Chapter 3

Auteur: Pillow Stone
There was a crash as the door of the basement room exploded open.

A man deftly rolled in and swept me into his arms before running out.

“You’re…”

He looked down at me, his eyes shining bright like stars.

“My name is Owen Ward. I’m Matthew’s little brother.”

I suddenly recalled him. He was Matthew’s father’s illegitimate son. He was the only second son in the history of the Ward family.

On the day his mother’s pregnancy was confirmed, the entire Ward family celebrated, thinking that the curse had been broken. However, that same day, Matthew’s father died of sickness in a very sudden manner.

A life had been taken away for one that had been given. It was hard to deny that it was fate at work.

When Owen was born, he was found to be infertile as well.

With that, he was no longer the family’s last hope. Instead, he was the monster who had caused his own father’s death.

At this very moment, however, he was looking at me with eyes full of hope. “Dr. Harman, can you cure me? I swear that I will repay your kindness.”

If Owen could procreate, then he would no longer be the illegitimate son that everyone despised. Instead, he would take Matthew’s spot as the Ward family’s only heir.

I smiled. “I will cure your illness.”

I brought Owen to the hospital. Just as I was talking to my supervisor about Owen’s condition, I saw Matthew and Cynthia.

Cynthia’s expression immediately shifted when she spotted me. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be…?”

“Should be where?”

Cynthia paused at that before regaining her smile. She held Matthew’s hand and said, “Matt, it looks like Lil regrets rejecting you earlier. Look, she came back here to treat you. Perhaps I should let her do it since she’s a real, acknowledged expert.”

Matthew scoffed. “She’s no expert. I looked into it. Lilith hasn’t even attended university! She’s a scammer!”

A furor immediately went up among the people milling around.

“That can’t be! Lilith Harman is Statute Hospital’s star expert. How could it be possible that she hasn’t attended university?”

“Goodness, I purposely came to this hospital to see her! I waited three days for an appointment but never got one!”

“If Mr. Ward said it, there’s no way it’s not true! I bet Lilith Harman’s sleeping with someone in the hospital. The only way she’s gotten this far in life is because of a man!”

My supervisor, Dr. Reynolds, instantly panicked. “How could you people accuse someone without proof like this? Ms. Harman is a special expert we hired under unique circumstances. She doesn’t need an academic record!”

“Who would believe that? Maybe you’re her sugar daddy?”

“There’s definitely something going on between you two!”

“Y-You!” Dr. Reynolds sputtered furiously.

I could not be bothered to treat this gossip seriously. I did not want to ruin Dr. Reynolds’ reputation, either.

Thus, I looked at Cynthia and said, “There’s no point in talking about any of this. Do you dare to compete with me? We will each treat a patient. Whoever cures her patient wins. If I win, you will publicly apologize and admit to defaming me.”

Cynthia laughed. “Such a contest is beneath me!”

I replied blandly, “What’s wrong? Are you afraid?”

“How dare you!”

She glared at me angrily. She reached a hand into a bag and must have found my set of bone needles. It gave her confidence.

“Alright, I’ll compete against you! If you lose, then you’ll have to crawl around like a dog and call yourself a cheap mutt!”

“Sure.” I accepted the challenge without a second thought.

Matthew pulled Cynthia into his embrace. He said to me tauntingly, “This isn’t fun enough. I bet fifty million dollars that Cynthia will win! Do you dare make the same bet, scammer?”

My kind had a rule against gambling and bets.

I was about to reject the bet when someone behind me said, “I’ll bet one-hundred million dollars that Lilith will win!”

I looked back to see Owen walking over. He stood beside me staunchly.

Matthew’s eyes narrowed. “What are you doing here? Is this your new friend, Lilith? Do you need a man so badly?”

“Be mindful of your words. He is my patient,” I said. “You’re both from the same family and have the same cause for your condition. This makes the competition perfectly fair.”

Matthew said sarcastically, “This man is an illegitimate son. He’s not worthy of being referred to as my family! Don’t think I don’t know what you’re planning. I’m warning you now, the Ward family is mine!”

“You said one hundred million dollars, right? Well, I’m evening my bet!”

The surrounding crowd got excited, and many quickly joined in on betting.

Meanwhile, I pushed Owen into a surgery room.

“Let’s go. We’re starting now.”

Matthew was sprawled on the ground, looking sad and pitiful. Many people milling around could recognize that he used to be the influential heir of the Ward family. They had no qualms at all about taking their phones out and recording him to share online. Soon, various media outlets shared this footage. They all highlighted how pitiful he looked with his urinary bag dripping out in public.Even the Ward Group’s reputation was affected. Soon, Cynthia joined in and exposed how Matthew and Cassandra had locked her and Harriet and Bart up and tormented them. Owen was stopped from interfering even as the Ward Group’s share price went up and down. Lester decided to announce the disownment of Matthew and Cassandra. Cassandra was chased out of the Ward family and became homeless. She despised the Harman family and reported Cynthia and her parents for trying to murder me by burning me alive. Matthew also became a witness. He submitted his chat records with Cynthia as evidence.I

Lilith's POV’“That’s impossible!”Matthew thought that I was simply denying the truth and was very agitated. “That’s you! She looks just like you! Even the snake tail is the same. How could you not be her?”I returned the painting to him and explained flatly, “This is my ancestress.”“It’s rare for serpent-kin to be female, especially in these later generations. I don’t have the power of my ancestress. Thus, even my human guise is a copy of her. That’s why we look alike. However, you’re not wrong. Indeed, she has always taken care of the Ward family. She’s your family’s guardian.”There were several families of guardians in the northeast. Mainly, these were the Wickett, Schuster, Benson, Lilith, and Gray lines. The serpent-kin were of the Lilith line. The Ward family ancestor saved the life of my ancestress. Because of this, she managed to take the shape of a human. Thus, she made a vow to become the Ward family’s guardian and protect them through the generations. In the

Third-person POVThere was no news about Matthew for a long time after he was discharged. After tormenting the Harman family to vent his frustrations, he fell into a helpless void. He used to be influential as the heir of the Ward family, and countless young ladies tried to pursue him. However, he had become an invalid who relied on a urinary bag for the rest of his life, and no one wanted him anymore. As such, he decided to run away. The Ward family came from the northeast, and there was still an ancestral home there. By some divine guidance, he managed to find their old house when he arrived in a small village in the mountains. The Ward family had been spending money to hire someone to manage this house, so it was decently clean. It was just disused and thus smelled musty. The longer he looked at this house, in which his ancestor had once lived, the calmer he got.But then, he looked up and saw a painting in the middle of the living room. The painting featured a woman in w

The ward instantly became quiet. Matthew was the first to come back to himself. He threw the barely conscious Cynthia aside and tried to lunge over. “That’s impossible. He’s useless. He can’t be cured! Grandpa, he’s illegitimate. You can’t let him inherit the Ward family!”Cassandra’s face was pale. She questioned Lester, “You can’t let an illegitimate son come in and lord over Matthew when he’s suffering from such a huge blow! You’ve always adored Matthew. You can’t do this to him!”Lester looked straight at Owen with a calculating gaze. “Doctor, examine him.”“Grandpa!”Ignoring Matthew’s and Cassandra’s protests, the doctor brought Owen to the neighboring ward. Half an hour later, Owen came back red-faced. He nodded at me. The doctor returned with a report and announced disbelievingly, “Mr. Owen Ward is indeed cured. Everything looks peachy! This is truly a miracle. Even a healthy and whole man doesn’t have such great numbers! Mr. Ward Senior, I assure you that Owen he

In an instant, the ward next door descended into chaos. When I brought Owen over, Cynthia was sprawled on the floor in rumpled clothes. Her face was pale with fright. Matthew was being held down on the bed, his face twisted up from pain. He kept shouting, “It hurts! Save me! It hurts so much down there!”I took a glance and saw a huge patch of blood on the bed. Ouch. Even looking at it hurt. Matthew’s mother, Cassandra Ward, slapped Cynthia when she saw her. “What have you done to my son? Didn’t you say you could cure him? Is this what you meant by curing him?”Cynthia was so scared that she trembled all over. “I-I don’t know… I really did cure him…”Harriet hugged Cynthia close, pained that she was slapped. “Mrs. Ward, you shouldn’t just go around slapping people. This must be a misunderstanding. I’m sure Cynthia has cured Matthew. The doctors all saw it!”“You call him cured? He’s lost his manhood!”Cassandra was incensed. She used her handbag and swung it at Harriet’s a

Cynthia cried out shrilly, “What did you do? You’ve killed him!”Matthew was pleased by my failure. “You’re done for, Lilith. Even if Owen is just an illegitimate son, he’s still a member of the Ward family. The Ward family won’t let you off for this! But if you beg me, I might be merciful and help you.”I pressed my lips tightly together and quickly tied up Owen’s limbs before giving emergency aid. The doctors in the observation room were all frowning. “What is Dr. Lilith doing? How did that man end up that way?”“She must have panicked after seeing Dr. Cynthia succeed.”“This is absurd! How could she mess up under pressure? It seems we will have to rethink allowing her to be an expert here!”Fifteen minutes later, Owen was finally stable again, and he fell into unconsciousness. I wiped away my sweat and let out a relieved breath. Cynthia walked over and looked at Owen’s limp manhood. She laughed in delight. “You’ve lost, Lil. I’ll be awaiting your performance.”I peeked o
