I jolt up to a sitting position gasping for air and gripping the sheets and my chest. When I am finally able to catch my breath, I relax back against the pillows. I look around and realize I am in a large canopy style bed with lavender curtains. Directly to my left are glass double doors that lead to a balcony and a white wooden door on the same wall as the bed. I remove the blankets and swing my legs over the edge. I get light headed and take a minute before standing up. I pause to catch my balance and try to start to walk towards the balcony. As I got ready to take my third step, my legs felt weak and gave from underneath me.

I feel strong hands grab my arms and then lift me bridal style. “You shouldn’t be out of bed, you haven’t had time to recover.” I looked up at the person, despite not being able to see in the woods, the familiar gold eyes stared back at me. I take in his features and he has short dark brown to red hair styled messily and an impassive expression, other than the slight worry I can see. I start to realize that looking at him this close up he kind of looks like a masculine version of myself.

“You are Alex.” My statement sounded more like a question and he nods. He lays me back in bed and covers me with the blanket. “Wh-what happened?” Thinking back to last night realizing that at that moment, I thought I had died.

“We were attacked and somehow you got separated from us. You were attacked by one of the Shtrigas and passed out, right when I found you. It will take some time for you to feel 100% again, so you will have to take it easy and rest.”

I nodded my head and looked down at my folded hands. “What are Shtrigas?”

“In layman terms, a soul eater. They feed on people's souls and if you are ever lucky to get away from one it takes a bit to recover.”

“Are we in Daemonium?” I ask with some hesitancy and he nods. I look out through the balcony doors and see an orangish purplish sky behind some mountains. “How long have I been out for?”

Alex sits on the foot of the bed studying me. “For about two weeks.” My eyes go wide.

“Two weeks?!” I start to panic realizing that by now my parents must have reported me missing. “My parents are going to kill me. Where’s my phone?” I see Alex visibly tense as I speak and his eyes turn purple.

“They will not and it will not work here. You can receive the texts but can not reply. Can you please refrain from calling them your parents? They are not and I have explained this to you.”

I feel slightly bad knowing that me calling them my parents upsets him. “But they are. They're the ones who raised me, they need to at least know I'm ok.” I state quietly.

“Yes, because they stole that from your mother and I. If they hadn’t constantly moved you everytime we got close to where you were living, I would have gotten you back a longtime ago.” He starts to yell and I could feel his anger coming off of him. I shrink back into the pillows and he takes a deep breath.“I’m sorry for yelling at you, it is not your fault. I know this is a lot to take in and to adjust to, but what they did does not change that you are our daughter.” I nod my head not knowing what else to say.

After a few moments of silence, I found the courage to speak. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” I looked down at my folded hands. “When you said “for me to adjust to,” does that mean I'm not going back home?” Tears start to welled up in my eyes, at the thought of not seeing my parents, brother, and friends.

He sighs a bit. “Let me ask you this. Was there ever a time you felt out of place with them? Ever questioned if you were actually their daughter?” I looked up at him and nodded my head because he was right, I had ever since Jared was born. I remember when I was 12 and questioned why he had blonde hair like them and I had my naturally ombre brown to red hair. “I get they raised you, but you can not expect us to turn a blind eye now that we have found you. As much as I get your love for them, it is not reciprocated. To them you were just a way to make money, especially since they had a child of their own. They are not searching for you and as hard as it is for you to hear this, you need to. They know that I found you and if I was to let you return, you would have nothing to return to. They didn't waste any time to pack up and leave. They chose to run and didn't even attempt to come find you.” The tears began to run down my face.

Even though I want to believe they did care for me. He is right the love I had for them was no longer reciprocated. That stopped when Jared was born and I started to sob loudly as the realization sets in. I feel arms wrap around me and hear a soft apology being whispered.

After breakfast, I went to my office and was staring at a document on my laptop when my phone rang. I pick it up without looking at the caller ID and place it on speaker, "Speak.""Dad, something's wrong. We're on our way back, but she fainted." I tense, hearing the worry in his voice. He's been very protective of Naomi since we came back, even sat with her the first week of her being unconscious. "We'll be there in about 5 minutes."I tell him I will meet him at the door with the doctor, and quickly call him to meet us in the front. When he pulls up, he rushes to grab her from the backseat. We carry her up to her room, and the doctor takes a look at her while we wait in the hall. "What happened?"AJ paces back and forth. "I don't know. We were walking around the shopping center, and she told me she needed a break, so we stopped at the cafe. When I came back from getting our drinks, Bre was there, and then I saw her put her head in her hands, and next thing I knew, she was fainting."

When I wake, I'm in my room, there's a knock at the door, and I open it. AJ is standing there smiling, "Great, you're awake. I wanted to see if you were still up for the tour." I smile back and nod. "You should probably grab a jacket since it's getting a little late." I nod and go into the closet to grab my shoes and a jacket. As we walk down the hall, AJ is typing away at his phone and looks over at me. "Let me know if you need a break while we are out. Dad told me your walk in the garden earlier took a lot out of you." I nod my head and continue to stare down at my feet as we walk. "Sorry, didn't mean to embarrass you." We climb into his car, and he starts to describe everything we drive past, even the high school. "Will I have to go? To school here?" I ask quietly, I don't think I could be the new girl at another school, let alone in a whole other dimension."Probably. But I don't think anytime soon, so that you can become adjusted and acquainted with the way of things here." I lo

I awake with a slight headache and sit up, looking around the room. I realize I am alone and stand carefully. I look around the room in search of the bathroom. I decided to try the black door by the balcony first, and internally dance it is. I turn the light on and look in the mirror. My hair is stuck to my face, and my eyes are puffy and red from crying. I close my eyes and take a deep breath."Maybe being here won't be a bad thing," I speak out loud and open my eyes. I had always found that speaking my thoughts out loud helped me work things out. "Maybe here I will fit in and actually feel wanted." When I walk out of the bathroom, there is a note on the bed.Take all the time you need. There are clothes in the closet, the door directly in front of the bed. When you are ready, whether today or tomorrow, you can ask the guard outside your door to bring you to the garden. You are not a prisoner; he is there for your protection, so feel free to explore.~AlexI laughed a little while re

I wrap my arms around my daughter as she cries and whispers a soft apology. As much as I did not want to make her upset, I needed her to realize she was just a pawn in their little game, one they will not win.An hour or so passes and her once loud sobs have turned into soft snores. I lay her back onto the bed and tuck the blankets around her. I kiss her forehead and walk out the room. Marcus stands leaning against the wall outside the door. “Did you have to be so harsh?”“Did I have to? No. Did I need to be, yes. She's stubborn and has put a lot of faith into David and Linda. As much as I hate to admit it, she is just as stubborn as me.” I chuckled and gave a small smile before my expression reverted back to its usual serious one. “Where are we at with locating them?”Marcus rubs his tired face, “they are covering their tracks well. When we went back to the house it was burnt to ash.” Despite Marcus’ young age he was one of my best trackers, even better than his father. I nod and st

Marcus grabs my waist and pushes me behind him, “Your highness.” He did a bow-like gesture. “What are you doing?” Marcus opens his mouth to say something but doesn’t. “ And do not even think about lying. Your job was to stay hidden and to keep your eyes on her.” The purple eyes slowly faded to gold and Marcus sighed. “I was planning on it but then she snuck out. I’ll take whatever punishment you deem fit, but I didn’t tell her anything other than who I was.” I realized that they were talking about me and for what felt like the hundredth time tonight, I was confused by what was going on. I grip onto Marcus’ arm and take in the details of what seems to be the leader. He’s tall at least 6 feet and has short dark brown hair that faded into a reddish hue and gold eyes. I touched the ends of my short dark brown hair that also had a reddish hue to the ends. “No one is getting punished or harmed.” I let out a breath, I didn't know I was holding in and loosened my hold on Marcus’ arm.
