The doors to the Great Hall opened with a heavy creak, and Elder Vane was marched in under heavy guard.

Every seat in the Citadel was filled. Every eye turned toward us. The murmurs that had echoed across the chamber fell into a thick, suffocating silence.

He walked in like he still owned the place. Chin high, steps steady, shoulders unbothered. The chains on his wrists clinked faintly with each step, but if he noticed, he didn’t show it.

I stood on the dais at the head of the chamber, Ronan flanking me. I met Vane’s eyes as the guards brought him forward. He didn’t even blink.

I waited until they turned him to face us, the cuffs gleaming like silver against his skin.
