The torches flickered in the narrow corridor leading to the lower chamber, the air damp and heavy with tension. Inside, Marah sat silently, staring ahead, her wrists clenched tightly on her lap. Ralph had just stepped forward.

Edwin remained still, his gaze fixed on her, jaw locked in quiet resolve.

Then, knock knock.

The sharp double knock echoed through the corridor, followed by the heavy thuds of approaching boots. Edwin's eyes narrowed.

This time there came another knock, louder and impati

The hall had nearly devolved into chaos, but Edwin's voice was quick to cut through it like a sword through fog."Enough!"The single word echoed across the chamber. The murmurs died instantly, replaced by a suffocating silence."This," he said, gesturing to the ledger spread before him, "is not a market debate. This is the law of our pack. And as the alpha of this pack, I will see this through, now."Ralph took a deliberate step forward, signaling the guards. The massive oak doors to the council chamber swung shut with a deep thud. The sound echoed like a warning."No one leaves," Ralph declared. "At least, not until the truth we have come here to seek has been spoken."A ripple of tension spread across the hall. The council members shifted in their seats, wives clutched their shawls, and warriors exchanged uneasy glances because they knew Ralp

Vanessa rose smoothly and stepped forward the daughter, who pleaded for calm. "Yes. We must think of survival. I urge the council to consider a temporary handover of authority to ensure supplies are secured. Let us stabilize our food and water first, and then consider whatever accusations must follow."Her tone mimicked concern; the surrounding elders leaned in. Her two elders, Tanor and Merek, now loudly questioned the wisdom of absolute trust in Edwin. The effect was immediate: an internal debate erupted in the hall.Half the crowd pressed toward the door to see the wells, to check, to demand action. The moment had been manufactured to split attention and to make the ledger's revelations feel like part of a damaged world not a call to justice.Edwin's face tightened. He saw the trap for what it was: a perversion of justice into panic. He rose, stepping forward."People," he said, voicing a th

The great hall was packed. Banners fluttered above long benches; the iron chandeliers threw down a procession of hovering light.Word had spread like flame: the Alpha had called a council. People pressed at the doors: elders, warriors, wives, merchants, even a smattering of children who clung to legs for shelter from the cold reality.Edwin sat at the raised dais, cloak folded from the duel and arm still stiff from the cleaner cut Garrett had left. Ralph stood beside him, an immovable shadow.Tiara was visible to the side, not hidden this time. Her face pale but set. Draven's small pouch lay sealed on the table next to a ledger Ralph had placed there earlier, wrapped in cloth and bound with string.A bell tolled. The murmurs dropped to a thousand wary breaths.Elder Mena rapped the bench with knuckles, calling the session to order. "Alpha Edwin speaks,"

Vanessa's tent smelled of oil lamps and old perfume. It was a softer war-room than Garrett's. The two elders who had answered her letter sat across from her, faces careful and hungry: Elder Tanor, with his smooth, oily voice, and Elder Merek, pragmatic and currently unsure which way the wind blew.Vanessa poured them wine and let them sip the bait. Her expression was the picture of sympathy that melted into opportunity."You are both truly smart and calculative. I see that you fully understood my offer," she said, speaking with a sweet voice, hands steepled."Yes, my lady," Elder Tanor spoke. "We did get your letter, but I think it would be quite wrong to say that we fully understood you. And it is why we have come, so that you can enlighten is further."" Psssst, liars," she said to herself, looking at both men with disdain."The offer in my letter reflects only peac

The war chamber smelled faintly of smoke and steadying wine. Different maps lay splayed across the table, wax seals and ledger slips clustered like accusations.Edwin, Ralph, Tiara and Draven moved with a single, cold purpose.Edwin tapped the ledger pouch Draven had given him. "If Garrett thinks he can keep fighting forever, he is nothing but a fool," he said. "But if he is cornered and thinks he can buy his way out again, we would then be ready for him,""He will try to run the moment he realizes that things are not the way he expected them to be," Ralph added."He would only make our future efforts by doing so. His warriors will see him for who he truly is, and with their help, we will force him to stay."Ralph cut in, blunt and efficient. "We should not ambush him in the field,""Why not on the field, Ralph? Is that not the best place

In Edwin's tent, they shut the war room door and drew the bolt.Outside, the remnants of the battle still smoked, but inside the small chamber the air was colder and sharpened by purpose.Ralph set a rough wooden box on the table and opened it with a flat hand. Inside sat a length of dark leather and a single short blade wrapped in oilcloth. He did not look up when he spoke."We cannot keep meeting Garrett half-measures," he said. "He will continue to bleed us until there is nothing left to bleed. If words will not end him, if the sword will not, then maybe it is about time we stop pretending we can't use what he uses against us.""What are you suggesting we do?" Tiara asked, unable to hide her curiosity.Edwin's hand tightened on the rim of the table. "You mean...?"Ralph met his gaze, hard as flint. "We should slip him out of the world he is tearing a

The arena was dead silent.A training accident, they called it. It had happened that a rare spearhead had dislodged from the ceiling where it was hanged and it sank right into the little boy. No one expected it. No one could have stopped it.Except for one girl. The same girl they had mocked, ridi

The doors to the arena shut close with a heavy thud, and the lock slid into place. Only Edwin and Ralph remained inside. The fire burned with low intensity in the corner, casting jagged shadows across the walls. Neither of them said a word for a very long moment. Then Edwin finally broke the silenc
