, be good. Vivian's all alone right now. I can't just let something happen to her.

"Stay home and do your makeup. I'll take her to the doctor and come right back to pick you up for the hotel.

"And stop being petty about the bracelet. Next month is our anniversary. I'll take you to Paris and get you a custom Cartier set. How about that?"

That was always his way.

Dangling empty promises to cover up his favoritism.

"And just so you don't go out and cause another scene, I'm taking the spare key.

"Stay put and wait for me. And don't give my mother attitude."

Click.

The door locked from the outside.

I stood in the empty apartment, looking at the dog collar in the trash, feeling nothing at all.

I walked to the study.

He'd never told me the combination to the safe.

I tried Jason's birthday. Wrong.

I tried Vivian's birthday.

Beep. The safe swung open.

Inside were stacks of business documents and a few jewelry boxes.

The Silver Leaf bracelet was the one thing missing.

I searched every corner, even the hidden compartment.

The bracelet was gone.

Without it, forcing the bond's dissolution would kill me from the backlash.

My phone screen lit up.

A photo from Vivian.

In the picture, my Silver Leaf bracelet was clasped around her ankle.

She lost her mind and was committed to a psychiatric hospital.Vivian was convicted of fraud and grand larceny against the Calloway family and sent to a women's prison, both legs still broken. Then there was Jason. In his final three days, his organs failed in rapid succession. Every breath felt like swallowing crushed glass. His skin began to ulcerate. His blood thickened and seized in his veins like rust.On the third day, he was nothing but skin stretched over bone. His eyes had sunk deep into their sockets. He had gone blind.Yet his withered right hand clutched something. No matter how hard they tried, the nurses couldn't pry his fingers open.I stood on the roof of the building across th

Thud! Thud! Thud!Patricia slammed her forehead into the marble floor, drawing blood after only a few blows."Aria! This is all Jay's fault! It's my fault for not raising him right!"I'm begging you, for the sake of everything you two had over the past three years, have mercy and save his life!"If you save him, everything the Calloways own is yours! I'm on my knees!"Tears and snot streamed down her face, every trace of the society matron gone. The guests exchanged uneasy glances. The atmosphere pressed down like a physical weight.I looked down at this mother and son.Back when I'd lived in the Calloway household, curled up in my room drenched in cold sweat from the bond's backlash, what had Patricia said? She'd called me dramatic and accused me of faking. Then she'd forced me out of bed and into the kitchen to make Jason chicken soup."Everything we had?"I let out a cold laugh and took an ancient parchment scroll from Kael."Mrs. Calloway, this is what everything we had for three y

He dug a USB drive from his suit pocket and hurled it at the LED screen control panel behind him."Play it!"A bodyguard stepped forward and plugged it in.The screen lit up, projecting its contents for the entire room.Bank statements and surveillance footage.Vivian had used Jason's fingerprint while he was passed out drunk to unlock his phone and transfer massive sums. She'd spent the money keeping a male model and buying herself a villa.Audio recordings followed."Jason, that moron, really thinks I enjoy hanging out with his idiot friends?"He's nothing but a meal ticket."Aria, that dull little mouse, is the easiest mark alive. All I have to do is fake a few tears and Jason goes after her like a rabid dog."Once that dead man walking finally kicks it, who else is the Calloway money going to?"Every word rang through the banquet hall with crystal clarity. The color drained from Vivian's face completely. She collapsed on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, too stunned to form a sing

"Aria... Ari..."Jason's voice was raw and broken. He shoved aside the bodyguard trying to help him. His legs buckled, and he crumpled from the wheelchair to the marble floor. The surrounding guests backed away, clearing a wide space around him.Jason paid no attention to the stares. He dragged himself across the marble on hands and knees, hauling his wasted body forward.Every movement brought ragged gasps and stifled coughing. He finally reached the bottom of the staircase. He stretched out a skeletal hand, reaching for the hem of my gown."Ari... I finally found you..."Do you have any idea what this past month has been like for me?"He lifted his face, smeared with tears and blood, his voice reduced to nothing but panic and pleading."I was wrong... I know I was wrong!"I shouldn't have treated you that way. I shouldn't have taken everything you gave me for granted..."Please, forgive me. Come home with me?"I stood two steps above him, looking down with cold detachment. No retreat

In the Elven realm, beneath the Tree of Life.I lay in a spring that glowed with emerald light.Pain was remaking my broken body. Forcing the life-sharing bond apart hadn't just drained half my Elven power; it had shattered my once-pristine magical pathways.Theron stood at the water's edge, staff in hand, his expression grave."Aria, you nearly destroyed the future of the Elven people for the sake of one selfish human."The bond is broken. You've survived, but you will never wield healing magic again."I lay with my eyes closed, feeling new power stir inside me like something breaking free of its chrysalis.I had lost my healing abilities. In their place, I'd gained the most devastating form of Elven destruction magic."I understand, High Elder."I opened my eyes. My once-dark pupils had turned a deep gold."Humans don't deserve Elven mercy. They deserve judgment."Theron nodded with approval."Good. Severing all ties with the mortal world is the trial every Elven High Priestess must

The light above the emergency room stayed red all night. The hospital's top blood specialists were called back in the middle of the night, rotating in and out of the room.Patricia sat in the corridor, trembling from head to toe.Her pearl necklace had scattered across the floor, forgotten.Vivian sat in a corner with her ankle wrapped in gauze, her eyes darting restlessly. She couldn't understand how Jason, who had been brimming with arrogant confidence just hours ago, was now bleeding from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, unconscious on the floor. The emergency room door swung open with a bang. The head of hematology stepped out, holding a stack of critical-condition forms.Patricia stumbled toward him, clutching his sleeve."Doctor! How is my son? He's always been perfectly healthy. He barely even catches a cold!"He flipped through the test results, his frown deepening with every page."Mrs. Calloway, your son has a rare blood-wasting syndrome. Did you really not know? It's medical
