Chapter 2

Author: Mimi Winterrest
The moment I opened the front door to my parents' house, my mother, Victoria Bentley, looked up from the sweater she was knitting. My father, Randy Bentley, sat beside her with his headphones on, listening to an old-time radio drama.

At the sound of the door, Mom looked up. The instant she saw my face, the ball of yarn slipped from her hands and fell to the floor.

"Renee? What are you doing? What's wrong? Why do you look so pale?"

Dad yanked off his headphones and hurried over.

The moment I saw the concern and love written all over their faces, the last of the strength that had kept me going finally gave out.

"Dad... Mom..."

My knees buckled, and I sank onto the rug by the front door. Then, like a child who had been hurt beyond repair, I burst into tears. Between broken sobs, I told them everything I had seen at the hospital and showed them the two sickening text messages.

Dad shook with fury. He slammed his palm against the coffee table so hard the cups rattled.

"That scoundrel! That ungrateful lowlife! I'm going to his office right now, and when I'm done with him, he'll wish he'd never been born! And your so-called best friend? We've always treated her like family. How could she do something this despicable?"

Mom wrapped her arms tightly around me, crying as she rubbed my back.

"You've never been treated this way... Divorce him. You have to divorce him. Our family doesn't need a damn thing from his."

I grabbed the hem of Dad's shirt, wiped my tears away with the back of my hand, and shook my head.

"I'm going to divorce him. But I'm not letting him walk away from this without consequences, and I'm not ending my marriage without knowing the whole truth."

When they saw the resolve in my swollen, bloodshot eyes, my parents fell silent. They knew me too well. I had never been someone who could look the other way after being betrayed.

Dad's eyes reddened as he crouched in front of me and stroked my hair.

"All right, Renee. We won't do anything reckless. But remember this: no matter what you decide or how far you want to take it, if the whole world comes crashing down, your mother and I will hold it up for you."

I spent the next three days at my parents' house in a daze.

Then the private investigator I had paid a small fortune delivered a thick manila envelope.

I drew a deep breath, trying to prepare myself for whatever was inside.

I wasn't the only person caught up in this anymore. There was also the ex with whom Maren had supposedly gotten back together.

But when I opened the envelope, the truth hit me like a sledgehammer.

Isaiah was her ex.

I had always known there was a man who had broken Maren's heart, but I had never met him.

She had told me the memories were too painful, so she had deleted everything connected to him and refused to even say his name.

However, on an old private social media account, she had kept more than five years' worth of photos and posts from over a decade ago, preserving every trace of their sweet, innocent young love.

They were childhood sweethearts. From eighteen to twenty-two, they had loved each other with a passion neither of them had ever forgotten.

They had shared an entire history, yet when I first introduced them, they had pretended to be complete strangers.

According to the investigator's report, Isaiah's parents had looked down on Maren's family for being poor and considered her beneath their social standing. They had refused to accept the relationship under any circumstances.

In the photographs, Isaiah's eyes burned with an intensity I had never seen before. He had once stood outside in a torrential downpour for Maren. He had even begged his parents to let them be together.

As independent and resilient as ever, Maren had fought beside him every step of the way.

Unfortunately, his family had done everything they could to humiliate and crush her. They had driven her mother to the brink of taking her own life.

In the end, the two of them were forced apart. She had left town, and he had fallen gravely ill.

The divorce proceedings were over almost before they began.Isaiah walked away with nothing, and his company was forced into bankruptcy. The day I received my final divorce decree, the weather was beautiful. As I walked out of the courthouse, Isaiah was standing at the bottom of the steps, looking like a homeless drifter. I didn't spare him a single glance.Just as I reached for my car door, my phone buzzed. It was a text message from an unknown number."Renee, I'm leaving. I'm going to a city where neither Isaiah nor you will ever be. The moment we finalized your divorce, Isaiah was so happy. He said we could finally be together openly."But when I looked at him, all I could see was the look in your eyes that day at the airport."I realized I couldn't do it. I can't bring myself to enjoy a love that was built on your pain."Every time he holds me, I feel sick. I feel like I'm committing a crime. My guilt destroyed my baby, and it destroyed our relationship too."Renee, I'm so

That night, I returned to the luxury condo I owned downtown. I had just finished showering when the doorbell rang.I glanced at the security monitor and saw Isaiah's haggard face.Throwing on a robe, I opened the door and leaned against the frame, looking at him coldly."Renee, what you did at the airport today was too much." Isaiah took a deep breath. His voice was eerily calm, yet laced with accusation. "Maren truly thought of you as her best friend. Why couldn't you leave her a way out?"I raised an eyebrow. "I'm the one who went too far? Isaiah, you came here in the middle of the night just to stand up for the love of your life?""I know you hate me." He let out a bitter laugh, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. "I've already signed the divorce agreement. My parents threw me out of the family, and my company is on the verge of bankruptcy. I paid the price for the choice I made back then. I've lost everything. Maren is all I have left."He stared at me intently. "But she's sick.

A month later, I returned home, full of sunshine and carrying two pieces of luggage. My original plan had been to slip quietly back into the country, finalize the divorce, and then fly straight to Brickton to start my new job.But somehow my flight information had been leaked. The moment I pushed my luggage cart out of the international arrivals gate, I spotted the two of them standing at the very front of the crowd. It had only been a month, yet I barely recognized either of them.Isaiah had lost a shocking amount of weight. His face was covered in dark stubble, and every inch of him radiated exhaustion and despair.Maren looked even worse. She was painfully thin beneath an oversized trench coat, her complexion waxy and pale. Her vacant eyes made her look like a ghost, as though a stiff breeze could knock her over. The instant he saw me, Isaiah's eyes lit up. Just as quickly, the light faded.Maren, meanwhile, broke through the crowd of people waiting to greet arriving passeng

This was the man I had once loved with all my heart, and the best friend I had once treasured more than anyone.Neither of them was evil. They were simply too weak, too selfish, and too deeply in love.Maybe Maren truly felt guilty for betraying me, and Isaiah truly loved Maren with everything he had.The two of them struggled together in the swamp between morality and desire, hurting each other every step of the way. Yet in the end, they dragged me into it and made me the sacrifice for their tragic love story."Renee, did you watch the video? Maren lost the baby. Isaiah's at the hospital with her now."Mom sent me a voice message. Her voice was weary, but beneath the exhaustion was nothing but heartache for me."Things are a little complicated now. What are you going to do?"I took a sip of my coffee. The bitter liquid slid down my throat, clearing my mind even further.I held down the voice message button and replied in an even, icy tone, "Mom, I'm going to make him sign it.

No one expected Maren, who had been cowering in the corner, trembling the entire time, to suddenly lose control. Like a woman possessed, she shoved through the guests standing in her way and grabbed Isaiah's wrist just as he held the pen."Maren, what are you doing?" Isaiah froze. She broke down in uncontrollable sobs, tears ruining her carefully applied makeup. Clinging desperately to his arm, she shook her head over and over."You can't sign it! Isaiah, you can't divorce Renee! This is all my fault! I'm the one in the wrong! I let myself get carried away... I held on to the little bit of warmth you gave me. I never should have destroyed your marriage!"Then she turned and begged my parents desperately."Please… Please don't let Renee divorce him! I'll leave! I'll disappear! I'll terminate the pregnancy tomorrow. I'll completely disappear from your lives! Please forgive Isaiah. He just made a mistake. The person he truly loves is Renee!""Maren, have you lost your mind?"Seeing

At that very moment, an airport announcement rang out behind me."Ladies and gentlemen, boarding for the flight to Mistlond will begin shortly..."I stood, picked up my suitcase, and handed my boarding pass to the gate agent.Meanwhile, twenty miles away, the spectacle inside the hotel ballroom was only getting started. What happened next was captured in the full video Mom sent me afterward. One by one, the images on the giant screen continued to change. From a photograph of nineteen-year-old Isaiah and Maren embracing each other, smiling brightly at the camera…To security camera stills from a year earlier, showing the two of them wrapped up in each other in a hotel corridor after Isaiah got drunk...To a photo taken just a month earlier of Isaiah supporting Maren as she walked out of the obstetrics clinic. Each image landed like a resounding slap across both their faces.Beside every photo was a short caption. Together, they pieced together the story of two childhood sweethe
