Chapter 5 It Doesn't Matter

Author: Nina Fortune
"Ow! Mr. Sylvaria, please don't kill me! If you don't want me here, I can leave. I can leave right now!"

I could not have cared less about Zachary's act. All I wanted to do was tear the pajamas off him. They were my mother's final act of love. And now, they had become a symbol of betrayal.

My fingers had just touched the fabric when Yvonne came barging in with a bowl of piping hot chicken soup. She splashed it on me without even asking for the story.

The scalding liquid rained down my head and streamed down my shoulders. My skin screamed in agony, but that was not enough for her. Her hand flew across my face with a sharp crack.

"What is wrong with you? Get your head checked! Don't go after my guest!"

Her eyes were filled with disgust, and my heart shouted out in pain. Tears trickled down my cheeks. This woman was the one I used to treasure, the one I swore I'd protect with my life. Perhaps I had never known her at all.

She kept fussing over Zachary, but not a single word reached my ears.

Zachary said, "Oh, what a shame I didn't get to have your chicken soup."

Yvonne only felt more heartbroken for him. "Now's not the time for that! I can always make another if you want. For my whole life too."

I had never known she could make chicken soup. I had never even known she could cook. But then again, it had never been for me.

A cold, hopeless feeling seeped into my veins and spread through my entire body. It froze all my fury, leaving behind nothing but a wasteland and a dead heart.

An outsider wearing my mother's last keepsake was worth more to this woman than her own husband. Our marriage was perhaps nothing to her. I spent seven years humbling myself just to make her happy, but that meant nothing.

Slowly, my hand touched my face, and I wiped the greasy liquid off.

Then, with fury burning in my chest, I roared, "You know how much those pajamas mean to me! I cherished them more than anything! You know. You know damn well how much I care. And now this piece of trash is wearing them.

"He burned them with his cigarette, and you're defending him? You're my wife! You splashed hot soup on me and slapped me for him. What am I to you? What is my mother's final keepsake to you? Nothing?"

She shot me an impatient glare, and her voice grew increasingly impatient. "It's just some stupid pajamas. You're overreacting. Honestly, you're such a loser. You'll never get rid of that poverty buried in your bones. If you say anything rude to Zach again, I will make you pay!"

Her face was filled with fury and not a single hint of remorse. She was defending Zachary without even thinking. My heart was well and truly dead. All my pain, anger, and suffering faded with it, leaving only exhaustion and cold indifference behind.

I refused to give these bastards a moment of my life. So, in the calmest voice I had ever used, I said, "Let's get divorced, Yvonne."

"Please… Please give me another chance! Give me a chance to stand by your side again! I don't need anything else!"Please, please… Remember how much you loved me? I just need a chance to redeem myself. I'll love you with everything I have! I'll make it up to you even if it takes forever! Please forgive me for old times' sake!"Her tears fused with her snot, and she begged like a groveling tramp asking for pocket change.I spared a cursory glance at the sorry sight of a proud woman who stood tall no matter where she went, and felt… absolutely nothing. There was no hate nor… any other emotion to speak of. All I had was indifference for someone who had nothing to do with me.I swatted her hand away in disgust. I wasn't violent about it, but my actions made my stance clear. I was through with her, for good."You have no favors left to cash in, Ms. Kingsley. And you want me to remember how much I loved you? Then, why don't you take a walk down memory lane and recall just what you did t

Artemisia waved me goodbye. "Good night, Geronimo." She smiled. "And remember to check out my gift when you get home."I didn't wait until I got home. Instead, I played the video while I was on the way home. To my surprise, the video showed a broken Yvonne writhing in agony and Zachary looking at her with disgust and contempt. I should've known that she would be hounding him.Still, I quickly noticed that they weren't alone. Aside from Zachary and Yvonne, there was a partially covered woman whose skin was littered with marks that told me what she had to have experienced earlier. If that didn't cinch it, then the fact that she was lying in Zachary's embrace was telling enough.Through the video, I saw the look of contempt in her eyes when she looked at Yvonne. That same look was mirrored in Zachary's eyes. Sure enough, every word that came out of her mouth next was positively dripping with derision."You have such poor taste for women, Zach. Her face is a 5 on her best day, and he

When Philip heard the news and hurried to Yvonne, the first thing he did was hit her with his walking stick."How dare you bring that boy up, you insolent girl! We can see how much he cared about you, but you threw him aside like trash and kept pushing him until he snapped! You made your bed, now you're going to lie in it! Alone! "Don't count on any help from us! You're nothing to the family now!"Yvonne shook her head violently and cried her heart out as she pleaded, "No, Grandpa, please, I'm sorry! Please don't abandon me! I'm the only girl in the family! I swear I can change his mind, I swear! Please, trust me!"Everyone knows he loves me more than anything. I know he'll forgive me if I apologize sweetly and lower my head!"All that pleading only earned that woman another hard slap from Philip. "Silence, you shameless harlot! I can't believe we're related! You're an absolute embarrassment to the family!"Yvonne was nearing her breaking point. She clenched the divorce papers

I knew for a fact that Yvonne could absolutely get used to not having me around. In fact, she'd probably love it. My absence meant more alone time for her and Zachary. No, the real story was that she couldn't get used to having no one catering to her every single whim. She had a disagreeable stomach, and she could never let any stranger deal with household affairs. I was the one who did all the chores, from cleaning to laundry to cooking.I was truly such a fool to have wasted my best years on a woman like her. …In the end, I blocked her number and socials before going straight to Imperia.Once I settled in, I wasted no time getting to know the family business and started from the bottom. It took time, but I was returning to my old, proud self.I couldn't care less about Yvonne or her life. The legal team I'd commissioned was one of the best, and they worked efficiently. They would handle everything for me.Two weeks went by before news about Yvonne came to me. My attorney cal

I didn't dignify her question with even a single look. Instead, I went down and carefully, gingerly picked up Dot's remains. His body was already turning cold and stiff. As I walked out of the residence with Dot, I called my attorney right in front of Yvonne. "Mr. Chaucer? It's me, Geronimo. Grab all your files and come to my apartment. I want a divorce right now. Also, get more files ready. "I'm suing Yvonne Kingsley for aggravated assault, illegal imprisonment, and lynching."I inhaled deeply as my voice took on a colder edge, enough to cut steel. "Sort out the evidence of her sending kidnappers and using violence on me. Also, sort out proof that she'd transferred all her assets. "I want to make it so that she doesn't get a single cent from the divorce, and I want her reputation destroyed."I hung up. That witch had gone paler than a ghost, but I ignored her. She screamed in terror and tried to deny her crimes. I continued to ignore her shouts of disbelief as she realized th

Yvonne's eyes went wide with disbelief. She froze up like a statue, and the righteous fury on her face pulled her facial muscles taut. She couldn't believe what I'd just said.I was the man who thought of her as my whole world. I was the man who used to tolerate all her faults, no matter how childish and wilful she was. Yet, the same man was now demanding a divorce."What?" she raised her voice. There was fury, nervousness, and a hint of panic that was hiding beneath everything. "Are you mad? You're getting a divorce over nothing!"She jabbed a finger at me as if I were the unreasonable one. "It's just some stupid clothes your mother made! And all I did was defend Zach! You're unbelievable! You're petty and unreasonable! You didn't use to be like this!"Where'd the loving and tolerant Geronimo go? You have one second to tell me that you're joking!" She was grumbling and pointing fingers at me, making me the villain in a story when she was the real villainess between us both. It
