Chapter 3

Penulis: Crystal K
The next day, the door to my office flew open.

"Tessa!" Sarah was pale, her voice shaking. "The border patrol was ambushed by high-level rogues. Freya's left arm… it was completely torn off!"

Even after everything, the healer in me took over. I sprinted toward the ICU.

But I barely made it into the hallway. I hadn't even pulled on my gloves when a wave of furious Alpha energy slammed into me.

Callum was there. Covered in blood.

His eyes were crimson. A beast on the verge of snapping.

He didn't ask for my help. He grabbed my shoulders and slammed me against the cold wall.

"Are you satisfied now?!" he roared, the stench of blood washing over me.

Pain shot through my back. I winced. "Let go. I have to stop the bleeding…"

"Drop the fake concern, Tessa!"

Callum's power crushed down on me. His eyes were full of cold hatred and raw panic.

"If you hadn't thrown your little tantrum yesterday, if you hadn't threatened to break our bond and sent a shockwave through the pack's mind-link, Freya never would have been distracted! She never would have gotten hurt!"

I froze.

The sheer insanity of his accusation shattered the last bit of respect I had for him.

"You're blaming a tactical failure on me?" I was trembling with rage.

"Tactical failure? What do you know about war?" He leaned in, his voice dripping with scorn. "If we weren't out there bleeding for you, fighting off our enemies, those little formulas you brew in your perfect, sterile lab would be worthless! Did you have to do this? Did you have to prove your point in the cruelest way possible?"

The pressure of his soul-bond, combined with the aftershocks of my rejection, sent waves of pain through my heart.

Tears spilled from my eyes, hot and uncontrollable.

Seeing me cry, Callum thought he'd won. He thought I finally understood my "mistake."

The beast in him retreated slightly.

He let go of my shoulders and raised a hand, a disgusting, fake tenderness in his gesture, as he tried to wipe my tears away.

"Grow up. Stop throwing fits over the pack's security," he commanded, his voice full of the arrogance of a king, sure that I would bow my head like always.

"Don't touch me."

I jerked my head away, disgusted. I scrambled back, putting space between us.

Callum's hand hung in the air. His face turned to stone.

"Understood, Alpha." I met his eyes, my voice dead.

His pupils contracted. The word clearly stung him.

"From this moment on, I am no longer your personal healer." I ripped the stethoscope from my neck. "Since my serums are so worthless, you can figure it out yourselves."

"Callum…"

A weak voice came from the hospital room.

Freya was propped up in bed, her face pale. She tugged pathetically at Callum's bloodstained sleeve.

"Don't fight with Tessa… She just cares about you too much. I don't blame her for losing her temper and distracting me… cough, cough…"

What a perfect, noble little victim.

Looking at this pair of arrogant, self-righteous pricks, I let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

I walked over to the medical waste bin and threw my white coat—the symbol of the pack's chief healer—inside.

Then I turned and walked away.

For the next two weeks, Callum gave me the silent treatment.

He thought he could break me. Force me to come crawling back.

He even spent a fortune hiring a specialist from another territory to heal Freya, just to prove he didn't need me.

I didn't care. I just kept packing my things, getting ready to leave Red Maple for good.

Two weeks later, in the afternoon.

I had just left the main administration building when a healed Freya blocked my path.

She wore a new, expensive trench coat. Her left arm was perfectly fine. Her face held the gracious smile of a victor.

"Tessa, you've been sulking for two weeks. Isn't it time to let it go?"

She walked toward me, her gaze condescending.

"Go apologize to Callum. He'll forgive you. After all, even I've decided to forgive you for your little outburst."

"Forgive me?"

I stared into her eyes, almost laughing.

"Freya, you've never even read a basic tactics manual, have you?"

The smile on her face froze. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about how you rush into every ambush with nothing but brute force. The only reason you're so reckless is because you knew I was always there to patch you up."

I stepped toward her. My voice was quiet, but every word was a blade.

"You're a parasite. You've been feeding off my medical resources, using my advanced serums to build your 'greatest warrior' reputation. Without me, the vampires would have killed you a hundred times over."

"You—!" Freya's mask of grace shattered. Her face went white.

I ignored her.

Looking at this face that was once so familiar, all I felt was a cold, alien distance.

  • The Healer Who Stopped Healing Him   Chapter 9

Tessa's POVStepping out of that bar, the cold northern air filled my lungs.I took a deep breath. I could still feel the echo of Callum's desperate howl on my skin.Wyatt took off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. The clean scent of rich cedarwood wrapped around me."Cold?" he murmured, his eyes soft."No." I leaned into his side and started laughing. Tears streamed down my face. They weren't sad tears. They were tears of relief. Of freedom."What's so funny?" He gently pinched my cheek."I'm laughing because I'm finally free," I said, looking up at him. "Wyatt, thank you.""Don't thank me," he whispered, kissing my forehead. "Thank us."On the way back to the hotel, we passed an art gallery. In the window was a painting of a golden wheat field, so warm and bright the sunlight seemed to be spilling out of the frame."That one," I said, pointing. "For the lobby of the medical center. To remind everyone who walks in that there's always light after the darkness."Wyatt bou

Tessa's POVLess than two hours after we got back to the hotel, the lobby's revolving door squealed as someone slammed into it.I looked up. I almost didn't recognize her.Freya. She was skeletal, her cheekbones jutting out. Three jagged claw marks ran from the corner of her eye to her jaw, the edges of the wound a sickly purple. Vampire venom. The proud, deadly Beta who had flaunted her battle record a year ago was gone. Without my advanced serums, her so-called power had been burned away to nothing."Tessa…" She scrambled toward me, her voice a high, broken whine. "Please. Save us."The hotel guests stared.I held my coffee cup, not even bothering to look up. "Freya, do you know how pathetic you look right now?""I know I wronged you," she sobbed, collapsing onto the cold marble floor. "I was jealous. Jealous of how Callum's wolf was naturally drawn to you. I'm the one who leaked the secure tablet's override code. I wanted to ruin you…""So you destroyed my father's reputation, and n

Tessa's POVOne year later. A private airstrip in the southern neutral zone."How does it feel to be back on the northern border, my queen?"A low, sexy voice murmured in my ear. A custom-tailored coat, smelling of rich cedarwood and pure Alpha, settled firmly over my shoulders.I turned and smiled into Wyatt's laughing eyes.He was the leader of the southern Obsidian pack, a pure-blooded Alpha from a line far older than Red Maple's. He was also a billionaire, the CEO of a global tech empire. His gold-rimmed glasses couldn't hide the predatory gleam in his eyes, but whenever he looked at me, that power was banked, replaced by a deep, restrained adoration."As long as I'm with you, even the northern wind doesn't feel so cold." I leaned into his strong embrace. In the year since I'd left Red Maple, I had taken my new formulas south. Wyatt had given me unlimited resources and respect. His wolf was naturally protective of me, instinctively deferential to my own power. We were here to bid o

Callum's POVThe study door crashed open, slamming against the wall.Freya stormed in, her eyes swollen, her voice sharp and shrill."You lied to me!" She pointed at me, her whole body shaking. "You said Tessa's father took the blame! You've been lying to me all day! I went to the Silver Moon estate—she hasn't been abandoned by her family at all!"I tore off my tie and threw it on the desk, my patience gone."I don't have time for this.""No time?" She lunged at me, grabbing my shirt. "Tessa's gone! She blocked you! Do you have any idea what you've destroyed?"I shoved her hand off me, my voice like a razor's edge."I'll tell you why I did it."I stared at her, hammering each word home."If you lose your authority, the front line collapses. Tessa… she has the entire Silver Moon council behind her. I had to use her father to block the fallout, just for a little while. I'd use my power and money to make it go away later. She grew up in a gilded cage. She'll get over it. I'll go get her i

An hour later, I stood in front of my parents' estate in the heart of Silver Moon territory, suitcase in hand. The moment I pushed the door open, I froze. My father was sitting in a plush armchair in the study, wearing a silk robe, calmly reading an old book.A fire crackled in the hearth. This was not a man about to be tried for treason."Dad?" I asked, my voice cautious. "The news said…""The news," my father scoffed, closing the book. He looked at me, his eyes sharp. "Tessa, did you think I'd spent thirty years on the Council just to be some pushover?"He pulled a file from a hidden compartment and tossed it on the table in front of me.The seal of the High Werewolf Council was stamped on top, blood-red and stark."Application for political protection and countersuit," my father said, his voice cold, almost cruel. "It was approved three days ago. The Tribunal has already secretly acquired the true communication logs from the Red Maple front line."My head snapped up. "You knew?""I

"Move." I shoved past Freya's shoulder, not giving her a second glance.I'd only taken a few steps when my phone started vibrating like crazy. It was the Red Maple head of security."Miss Tessa! Something terrible has happened!" His voice was choked with panic. "The High Council just issued a top-level warrant! The formula for the secret healing serum… the one your father sponsored in the council… it's been stolen by the vampires! The Tribunal is launching a full investigation!"I stopped dead. The blood drained from my face."That's impossible!" I choked out. "The highest level of access to that data is restricted to me, Callum, and the frontline commander, Freya! The system is physically isolated!"Only ragged breathing came from the other end of the line.Ten minutes later. The emergency council room. The air was thick with tension.Callum sat at the head of the table, his face a thundercloud.Freya was at his right, her hands clenched so tight her knuckles were white."Run a full d
