Chapter 5

Author: Cutie Kitty
I couldn't be bothered to expose Ethan's lie. I retrieved the divorce agreement I had prepared from my bag.

Originally, I planned to wait until I settled down in my new job before finding him to sign it. Since we happened to run into each other here, I might as well get it done now.

"What's this?"

Ethan opened it curiously. Just as he was about to read it, we heard Mia's scream from above.

"Mia, what happened?"

Ethan's voice instantly became anxious. Without even looking at the document, he quickly signed the agreement and prepared to leave.

"Aren't you going to check what you just signed?" I couldn't help asking.

Ethan's tone was completely indifferent. "What else could you possibly want besides money?"

After saying that, he walked away quickly before I could respond.

I let out a self-deprecating laugh.

His silhouette slowly overlapped with a memory from years ago.

Back then, I had fallen seriously ill. I was in the hospital but couldn't afford the surgery.

Ethan told me not to worry. He said he had a way. But when I woke up in the middle of the night, I saw him sitting there exhausted. He was making call after call while trying to borrow money for my treatment.

From that moment on, I secretly promised to myself that no matter what happened, I would never let him down.

Later, our company gradually grew bigger. Money was no longer a problem, but Ethan and I could never return to the way we were.

I put the divorce agreement back into my bag.

As long as I waited one month for the divorce cooling-off period to end, Ethan and I would have nothing to do with each other anymore.

By the time I took the elevator up to the private dining room, my friend had already arrived.

After a few rounds of drinks, my friend pulled me aside and started talking about the past. She mentioned how I had rejected starting a business with her so many times and asked if it was because I had a boyfriend.

Back then, Ethan didn't want our relationship to be public, so very few people knew about us. Even when we got married, Ethan only invited business partners. He didn't invite any relatives or friends.

At the time, he explained that we lived in a new city. Even if we announced our wedding, our friends wouldn't be able to come anyway. It would've just looked like we were asking for wedding gifts. We might as well have kept it simple and got married unannounced. We could hold another celebration after we went back.

I didn't think much of it back then, but now that I thought about it, his arrangement was clearly just a roundabout way of creating an opportunity for Mia to take my place as the bride.

"We're already divorced," I said calmly.

The room instantly fell silent.

Everyone looked at me as if they weren't sure whether they should comfort me.

I picked up my glass first. "I was married to a jerk. Getting divorced is actually a good thing. From now on, I can focus on staying here and making big money with my girls."

"That's right! Let's make big money!"

Soon, the room became lively again. Everyone raised their glasses.

The next day, I successfully signed a contract with my friend and began focusing on my career.

The business operations were already well-developed. With my new technology added in, the company grew even faster. In just two weeks, our profits had tripled.

My friend was thrilled. She held a celebration party specifically for me. The location was set at a resort outside the city.

I never expected that I would run into Ethan and Mia there.

They were sitting by a bonfire. Ethan was attentively peeling shrimp for Mia.

I didn't know what Mia said, but Ethan smiled and placed the shrimp in her mouth. He then lifted his hand, which was covered in a sauce, and pretended he was going to smear it on her face. Mia laughed and dodged.

Just when Ethan thought he had succeeded, Mia suddenly jumped into his arms.

Ethan's ears turned red. He looked completely delighted.

I recalled that before this, Ethan hated when I played around like that.

He always complained that eating shrimp made his hands dirty, and so he never liked eating shrimp. Every time, I had to peel them for him and coax him into finishing them.

I was about to tell my friend that she should leave first and let me handle the investigation myself. But before I could speak, my friend said firmly, "I believe Nora wouldn't do this. I'm willing to cooperate with the investigation with her."But let's make one thing clear first. If this turns out to be a false accusation against Nora, how are you going to apologize to her? How are you going to compensate our company for the losses?"Her confidence was unwavering.Mia probably didn't expect her to stand on my side. The cockiness she showed earlier disappeared. But I didn't want to drag innocent people into this. I turned to my friend. "It's okay. I can handle this myself. You still have the entire company behind you. Don't risk getting involved in this mess."My friend looked angry. She immediately scolded me."Do you hear yourself? I was the one who brought you here. I'm the person closest to you here. It's fine if everyone else betrays you, but if even I don't stand in front o

Back then, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I transferred the money back to Ethan. Soon after, we got back together. Was he trying to compensate me in the same way again? But he seemed to have forgotten one thing. This kind of compensation meant nothing to the person who was hurt.It only bought him a clear conscience.I transferred the money back without hesitation. But soon, the transfer failed. Ethan had already closed the account.I was thinking about how to deal with it when my friend sent me a message. After chatting for a while, it got late, and I completely put the matter aside. In the new year, our company continued to grow bigger and bigger. However, something unexpected happened on my first day back at work. The moment I arrived at the company, I saw a group of people gathered at the entrance. They seemed to be arguing about something."What happened?"I walked over in confusion. When my subordinates saw me coming, they immediately moved aside. Only then did

I froze. I thought I had misheard. I stood up and walked toward the stairwell.I happened to see Mia and Ethan standing there. Both of them looked furious. It seemed like they had just had a fight.I was surprised. After all, before Ethan and I divorced, whenever I saw them, they always seemed inseparable. They had always gotten along perfectly.Ethan sneered. "How are we supposed to keep this child with the company in this condition? We can't even handle our own problems right now. Will you have enough funds after the baby is born? How are you going to raise the baby?"Mia was stunned. "Are you blaming me for ruining the company?"The atmosphere fell into a strange silence.Ethan didn't answer. There was an indescribable emotion in his eyes.I knew what he was thinking, and only when he was with Mia would he consider her feelings and avoid hurting her.If the person standing in front of him today had been me, and if I had been the one who made the mistake, I couldn't even im

Ethan explained that Mia couldn't go home for the New Year, and she was all alone here, so he wanted to keep her company. He also said that I had always been alone anyway. I must have already gotten used to the loneliness, and being by myself would actually be more comfortable for me.But he seemed to have forgotten one thing. The reason I was alone in the first place was because of him.I scrolled through my phone mindlessly. Soon, my finger stopped. Mia had posted something, and she even tagged me.In the photo, Mia was covering her ears. She laughed as she buried herself in Ethan's arms. In the distance, fireworks lit up the night sky. There was a caption.[It's okay to be abandoned. You'll eventually find someone who makes you happier and is more comfortable to be around.]It was obvious she had posted it just to provoke me.I thought about it for a moment. I then liked the post and commented.[You look so happy, unlike me. I can only curl up alone on the sofa in the new h

That trick never failed, and Ethan used it every time. But he seemed to have forgotten one thing. It worked because I loved him back then. Now, I only thought he was immature.Seeing that I didn't react, Ethan looked awkward. After a moment of silence, he finally used his ultimate move."Alright, Nora. I know what you're really upset about."Tomorrow, I'll increase your salary and promote you to director. Consider it compensation. Let's just drop this, okay?"Before I could answer, my friend, who had been silent the entire time, finally spoke."Compensation with shares?"She chuckled. "Sorry, Mr. Ex-husband. Nora is already a shareholder of our company now. Trying to poach her in front of me probably isn't appropriate."Ethan's face turned pale. "What did you say? What shareholder?"My friend ignored his expression and turned to me with a smile. "Nora, so this is the ex-husband you told me about?"You rejected me so many times because of him. I thought he must love you deepl

I deliberately held up the final signature page of the divorce agreement in front of him.Ethan froze. The contemptuous look on his face faded. It was replaced by a hint of seriousness. Then, as if he had thought of something, he snorted."Nora, do you know what the consequences are for forging such important documents?"Your imitation is pretty convincing, but I don't remember ever signing this."He raised his brows smugly. He was certain that I had forged his signature.I didn't bother explaining. I simply handed the divorce agreement to him. "Then take a closer look. Is this your signature?"Ethan looked annoyed, but he still accepted it suspiciously. After carefully examining the signature, his brows furrowed. He had probably realized it too. This really was his signature.Ethan's signature was distinctive. There were many tiny details that would have been extremely difficult to copy. His expression darkened. For nearly thirty seconds, neither of us spoke. Finally, Etha
