Sophia noticed the envelope while clearing the breakfast table, its cream colored surface partly hidden beneath Adrian's medical papers. The name of a law firm was printed across the front, and the recent date caught her attention because Adrian had never mentioned contacting a lawyer. She reached toward it, but before her fingers touched the envelope, Adrian's voice came from behind her.

"Leave that alone."

Sophia turned and found him watching her from the doorway, his expression unusually guarded.

"What is it?"

"Something personal."

"You have never needed a lawyer for something personal."

Adrian wheeled closer and took the envelope from her hand, sliding it beneath the other papers with deliberate care. Sophia watched him closely because his reaction was far too serious for something he claimed was unimportant, but she decided not to press him immediately.

"Not everything concerns you."

The words landed harder than he intended, and his expression softened almost immediately. Sophia folded her arms and stared at him, wondering why a simple envelope had suddenly become something he was desperate to keep away from her.

"After everything we talked about last night, you expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to trust me."

"I do trust you."

"Then trust me enough to let this go."

Sophia wanted to push further, but the exhaustion in his face made her stop. She returned to clearing the table while Adrian wheeled himself out of the kitchen, leaving the envelope behind in her thoughts even though it was no longer in sight.

That afternoon, Sophia found Adrian in the study sorting through several documents. He looked up when she entered and immediately closed the folder in front of him, which only strengthened her suspicion that the papers had something to do with the mysterious envelope.

"You are hiding something again."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Good afternoon to you too."

She almost smiled despite herself, but the question remained.

"I am serious."

"So am I."

Sophia walked toward the window before turning back to him, her patience beginning to wear thin after another morning of unanswered questions.

"You know what I hate?"

"What?"

"When you decide something alone and then call it protecting me."

Adrian's expression changed as he wheeled himself closer to the desk. He looked at Sophia for several seconds before reaching for her hand, and the gesture softened the tension between them without answering the question.

"I am not trying to hurt you."

"I know."

"That is why I am trying to understand you."

Adrian lowered his eyes briefly before looking back at her.

"I know things have changed."

"They have."

"But you have not."

Sophia frowned because she did not understand what he meant.

"What does that mean?"

"You are still here."

"Of course I am."

Adrian's fingers tightened around hers, and something vulnerable appeared in his expression.

"Sometimes I wonder why."

Sophia's expression softened as she moved closer to him. She knew exactly what he was asking, even though he had not said the words directly.

"Because I love you."

Adrian looked away, and Sophia gently squeezed his hand before continuing.

"You do not have to earn my love by becoming the man you were before the accident."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Adrian looked back at her.

"I am trying to."

The tension finally eased, and Adrian leaned back in his wheelchair with a faint smile as though he wanted to remember what their marriage had felt like before every conversation became a battle against his hopelessness. He suddenly asked whether she remembered their first apartment, and Sophia laughed when he reminded her about the leaking ceiling and the kitchen cabinet he had nearly destroyed while attempting to repair it.

"You broke that cabinet."

"I was trying to fix it."

"You made it worse."

"I remember you still cooked for me."

"Because you would have starved otherwise."

Their laughter filled the room, and for a few minutes they were simply husband and wife again rather than two people struggling against everything the accident had changed. Adrian reached for her hand afterward and kissed her forehead, his expression becoming serious once more.

"I miss this."

"So do I."

Adrian looked at her for a moment before speaking quietly.

"That is why I need you to trust me."

Sophia lifted her head, immediately sensing that he was retreating behind the same wall again.

"Trust you with what?"

Adrian did not answer, and the silence that followed told Sophia that whatever he was hiding was not something he was ready to reveal.

The following morning, Sophia received a call from the hospital while Adrian was in another room. The receptionist explained that they were contacting her about a specialist consultation Adrian had scheduled before cancelling it, and Sophia immediately asked why he had never mentioned the appointment. When she learned that he had also requested some of his medical records be transferred to another specialist, her concern deepened because Adrian had never told her he was seeking another medical opinion.

"Do you know who the specialist is?"

"I am sorry, Mrs. Vale. You would need to speak with Mr. Vale about that."

Sophia thanked the receptionist and ended the call, but she did not confront Adrian immediately because she wanted him to tell her the truth without feeling cornered. She waited until evening, when he returned from rehabilitation and wheeled into the sitting room, then stood in front of him with her arms folded.

"You cancelled a consultation."

Adrian stopped his wheelchair.

"Who told you?"

"The hospital."

He sighed and looked away.

"I did not want you worrying about it."

"Then tell me what it was."

"It was nothing."

"Then why cancel it?"

Adrian remained silent for several seconds before answering.

"Because I already know what they are going to say."

Sophia stepped closer, refusing to let him escape behind another vague answer.

"What are they going to say?"

His silence made her heartbeat quicken.

"You said you wanted children," she reminded him. "So why are you suddenly avoiding the doctors?"

Adrian's face tightened.

"I do not want to discuss this."

"You discussed it with yourself."

"Sophia."

"No. You cannot tell me that you want a family and then secretly make decisions that affect whether that future is possible."

Adrian's voice hardened as frustration replaced his usual restraint.

"I am trying to protect you from disappointment."

"You do not get to decide what I can handle."

He stared at her for several seconds before his expression softened again.

"I know."

"Then tell me the truth."

"I am not ready."

The admission silenced Sophia because Adrian had finally acknowledged the fear beneath his stubbornness. She reached for his hand, and this time he did not pull away.

"Whatever you are afraid of, we can face it together."

He held her hand tightly.

"I wish I could believe that."

"You can."

Adrian wheeled closer and pulled her gently against him, allowing her to rest against his chest for several quiet seconds. Sophia closed her eyes, letting herself enjoy the comfort of her husband, but the questions surrounding his secret remained waiting for her when the moment ended.

"There are things I need to settle before you understand."

Sophia pulled back and searched his face.

"What things?"

Adrian looked at her with an expression she could not read.

"I cannot tell you yet."

That night, Sophia could not sleep because Adrian's secrecy had become impossible to ignore. She went downstairs for water and noticed the light from his study spilling through the partly open door, and although she knew she should leave the room alone, the unanswered questions pulled her inside.

Several papers were scattered across the desk, and beneath them she saw the cream colored envelope again. This time, it had already been opened, and Sophia picked up the first document while reminding herself that she only wanted to understand what Adrian was hiding.

Most of the page contained legal language she barely understood, but one sentence immediately caught her attention because it referred to Adrian's future medical decisions and a specialist consultation connected to his ability to have children. Her fingers tightened around the paper as she realized that the appointment he had cancelled was not about ordinary rehabilitation.

She placed the document down and noticed another sheet underneath it. Only a name was visible, and Sophia leaned closer to read it, but before she could pick up the paper, the soft movement of Adrian's wheelchair came from the hallway.

She turned sharply and found him at the doorway, his hands resting on the wheels as his eyes settled on the document in her hand. His expression changed immediately, and for several seconds neither of them spoke because the secret he had worked so hard to hide was finally standing between them.

"Sophia."

She swallowed before raising the document slightly.

"Who is this doctor?"

Adrian said nothing.

"Why have you been seeing a specialist about having children?"

His eyes lowered.

"I wanted to tell you."

"But you did not."

"I was trying to find out the truth first."

Sophia stared at him, her curiosity now stronger than her fear.

"What truth?"

Adrian's hands tightened around the wheels of his chair.

"Whether there is still a chance."

Sophia's heart skipped.

"A chance for what?"

Adrian looked at her, and the pain in his eyes returned.

"For the family we wanted."

Sophia stepped closer, refusing to let him hide behind silence again.

"Then why have you been acting like it is already impossible?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because I am afraid of the answer."

Sophia remained silent as the pieces slowly began connecting in her mind. Adrian had not abandoned their dream because he no longer wanted it, and he had not been secretly preparing to leave her, but something he had learned after the accident had convinced him that the family they had always imagined might be beyond their reach.

She looked at the specialist's name again and realized that finding the truth would not be enough. If Adrian was too afraid to face the answer himself, then she would have to find it for both of them.

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    THE HOPE HE PRETENDS TO HAVE

Sophia remained beside her car long after Damien ended the call, staring at the dark screen while his warning replayed in her mind. Someone inside the Vale family might have been involved in Adrian's accident, yet Damien had refused to explain why he was investigating it or what he intended to do with what he had discovered, leaving Sophia with more questions than answers. The folder Adrian had hidden from her was still inside her handbag, but she could not bring herself to open it because Adrian's words troubled her more than Damien's warning, especially the way he had told her she deserved another life as though he had already decided he would no longer be part of it.When Sophia finally entered the mansion, she found Adrian sitting near the window with an old photograph in his hands, and he quickly lowered it when he noticed her. She recognized the picture immediately because it showed the unfinished nursery in their old house, the same room they had once stood in while arguing pla

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    THE SECRET DAMIEN KEPT

Sophia was fastening her earrings when her phone vibrated on the dressing table, and Adrian's name appeared on the screen with a question about where she had been the previous afternoon. Before she could answer, another message arrived from an unknown number with a photograph attached, and the sight of her car parked outside Damien's estate made her fingers tighten around the phone. Beneath the photograph were six words that immediately erased the calm she had been trying to maintain: You should be careful who you visit.Sophia enlarged the photograph and checked the timestamp twice, wondering how long someone had been watching her without being noticed. She grabbed her handbag and left the room, deciding that whoever had sent the warning had already crossed a line, and Damien was the only person who might understand what was happening.Damien opened his door before she could knock twice, but the moment his eyes settled on the phone in her hand, his expression changed. • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Line They Should Not Cross

Sophia returned to the hospital the following morning with Damien's words still circling through her mind, but the moment Adrian saw her enter, he closed the file on his lap and watched her approach with an expression that told her he already knew where she had been. She placed her handbag beside the chair and stood before him, determined not to allow another conversation to end with half answers, while Adrian remained silent until the tension between them became impossible to ignore."You went to Damien," Adrian said."You knew I would.""I told you not to go.""You told me to stay away from him, Adrian, but you never told me why."Adrian looked toward the window, his fingers tightening around the edge of the file. "Because Damien is not someone you should involve yourself with."Sophia folded her arms. "He said you knew he would refuse before you sent me there."Adrian's jaw tightened, and that reaction gave her an answer before he spoke. "It does not matter.""It matters to me."He

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Man She Was Warned About

Sophia almost turned around when the black gates came into view because the address Adrian had given her led to an estate far more imposing than she had expected. A security guard approached her car, and after she gave him her name, he checked something on his tablet before opening the gate without asking another question. That small reaction unsettled her because it suggested Damien was expecting her, yet she had received no message from him and Adrian had never mentioned contacting his brother. Sophia drove through anyway, reminding herself that she had not come this far to retreat before getting the answer Adrian had refused to give her.She parked beneath the covered entrance and stepped out with her handbag in one hand. Before she could reach the front door, it opened, and a man walked outside with the calm confidence of someone who never needed to announce his authority. The resemblance to Adrian was unmistakable, but the similarities ended there because Damien carried himself w

  • The Heir I Convinced With Him    The Name Behind the Door

Sophia turned the car around less than ten minutes after leaving the hospital. She had driven halfway home before Damien's name returned to her thoughts, and the more she tried to ignore it, the more impossible it became. Adrian's reaction had not been normal because he had not sounded annoyed or indifferent whenever Damien came up. He had sounded afraid, and that single detail refused to leave her mind. By the time she parked outside the hospital again, she had stopped asking herself whether she should investigate and started asking herself why Adrian was so desperate to stop her.The rehabilitation room was quieter than she expected. Adrian sat beside a treatment table while a therapist arranged equipment nearby, and both men looked up when she entered. Surprise crossed Adrian's face before he quickly buried it beneath his usual restraint, but Sophia noticed it anyway. She had spent years learning the smallest changes in his expressions, and she knew immediately that he had expected
