Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
It was not until the early hours of the morning that I finally managed to get a cab.

The doctor said our son's throat was extremely delicate and that if I had brought him in any later, his ability to speak in the future might have been affected.

When he saw the "answers" AI had given me, he scolded me in exasperation.

"What are you parents thinking? If AI has all the answers, then what do you need doctors for?"

The tears I had been holding back for so long instantly began to fall.

The doctor quickly fell silent, but I shook my head.

"You're right. Thank you."

I stayed by my son's side all night while he received IV medication to reduce the inflammation.

Meanwhile, Vivi posted a photo of herself and Theodore on the concert's giant screen.

"The kiss cam picked us at random. Who knew Teddy could be such a good sport!"

I tortured myself by zooming in on the photo. The lipstick smeared across the corner of Theodore's mouth was unmistakable.

I remembered begging him to take us to Disneyland for our son's first birthday.

He had waved me away impatiently. "It's hot, exhausting, and packed with people. What's so fun about that?"

Yet in that photo, he was smiling more brightly and freely than I had seen in a long time.

That night, our son developed a high fever. I hurriedly carried him from floor to floor, trying to complete the hospital admission process.

Then a familiar voice came from around the stairwell.

"Vivi, how are you feeling? I'll get you admitted right away."

I looked up and saw Theodore rushing toward us with Vivi in his arms.

He was so anxious that he did not even notice us.

"Doctor, her blood sugar dropped, and she fainted. She needs to be seen immediately."

The young nurse beside him looked troubled.

"Mr. Shaw, we're currently at capacity. Your VIP membership does give your party priority for the next available room, but..."

She glanced at my son and me. "These two are your wife and child, aren't they? In that case, the baby should be admitted first..."

Only then did Theodore follow her gaze and see us. He froze, but recovered almost immediately.

"Oh... no. This young lady is the one who needs to be admitted. Her condition is more urgent."

That single word, "no," struck me like a sharp slap across the face.

The nurse knew my son and me, and the sympathy in her eyes was unmistakable.

Vivi was rushed into a room, and Theodore hurried after her without looking back once.

My son was growing hotter in my arms, and even my heart seemed to tremble. The entrance to the ward was crowded with people waiting for a bed, and every passing minute felt like torture.

Half an hour later, Theodore emerged from Vivi's room with an uncomfortable frown.

"I just spoke to the department head. The baby's throat is only slightly inflamed. He can get an IV in the hallway. There's no need to admit him.

"Vivi fainted on the way back. If she isn't thoroughly examined, she could suffer lasting complications. Don't be so petty."

He reached out to touch our son, but I made no attempt to hide the way I pulled away.

"We don't need the bed anymore."

With that, I turned and walked away with our son in my arms.

Theodore's hand remained suspended in midair, his brow twitching slightly.

Families filled the hospital corridors, while I alone wove through the crowd with my son in my arms, searching for somewhere he could receive an injection to bring down his fever.

Thankfully, his fever finally broke the next morning.

Soon afterward, an immigration officer called and asked me to come in to collect the result of our application.

Theodore's company was relocating overseas the following month, but the immigration applications for our son and me had still not been approved.

As soon as I entered the lobby, I spotted Theodore's subordinate, Charlie Kent.

He greeted me warmly.

"Mrs. Shaw, what a coincidence.

"Are you really willing to live apart from Mr. Shaw? Raising a child by yourself will be so difficult."

Confused, I assumed he had misunderstood the situation and responded with a polite smile.

"Our immigration applications are still being processed. They should be approved this time. It's not as though someone else could take our places."

Charlie looked utterly bewildered.

"But Ms. Wells has already taken the immigration slot. I handled all the paperwork for Mr. Shaw, and I'm here to pick up her approval letter today."

"June."His voice was choked with emotion.Theodore stood there in a brown overcoat, looking worn down and exhausted.I raised my eyes to meet his. This time, I didn't look away like before."Have you thought it through?"He faltered, clearly taken aback that my first words to him were so cold."June, is divorce really the only thing you want to talk to me about now?"I gave a faint smile. "What else is there?"Theodore's eyes suddenly reddened. He pressed his lips together before looking at me again."I've decided not to move overseas."We'll stay here and go back to the way things were. I'll take care of our son from now on. If you want to work, then work. Whatever you want is fine."He sounded as though he were making a huge concession.I merely shrugged."I can already do all of that."Theodore, I suddenly realized something. My life without you isn't any different from before."His expression stiffened, as though the words had struck somewhere painful. But it was the truth.Whenev

I left the city with my son and began traveling around the country.I used to beg Theodore to take trips with us, but his answer was always no. It wasn't until I saw new places and experienced different things that I finally realized something. We could have just as much fun without him. When we arrived in another city, a string of messages came through on my phone.Theodore had written, "If you don't come, then don't expect to ever see me again."I didn't reply. That was exactly what I wanted.Life with my son wasn't much different after leaving Theodore. Even before that, I had handled everything myself, big or small.Since our son was born, Theodore had never once made him a bottle or put him to sleep. There was one thing he'd said that was absolutely true."Besides, you've been doing fine taking care of him on your own. You're getting better at it every day."And I had.Maybe my son didn't need a father after all.The divorce, however, was going nowhere, so I finally called Theodor

"T-Teddy..."Vivi shot to her feet, her face turning pale.Theodore walked toward her, glancing at the men before turning his eyes on her."What did you mean just now? What do you mean you framed June for the whole thing?"The men exchanged uneasy looks, but none of them dared to speak.Vivi forced a smile and tried to play it off."We were... we were just joking around. We were saying how kind June is..."But as she spoke, she noticed Theodore's expression growing darker."Aren't these the men who assaulted you? Why are they at your place joking around with you?"Vivi swallowed hard, scrambling for an explanation, but the men quickly started pleading for themselves."Mr. Shaw, we were only doing what we were paid to do. Please don't blame us. It was Vivi-"Vivi shot the man a warning look, and he immediately shut his mouth. That was all Theodore needed to hear.He let out a humorless laugh. "Vivi Wells, you really put on one hell of a show. You even had me fooled."His expression grew

"June? June?"He called June's name twice, but the only answer was the hollow echo of his own voice. He set down what he was carrying and walked toward the bedroom. When he pushed open the door, he started to call out again."June..."Then he stopped. All the bottles and toiletries that had once filled the room were gone, and so was the stroller that had always sat in the corner."Fine." Theodore planted his hands on his hips and stared at the half-empty room. "You really have to play this kind of childish game? You're already a mother, but you're still acting like a kid..."He sounded exasperated, yet part of him felt that this was more like the June he remembered. She used to get upset easily and give him the silent treatment whenever they fought. But no matter how angry she was, all it usually took was a little coaxing from him before she softened again. The thought made him smile despite himself. He took out his phone and called her.But with every unanswered attempt, the same auto

The slap left me completely stunned, and the metallic taste of blood quickly spread through my mouth."I tricked her? I don't even have her phone number."Theodore didn't listen to my explanation. He grabbed me and took me straight to the hospital, pulling me along so quickly that I stumbled the whole way.The baby was frightened and cried loudly in my arms, but Theodore didn't seem to care at all. When we entered Vivi's room, she was curled up on the hospital bed, trembling. The moment she saw me, she immediately threw herself into Theodore's arms."I'm scared. I'm so scared..."I was still trying to figure out what was happening when the five burly men standing near the door turned toward me and started nodding deferentially."Ms. Ward, we did exactly what you told us and assaulted her. Are you satisfied with the result?"I frowned, completely confused."I don't even know you-"Before I could finish, Theodore shoved his phone in front of my face."You're still trying to deny it? Then

My blood ran cold when I saw the immigration approval letter in Charlie's hands.Sure enough, Vivi Wells's name was printed right there on the page.At that moment, the clerk behind the counter slid my own results toward me. I looked down and saw the same answer I had seen so many times before.Rejected.Charlie finally realized what was going on and quietly asked if I was okay. I shook my head, too drained to even manage a thank-you.That evening, Theodore came home and found the dining table buried beneath stacks of immigration applications. The moment he saw them, a look of understanding crossed his face."So you found out."That was all he said. There was no apology in his voice, not even a trace of guilt. He walked over to me, and when he spoke again, his tone had softened."Vivi has wanted to live there ever since she was a kid. I asked a friend to help with her immigration application, so she ended up taking the spot that would've gone to you."My hand, resting on the table, slo
