The twins were giggling over wooden blocks on the carpet. Their laughter was soft and innocent. I sat in the armchair by the window, pretending to read a book I hadn’t touched in the last ten minutes.

Aria and Ronan hadn’t come back yet.

I watched Kael stack a second block on top of the first, tongue sticking out in pure concentration. Talia knocked it over a second later with a triumphant squeal, and he let out a dramatic groan before smiling again.
