TREASURE

Everything hurts.

My head throbs where I smacked it during the struggle to survive. My arms sting from a dozen scrapes. My elbows are raw and burning. I feel like I got into a fight with two trucks.

Oh wait. I did.

I'm standing at the side of the road with Winter, Nath, and Ace, still processing what we just heard. The audio recording has ended, but Olivia's voice still echoes in my head. The confession. The slap. Mike's rage.

Winter stands there looking shell-shocked, her phone trembling slightly in her hand. Nath has his arm around her shoulders. Ace is beside me, first aid kit in hand, his face tight with anger.

Behind us, the wreckage of Blair's car is visible in the distance, illuminated by emergency lights that paint everything in harsh reds and blues. I'd been crouching on the ground near here when they found me, trying to process what had just happened, trying to ignore the pain screaming through my body.

Now I'm on my feet.

I chuckle, which immediatel

OLIVIA I watch him kneel. I watch Nathaniel Cole get down on one knee in front of Winter and offer her that stupid rose like she's some kind of princess. My fingers dig into the tablecloth so hard I think the fabric might rip. Everyone around me is sighing. Swooning. Whispering about how romantic it is. How lucky Winter is. How every woman in the room wishes they were her. I want to scream. Nath is still singing, his voice deep and rich, his eyes locked on Winter like she's the only person in the entire world. And Winter, that pathetic little mouse, is standing there crying like she's just won the lottery. Which, apparently, she has. When he slips that ring on her finger, the whole room erupts in applause. People are standing. Clapping. Cheering like they've just witnessed some kind of miracle. I stay seated, my jaw clenched so tight I think my teeth might crack. A ring. He gives her an actual ring. Not like the cheap thing Mike gave her years ago. This one looks expensive.

WINTER Once we're outside, away from the noise and the crowds, I take a deep breath of cool night air. We continue holding hands as we walk toward the garden in the resort. The path is lit by small lanterns that cast soft, romantic light on everything. "You were so impressive," I tell Nath, squeezing his hand. "I'm sorry for underestimating your talent. I genuinely thought you couldn't sing. I feel like an idiot now." He smiles. "It doesn't matter. In fact, I'm happy you thought so because that made the surprise even better." "You really went all out," I say, shaking my head in disbelief. "The singing, the ring, the whole performance. I'm still processing it all." "I wanted to do something special for you," Nath says, his voice soft and sincere. "Especially because of how you've been feeling lately. I noticed you've been a little unhappy because of some things that have happened. I wanted to find a way to make you smile." He pauses, then continues. "The singing competition gav

WINTER I take the rose to my nose and inhale deeply. The scent is delicate, sweet, almost impossibly romantic. Like someone bottled the concept of "perfect moment" and turned it into a flower. And then the tears start falling. I can't help it. They just come, streaming down my face like I'm in some kind of emotional commercial for jewelry or life insurance or something equally sentimental. Nath is still singing at this point, his voice wrapping around me like the world's most expensive blanket. He gets up from his knee, moves closer, and gently wipes the tears from my eyes with his thumb. His touch is so tender it makes me want to cry more, which is counterproductive but also completely unavoidable. He continues to sing, his eyes never leaving mine as he takes my hand and gradually leads me up onto the stage with him. Oh God. We're on stage now. In front of everyone. This is happening. I'm hyperaware of every single person watching us. The weight of their stares presses again

WINTER I look down at my black dress. It's nice. It's safe. It's boring. I rush to the closet and start pulling out other options. I finally settle on a red dress that hugs my body in ways that make me slightly uncomfortable but also make me look good, so I'm conflicted. It perfectly matches Nath's royal blue suit, though. We're going to look like a coordinated couple. Like we planned this. Which we didn't, but nobody needs to know that. I touch up my makeup, making myself a little more glamorous, and finally turn to Nath. "So, how do I look now?" "As beautiful as ever," Nath replies, and his voice is so sincere it makes my heart do a weird flutter thing. "You know, no matter what you wear, you will always be the most beautiful woman in the room, right?" I feel my face heat up. "It seems the moment is already getting to you. Look at you, being so romantic. Who are you and what have you done with my fake fiancé?" He laughs. "He became your real fiancé somewhere along the

WINTER After dropping Treasure back home, we begin the drive back to the resort, and I finally feel like I can breathe again. The heaviness in my chest is gone. That crushing weight that's been sitting on my lungs since I got the call about Treasure's accident has lifted. I feel lighter. Almost floaty, actually. Like someone untied a concrete block from my ankles. Although I really, really want to confront Olivia right now. I want to march up to her, reveal her psychotic face to everyone, and watch the police drag her away in handcuffs while I eat popcorn and narrate her crimes like a true crime podcast host. But I trust Nath. He said he would take care of everything and get justice for Treasure, and I believe him. Mostly because he's annoyingly competent at everything, and also because if I confront Olivia myself, I might actually commit a crime, and orange is not my color. I lean against Nath's shoulder, breathing in his scent...something clean and expensive that I can't

  • The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming    Chapter Sixty Four

TREASURE When morning comes, I'm the first one awake. Which is shocking because I'm not a morning person. I'm barely an afternoon person. I'm more of an "don't talk to me until I've had coffee and made three life-altering decisions" person. But today, my body apparently decided to wake up at the ungodly hour of... I check the clock... seven AM. Six. In the morning. This is a hate crime against sleep. I quietly slip out of bed, careful not to wake Winter, and tiptoe to the bathroom like a ninja. A very injured ninja who moves like she's eighty years old. The bathroom is a whole new level of depressing. It looks like a crime scene from a discount detective show. The mirror has a crack running through it that looks suspiciously like someone punched it. I'm choosing to believe it was a ghost. A very angry ghost with poor impulse control. The shower curtain has a pattern that I think was supposed to be flowers but looks more like sad blobs. The tiles are that specific sh
