Chapter 3 A Heart

Author: Joe Blue
Time kept ticking. Joseph and Irene refused to admit defeat just like that. So, she grabbed her phone and went to the balcony. She called the relatives and bankers who called themselves her closest allies just to get a loan for this crisis.

In the past, they would immediately answer her call. But now, they would either refuse to take her call, or their phones were straight-up dead.

When her call did go through, they would make up a flimsy excuse and hang up right after they heard it was the Sawyers.

Joseph was in a corner in the living room, calling overseas venture capital firms. Alas, the answers he got only killed his hope bit by painful bit. All his financial avenues were blocked, so much so that not even the money from their mortgaged items could come through.

The business world was a cruel, merciless place. Everyone wouldn't hesitate to kick a dog while it was already down.

Zack opened his eyes and hummed an unknown tune. He looked like a predator perched on top of a roof, watching its prey squirm right before it swooped in for the kill.

He started sizing me up as well, like I was some sort of cattle. Irene put her phone down, her face white.

Eventually, she couldn't hold it back anymore as she crouched down and started quietly sobbing into her hands. Joseph walked up to the floor-to-ceiling window, forlornly looking at the night view.

Philip was leaning on the back of his chair, his eyes closed. He seemed to have aged ten years since the conversation with Zack began.

I remained in my corner, watching these elites fall from grace.

I thought they would point fingers at one another or get into a brawl for the last scraps.

After all, family meant nothing to these aristocrats, at least that was what I thought. So, what happened next surprised me. Joseph took a deep breath and turned around. He went to the coffee table and took off his watch.

Then, he took out his car keys and wallets and piled them up. Irene stopped crying and shakily rose to her feet. She then took off her sapphire earrings and put them together with Joseph's stuff.

Zack snickered. "What's wrong? Are you two going to sell everything you have on your person to scrape up some money, Ms. Sawyer and Mr. Sawyer?"

He kicked the coffee table with the tip of his shoe and mocked, "These only come up to millions at most. Do you really think that's enough to cover up a billion-dollar hole?"

Jonathan was confused. "Irene, Joseph, what are you guys doing?"

Joseph didn't look at him. Instead, he turned to me. "We aren't planning to fill the hole with this. Felicia, this might be it for our family."

I stared at them, utterly stunned.

Irene sidled up to him. She looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and spoke with what was left of her pride. "You love money, don't you? You want one last payout before the breakup? Pawn these things off, then. You can get enough money out of them to last you for a while."

She inhaled deeply.

When she spoke again, there was resignation in her voice. "You can consider it as us pitching in for Jonathan to compensate you. Take it and leave. You'll only be leered at if you stay."

I didn't move. I looked at the pile of shiny items, my heart surging with a well of emotions. These people only saw me as Jonathan's plaything, but they didn't use me as a shield when the going got rough for them.

Instead, they gave me the last of their assets as compensation and told me to leave.

Zack found this scene before him utterly absurd. The mocking smirk playing on his lips deepened as he drawled, "Ah, rich people with a heart of gold. No wonder gold diggers are drawn to you lot."

He slowly approached me and declared arrogantly, "Felicia, what future will you have, staying with a loser like Jonathan, especially when he'll be saddled with debts? Why don't you become my woman?

"The Sawyers are doomed. You can be my plaything and bear me a child. Ah, but here's a disclaimer. I'm not as foolish as Jonathan. You won't be getting that much money from me. However, I will feed you. Just enough so you wouldn't starve to death, though."

I looked at the Sawyer siblings and tossed the thick share transfer agreement onto the coffee table. "That's enough. I don't need an apology." Then, I took the main seat.Joseph quickly asked the butler to brew me some expensive coffee before serving it to me with respect. I took a sip and spoke. "Now that you have the money, pay the workers of the projects that are on hiatus. The holidays are coming. Let's not have the workers pinch pennies during the festivities. "Pay the suppliers while you're at it, and make a statement to calm the market as quickly as possible."Joseph nodded. "I'll talk to finance about their payments right away. Don't worry. The company will be back on track by tomorrow."I put the cup down and pointed at the share transfer agreement. "As per this agreement, I have 60% of the company's shares."The Sawyers didn't object. They had no objections following my orders after watching how I effortlessly turned the tables on Zack and took control of the situat

"Don't just lie there. The floor's cold, Mr. Hempson." I kicked Zack's shoulder with the tip of my heel and mocked, "What was your offer to me earlier? Enough food so that I won't starve to death? My, how generous of you."I crouched down and stared at his face that was contorted by pain and fear. "Still, it seems to me that the one who desperately needs three meals a day is actually you. I had Mike compile all the evidence of you working with the foreign investors to set the Sawyers up. "I can't help but wonder… Do you think others will still remember you for the ruthless businessman you used to be or as an Internet meme? Then again, you'll be in prison for life, so it doesn't really matter. I guess you won't starve in there, given the system."His eyes went wide with horror. He extended his hand with all his strength and tried to grab the hem of my dress. "I'm sorry! I was stupid! I was blind! Please, spare me! A partnership! We can work together! I'll give you half of my share

"Let me go! I'll sue you for assault!" Zack thrashed and squirmed, but his struggle only made him look like a worm in its death throes. His gold-rimmed glasses had been sent flying in the midst of his struggle, smashing against the ground. His immaculate hair was now unkempt."How dare you mess with me, Felicia! Trust me. One call from me is all it takes for the banks to lock all your accounts!" Zack yelled, not ready to give up just yet. Then, he desperately wriggled his hand out to fish his phone from his pocket. Then, he swiftly dialed one of the major banks' presidents since he had their private number. Zack thought this president would be his lifeline the moment the call went through, so he screamed, "Mr. Chaucer, lock Felicia Shaw's overseas transfer! Yes, right now! I'll handle the aftermath!"The person on the other end of the line fell silent for a moment. When he spoke, his voice was cold and filled with impatience. "Are you out of your mind, Zack? Blinding high beams strobed on the mountain road outside the mansion in less than 10 minutes. Sure enough, the roars of engines tearing through the night's silence could be heard by the mansion's occupants. Then, a fleet of SUVs drove into the yard, the car doors snapping open at the same time. The high beams shone on a dozen suited professionals as they hurried over to the mansion's entrance, carrying metal briefcases. The one in the lead was a middle-aged man with gold-rimmed glasses who possessed a cold, ruthless air about him. He ignored the bodyguards who tried to stop him and led his team right in. Soon, the spacious living room was filled to the brim with these cream-of-the-crop employees and their heavy presence. The man in the lead came up to me and bowed deeply. "Mike Zimmer from RedCircle and his 15-man merger team reporting for duty, Ms. Shaw."The middle-aged woman behind Mike stepped forth. "Snow Stone from PWC and her five-man finance and auditing team present, Ms.

Zack pointed at the thick files on the coffee table. "Do you know what due diligence is? Do you have any idea how many regulatory processes you have to go through just for the share transfer? Can you even deal with such complex debt look-through?"The more he spoke, the louder he became. Honestly, it sounded as if he was trying to boost his own morale. "Felicia, you're just an upstart who got lucky enough to earn some money! Do you even know what commercial mergers are? Do you have a legal team? Professional auditors? "You don't even have anyone to come up with contracts, so how are you supposed to sign with them? It won't matter if the Sawyers are fine with it because the banks would've liquidated their company by the time your ragtag team comes up with a contract!" He sat back down and crossed his legs, his vicious, confident smile making a comeback. "So, just give up, Mr. Philip. She can't save you even if she does have the money. Only the top merger team I have could deal wi

Joseph and Irene were shocked. "Where would you even get the money?"Philip was curious too. "What? Are you sure you have the money? Or do you have connections that could help us?"Zack's look of mockery froze upon hearing my words. However, he quickly recovered and let out a grating cackle. He was rocking back and forth from laughter. He found it all so hilarious that he nearly cried tears of laughter. "Are you dumb, Felicia? That's 100 million in cash we're talking about! You're telling me you could pay up? The Sawyers can't even scrape together that much money! This is real cash, not Monopoly money!"He turned to Jonathan, who was still pinned down by his bodyguards, his voice oozing with disdain. "You're a fool, Jonathan. Your sugar baby is trying to flash her nonexistent money around. "All you got her are designer bags and some cars, yes? I bet the designer stuff you bought her is worth around millions, tops."Zack then sauntered over to me and looked down his nose at me.
