Mrs. Fredrick POV

The charity ward of Sacramento General Hospital smelled like disinfectant and despair. I lay in my narrow bed, listening to the moans and cries of other patients who couldn't afford private rooms. The woman in the bed next to me had been coughing up blood for three days, and the man across the hall kept calling for his daughter who never came.

This was where people came to die when they couldn't pay for decent medical care.

It had been a week since I told Bernard about my cancer diagnosis. A week since he promised me he would take care of everything and figure out how to pay for my treatments. A week of waiting for him to call back with good news about insurance coverage or payment plans or some miracle solution.

Instead, I got nothing. No phone calls, no visits, no updates about what he was doing to help me. The nurses kept asking about my family, about who they should contact for medical decisions, and I had to keep making excuses for why my only son wasn't here.

Elena POVI let Bernard wait for three days before giving him my answer. Three days of watching him jump every time his phone rang, hoping it was news about his mother's treatment. Three days of seeing him pace around my penthouse like a caged animal, too anxious to eat properly or sleep through the night. It was delicious. On Thursday evening, I found him sitting on my living room couch, staring out the window at the city lights below. He looked like he had aged five years in the past week."Bernard," I said, settling into the chair across from him with a glass of wine. "We need to talk about your mother's situation."His head snapped toward me so fast I thought he might hurt his neck. "Have you made a decision?""I have," I said calmly, taking a sip of my wine. "And I'm afraid the answer is no."The color drained from Bernard's face. "No? Elena, please, you don't understand. She's dying. Without those treatments, she'll be dead in six months.""That's very unfortunate," I said, "bu

Bernard POV My phone rang at 6:30 in the morning while I was sitting in Elena's kitchen, eating the breakfast her chef had prepared. Elena was already dressed for work in a sharp business suit, reading emails on her tablet while sipping her coffee. When I saw my mother's name on the caller ID, my stomach dropped. Mom never called this early unless something was seriously wrong. "Hello?" I answered, trying to keep my voice calm. "Bernard, I need you to come to the hospital right away," my mother said, and I could hear fear in her voice that I had never heard before. "What happened? Are you hurt?" "Just come to Sacramento General Hospital, room 314. Come as fast as you can." The line went dead before I could ask any more questions. "I have to go," I said to Elena, standing up from the breakfast table. "My mother is in the hospital." Elena looked up from her tablet with mild interest. "Is it serious?" "I don't know. She sounded scared, which isn't like her." "Well, don't be go

Vanya POVI walked through the offices of Fredrick Construction, checking on the progress of our latest projects. The company was doing better than it had in years since I had taken over as majority owner. We had new clients, better management systems, and stricter quality standards that were earning us respect throughout Sacramento. But there was one employee who was becoming a serious problem.Bernard sat at his desk in the corner office that used to be his father's, looking like he hadn't slept in weeks. His shirt was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and there were dark circles under his eyes that made him look ten years older than he was."Good morning, Bernard," I said, stopping at his desk. "How's the Morrison project coming along?"He looked up at me with bloodshot eyes and mumbled something that might have been a greeting. The file on his desk was barely touched, and I could see that he hadn't made any progress on the architectural plans that were due yesterday."The deadline was

Elena POVI hung up the phone after my assistant confirmed that all the legal paperwork had been filed correctly. Bernard was now officially trapped in our business partnership, and more importantly, trapped in my penthouse. The call had been about finalizing the contract details, not some emergency like Bernard probably thought."Sorry about that interruption," I said to Bernard, who was standing awkwardly in my bedroom doorway. "Where were we?""Elena, about those house rules," Bernard started, his voice uncertain. "I think we should talk about making some adjustments. I'm not comfortable with asking permission for every little thing."I sat down on my silk-covered bed and patted the space next to me. "Come here, darling. Let's discuss this properly."Bernard walked over slowly, like a man approaching his own execution. When he sat down, I could see the tension in his shoulders and the worry in his eyes."What specifically is bothering you?" I asked sweetly."The credit card thing,

Tracy POVI stared at the empty closet where Bernard's clothes used to hang, feeling like someone had ripped my heart out of my chest and stomped on it. His side of the bedroom looked so bare now, with just empty hangers and dust marks where his belongings had been.He was really gone. My husband had actually left me to live with that rich woman Elena. For the past three hours, I had been walking around our tiny apartment like a zombie, touching things that Bernard had left behind and trying to understand how my life had fallen apart so completely. This morning I was Mrs. Bernard Fredrick, and tonight I was just Tracy Martinez again, alone in a place I couldn't afford without his income. The worst part was that I finally understood exactly how Vanya had felt when she discovered our affair. The crushing betrayal, the feeling of being thrown away like garbage, the humiliation of being replaced by someone else. I had laughed at Vanya's pain back then, but now I was drowning in the same a
