Priya was waiting by Ariel's locker the next morning, two more students in tow, a boy Ariel recognized vaguely from Advanced Biology and another girl clutching a battered chemistry textbook like it had personally wronged her.

"I told them," Priya said, a little sheepishly. "About the tutoring thing. I hope that's okay."

"I said I'd think about it," Ariel reminded her, though she was already softening at the hopeful, slightly desperate look on all three faces.

The peace didn't last, not entirely, because Britney's softer moments never quite erased the parts of her that were still terrified of disappearing inside her own family. Ariel learned this the hard way three weeks later, when Nathan showed up at her bedroom door holding a printed spreadsheet, his face pale in a way she'd never seen on him."You need to see this," he said.It was a list, dense with figures, dates, transactions. It took Ariel a moment to understand what she was looking at."Britney's been pulling money from the family's scholarship fund," Nathan said. "Small amounts, spread out over months, routed through a private account she opened using our mother's old identification documents. She's been using it to pay a contact at the testing company, someone who agreed to flag your Harvard application materials for review, delay them, maybe worse."Ariel's stomach dropped. "She's trying to keep me out of Harvard.""I don't think that's even the real goal," Nathan said quietly.

The weeks that followed settled into something almost like peace, if peace could exist in a house where Britney's smile never quite reached her eyes and an unknown number occasionally still buzzed Ariel's phone with fragments that never added up to a full picture.Ariel's academic standing at Crestmore had become impossible to ignore. Her name started appearing on department shortlists, quietly at first, then less quietly. Mrs. Whitfield stopped her in the hallway one morning between classes, a printed list in hand."You've been nominated for the Whitmore Science Prize," Mrs. Whitfield said, not quite hiding her satisfaction. "Faculty vote, not student. Nobody can accuse you of campaigning for it.""I didn't know that was a thing I could be nominated for.""Most students who deserve it don't. That's usually the point." Mrs. Whitfield handed her the list, Ariel's name near the top, sandwiched between two seniors she barely recognized. "The ceremony's in three weeks. Try to look surpris

Britney's apology, if it could even be called that, didn't come until nearly a week after the parking lot. Ariel found her at her locker after the final bell, and this time it was Ariel who did the cornering."You told Theo I was positioning myself," Ariel said, no preamble. "That I knew who his family was before I ever got in his car."Britney didn't bother denying it, which was somehow worse than if she had. "Did it work?""For about two days.""Only two days." Britney's laugh was short and bitter. "I'm losing my touch.""Why do this, Britney? Really. Not the version you gave me by the fountain, the true one."For a moment Britney's guard slipped, the same crack Ariel had seen in the garden weeks earlier. "Because you keep winning," she said quietly. "The exam. My parents. Now Theo, apparently, even after I tried. I keep waiting for you to fail at something, and you just don't." Her voice caught. "I don't know how to be the version of me that doesn't matter most in this family. I've

  • The Heiress Nobody Wanted    Chapter 11: What Nathan Saw

Ariel spent the ride home replaying every word of the conversation with Theo, trying to figure out where exactly it had gone wrong, whether there'd been a sentence she should have said differently, a moment she could have caught before it slipped past her. She barely noticed the mansion's gates sliding open until the car had already stopped in the driveway.Nathan was waiting on the front steps, arms crossed, an expression on his face she hadn't seen from him before."I saw him drive off," he said, before she'd even gotten out of the car. "Theo. From the parking lot. He looked like someone had just handed him a puzzle with half the pieces missing.""That's about right," Ariel said, tired."What did Britney tell him?"Ariel filled him in as they walked inside together, the whole ugly shape of it, the implication that she'd known who Theo's family was before she ever needed a ride, that the friendship had been calculated from the start. Saying it out loud made it sound even smaller and

Jim was polishing silverware in the pantry when Ariel found him that evening, the same slow, deliberate work she'd caught him doing before, hands busy so his face had somewhere to look besides directly at whoever was asking him questions."Sasha," Ariel said, without preamble. The polishing cloth stopped."Where did you hear that name," Jim said quietly. Not really a question either."Someone's been texting me. They told me to ask you." Ariel stepped further into the pantry. "Nathan told me about the girl who tried to con this family before I showed up. Was that her? Sasha?"Jim set down the silverware very carefully, like it had suddenly become something that could break. For a long moment he didn't answer at all, and Ariel almost thought he wasn't going to, the same wall he'd put up every time before."Sasha worked in this house," he said finally. "Before. As a junior member of staff. She knew the family's history well enough to build a convincing story around it. Close enough to fo

"Just, maybe, one lunch period a week. We'll bring snacks. Good snacks, not cafeteria ones."Ariel almost laughed. "That's a generous offer.""We're desperate," the girl with the chemistry book said flatly. "Whitfield's midterm is in three weeks and none of us can tell an exothermic reaction from a hole in the ground.""One lunch period," Ariel agreed finally. "We'll see how it goes."The three of them lit up in a way that made something in Ariel's chest loosen further,
