Ross’s voice was low, almost too controlled. “Tell me.”

Emma’s fingernails dug into her palms as violently as she could, trying to divert the pain in her heart into physical pain. She swallowed, forcing herself to meet his gaze even though it felt like pressing against a blade. “Liz…I… eloped. That’s what the investigators told your mother. That I had a family, a fiancé, and I left them behind for someone else, an unnamed someone else.”

For the first time since she’d known him, Ross laughed without humor. It was sharp and disbelieving, and his palm caressed her face. “That’s absurd. I don’t believe it for a second.”

Emma’s lips trembled. Ross’ constant unwavering belief in her when she had none in herself was always unbearable. “But it’s what they found. Eliana showed me the file herself.”

“I don’t care what she showed you.” He stepped closer, his other hand gripping the back of the chair as though anchoring himself and her in the moment. “I know you. You wouldn’t…” He stopped, jaw fl

Emma forced her lips into something resembling a smile, though she knew it didn’t convince Lily in the slightest. “Really, it’s nothing,” she said quickly, waving her hand as though shooing away invisible insects. “Just a headache.” Lily arched a brow, looking completely unimpressed. “A headache that makes you look like you’re about to hurl yourself off the balcony? Sure.” She didn’t press further, though, thank God. Instead, she slumped into the chair at the desk, tearing open the takeaway bag. The smell of pizza filled the air, making Emma suddenly voracious. “How was work?”, she asked. “I swear,” Lily began, passing Emma a slice that made the woman shriek in delight. Lily rolled her eyes at Emma. She’d been obsessed with greasy foods ever since Lily knew her, and now it was just ridiculous, only Emma got this excited over pizza. “Thank you Lily”, she said with big wet eyes, inhaling the slice. “You were saying something about work”. Lily, completely used to Emma’s pizz

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 48

Emma stared blankly at her empty screen, clutching the papers in her hand tightly. Lily was at work. She was in her room, sitting on her bed, and her world was colliding and collapsing.She. Was. Pregnant. She was fucking pregnant. “Argh!”, she let out a short scream. She was definitely dreaming, she closed her eyes and crossed her fingers, hoping she would wake up in a few minutes to realize this was just a dream her brain had concocted because of how much she missed Ross. But Emma knew it wasn’t a dream. She had done an official and non-official test, just casually, just to be sure she definitely wasn’t pregnant because of how dizzy she’d been feeling. She only did it for her own laughter, to rule it out of the reasons for her dizziness, but what was this?!She groaned again and folded in on herself. She had a baby in her. Ross put a baby in her. She slept with Ross one time and he put a baby in her. It felt surreal, like she was watching in on another person’s life and not her

The room, although large, seemed to shrink around Ross. He had never been someone who saw the world in color, but for a short period of time, he had. Emma, she’d been the color in his greyscale life, and because the universe hated him, abhorred him even, she left. Just when he had made his intentions known, when he had begun to make plans, she just went.He stretched his hand and picked up a bottle, eyebrows furrowing when he realized it was empty. He cocked his head over his chair and looked down to see all the bottles around him, they were all empty. He groaned.Pushing back his seat, he all but stumbled to his homebar, picking up two bottles, shaking his head, and making it three. Why could he still feel? Why did his chest still constrict? Why did his heart still hurt? Why did it still feel like the blood that was running in his veins was icy and cold?It had been weeks, he had done everything he could to get numb, but nothing seemed to work. Everything reminded him of her, everyth

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 46

The night fell heavy around her, pressing down like a second blanket. Emma had gone to bed beside Lily’s soft chatter about work and morning errands, but when sleep claimed her, it dragged her into someone else’s life.In her dreams, she was small again, far too small. The world was filled with towering walls and heavy voices.A woman’s hand brushed her hair, careful enough not to tug, but careless enough to sting. Her mother’s face was blurred, like smoke in a mirror, but the cold in her tone was sharp. “Don’t fidget. Don’t embarrass me.”The room smelled of stale perfume, and dust clung to curtains that never opened. She wanted to run outside, to see light, to play, but she stayed seated, obedient, waiting for praise that never came. And in the quiet of her little room, she would press her face into her pillow and whisper to herself, “One day, someone will love me.”But no one came.Physically, Emma subconsciously shed a tear. The dream shifted. Time leapt forward. She was older, dr

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 45

Emma had been moving through the city like a ghost at first, half-alive in various lobbies and silent cafes, but now, weeks later, she had clawed her way into something resembling a rhythm. She wasn’t just meeting people, she was making herself useful. The kind of usefulness that made her number show up on people’s phones when they were stuck in their business and needed something done. She had a notebook full of names already. Producers, assistants, a woman who ran a little gallery out of her apartment, even the bartender at a place downtown who somehow knew everybody worth knowing. It wasn’t glamorous. It was hard work, harder than an office job, with endless follow-ups and little favors. But the web was forming, and she was in the middle of it. Before too long, her name would have been widespread as a consultant, she just knew it.She had to say, working with the little business owners was a million times more entertaining than she had expected. Like the morning she sat cross-le

  • The Heiress Curse; Reborn For A Cause    Chapter 44

Chapter 44 The spider was gone the next morning.Emma lay in the same narrow bed of the hotel room, one arm over her eyes, trying to convince herself that its absence was a good omen. Maybe it had crawled out through a crack in the ceiling, or maybe housekeeping had found it and flushed it down the drain. But she couldn’t shake the ridiculous notion that even the spider had sensed how temporary this stop in her life was. That nothing stayed in place around her for long. She had thought running would be harder. That leaving Ross, leaving the Dale foundation, leaving Eliana, would feel like shackling herself to grief and dragging it across every city block. But the strangest part was how easy it had been in practice. Pack a bag. Get on a couple ubers. Buy a cheap room. Disappear. The logistics were insultingly simple. The ache, though, was the part she hadn’t accounted for.It was still raw, a gnawing thing deep under her ribs. She hadn’t even given herself time to process the last day
