"You know," Vernon started saying and leaned forward a little, while resting his forearms casually against the edge. "I've never stopped thinking that you look familiar. Like I've seen you somewhere before."

Calla knew that this was the moment he had been waiting for. The moment that would possibly reveal the truth of why they seemed so familiar to each other.

"That's probably because we've been working together for months."

As expected, Vernon shook his head lightly. "No, I mean before that. Like... years ago."

She chuckled and rolled her eyes, deciding to play along. "Maybe you've just got one of those brains that tricks you into thinking everyone's a long-lost friend. You're free to guess, but just know that I'm not exactly famous like you."

Vernon laughed as the conversation shifted to his fame and everything else. But somewhere between speaking about his social life and how he became friends with Julian Voss, the conversation stirred back to Calla.

"So... where'd you grow up? If

The moment Julian's lips crashed against hers, Calla's entire body went still. For a heartbeat, she couldn't breathe, couldn't think, and couldn't even remember where she was. His mouth was firm and demanding, and she didn't even know how to react. Part of her wanted to push him away, to tell him that this wasn't how things were supposed to happen. But the other part of her, the one she had buried deep down for years, didn't want him to stop. The warmth of his body seeped through the fabric of his shirt, and her knees felt weak as her trembling fingers found their way to his chest. She had imagined what it might be like to kiss Julian before. She had wondered, in secret moments, what it would feel like if his lips ever touched hers. But nothing—nothing, had prepared her for this. It wasn't gentle or careful. It was fierce, consuming, and completely out of control. It felt like he was taking everything she had been afraid to give—her anger, her confusion, her unspoken feelings—and pu

Norman walked briskly toward his car with his suit jacket slung over one arm and his keys in the other. The day had gone better than expected and now, he wanted nothing more than to celebrate the latest and one of the biggest partnerships in history.Just as he pressed the unlock button and reached for the door handle, he heard footsteps behind him and glanced sideways to see Vernon."Montclair. Didn't expect to see you here." "I just stopped by," Vernon replied, casually leaning against the car door with his arms crossed. "But I trust the deal went through?" Norman gave a short nod, not at all surprised that Vernon already knew. The man had connections everywhere, especially since he and Julian were as close as business allies could get."It did. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'd like to take my...""What do you want with her?" Vernon suddenly asked.Norman froze for a second, then straightened slowly. His hand still rested on the door handle, but he didn't open it. Instead, he turned

Julian furrowed his brows and looked at her for some time. Then, slowly he rose from his chair and walked over to her."Have you been drinking?""What? No," Calla replied quickly, then sighed. "Well... just a couple of glasses of champagne. That's all."Julian gave a small nod, before walking back to his seat. Of course, that explained it. She was drunk and not thinking straight. That was why she had suddenly come to him tonight.Back at his desk, he sat down and leaned back in his chair. "Go get some rest, Calla," "No, what?""I said—get some rest," Julian said firmly, picking up his pen and dismissing her at once. "We'll talk another time, when you're sober,""I am sober!" "I don't want confessions made under the haze of champagne. Come back to me when your mind is clear,"Calla's frustration exploded and she marched closer, "I only had champagne, Julian, not a whole bottle. Two fûcking glasses over that shîtty dinner, that's all."That word caught him and he looked up."Dinner?"

Calla's breath caught in her throat. She stared at him, confused and unsure if this was just another one of his cocky games or some twisted joke he thought was funny. But then, she caught the look on his face and her stomach dropped. He wasn't joking."Wait... what do you mean our life story?"Vernon held her gaze, his jaw tightening "The girl in the story... the one who disappeared, that wasn't just some character. That was you, Calla."Her heart skipped a beat."I..." She stammered, shaking her head slowly. "I don't understand." "You don't remember," Vernon said softly, almost more to himself than to her. He ran a hand over his face, trying to hold himself together. "But you... You are Vernice, my long-lost sister."The restaurant seemed to grow still, like even the air had frozen. Calla opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her throat felt tight and she suddenly felt dizzy as her mind spun wildly.Gripping the edge of the table, she tried to steady her racing pulse t

LATER IN THE EVENING~Calla sat across from Vernon, still wondering how she had let him talk her into this. She should have been back at her desk finishing up the work piled on her, or at home getting enough rest. Instead, here she was, sitting in one of the biggest restaurants in the city.Vernon leaned back in his chair with the usual cocky smile tugging at his lips. He already knew what she was thinking and still couldn't believe she had agreed to have dinner with him."Relax, Calla. You look like I dragged you here against your will." "Didn't you?"Vernon chuckled softly and shook his head. "Come on. Like I said, this is a celebration. I just thought it was worth marking the occasion.""You really didn't need to do this," Calla replied with a soft smile. "And besides, you don't really strike me as the type who celebrates things like that.""That means you don't know me as well as you think, sweetheart.""And there it is," Calla muttered, rolling her eyes. "The nickname routine."

THREE DAYS LATER••• Calla and Rina had just stepped into the coffee lounge when all eyes shifted toward them. A mixture of surprise and relief spread across the coworkers' faces, and almost immediately, a few rushed over."Welcome back, Calla!" One of the women said, giving her a warm smile. "It's so good to finally see you on your feet again.""We actually thought the worst had happened,""Are you okay?" Another asked. "We were so fûcking worried about you guys. The news about the explosion was everywhere and I know you must have been terrified.""Um... I'm fine. Really. Thank you for all the well wishes, it really meant a lot.""And Rina," Another voice chimed in from the side. "God, we missed your loud mouth around here," "And your never-ending drama and craziness," A man teased, earning an eye-roll from Rina that made everyone chuckle."What would we do without a Rina in a company like this? We couldn't even survive a week without you." "Finally!" Rina placed a hand on her ches
