Elena's POV

I couldn’t stop looking at him.

It was ridiculous. I’d known Caleb almost my entire life. Yet suddenly it felt like I was seeing him for the first time.

"So…" Caleb said, that small smile pulling at the corner of his mouth.

I was still trying to remember how to breathe properly.

"So…" I said back…

We were still standing close, the air between us different now, charged in a way it hadn't been before. Then he tilted his head slightly, eyes searching mine.

"Does this mean I can stop

A little later, the staff brought out my birthday cake. I was admiring it when Jenna suddenly cleared her throat beside me.I slowly turned to look at her.“No.”She grinned. “Elena, it’s your birthday! We have to sing!”“Caleb has already done that,” I said, giving him a mock stink eye. “In public, might I add.”Jenna waved a hand at me. “That was earlier. This is different!”“How is it different?”“Because we’re all here!” She clapped her hands, practically bouncing in her seat. “Okay, everybody, ready? Three, two, one!”Before I could protest, everyone burst into Happy Birthday, and I had no choice but to sit there, laughing as they sang. When they finished, Jenna clapped her hands.“Make a wish!”I closed my eyes for a moment, thought about what I wanted, and blew out the candles.“Did you wish for something good?” Ethan asked.“Of course.”“Can you tell us?”“Absolutely not. Then it won't come true.”He considered that before nodding. “Okay. Fair enough.”I laughed and reached ov

Elena’s povThe moment I spotted Caleb coming through the airport doors, I forgot about the people around me.He was pulling his suitcase behind him, looking around for me, and the second our eyes met, his face broke into a smile.I barely gave myself time to think before hurrying toward him.“Caleb!”He let go of his suitcase just in time to catch me when I threw my arms around his neck. My feet left the ground as he lifted me, spinning me around while I laughed against his shoulder.“Happy birthday,” he murmured, holding me close.I pulled back just enough to look at him, smiling as he brushed his fingers along my cheek.“You have no idea how happy I am to see you.”His smile softened. “Oh, I think I have some idea.”“Don’t get smug.”“Too late.”I laughed, and he kissed me again before I could come up with a reply. When we finally pulled apart, I stayed close, my forehead resting against his.“I missed you,” I murmured. His smile softened. “I missed you too. So much.”He brushed h

Elena’s povTwo months later — Vienna, Austria.“Again from the beginning of that phrase, please.”I lifted my fingers from the keys and glanced at the music coordinator standing beside the piano.“You know, I’m beginning to think those few bars have something against me.”He laughed. “I was going to say the same thing about you. You seem determined to win.”“I don’t like leaving things unfinished.”“Then we’re in agreement.”I smiled and adjusted the sheet music in front of me before settling my hands over the keys again. The rehearsal room had been quiet for most of the afternoon, aside from the piano and the occasional discussion between the small team working with me. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, falling across the polished floor and the open music folders scattered around the room.I took a breath and started again. This time, I let the melody carry me into the difficult passage instead of concentrating so hard on the notes themselves. My fingers moved across the k

  • The Heiress's Choice    171. The next step

Elena’s povI waited until I’d finished reviewing the last email on my screen before reaching for the business card Patricia slid across my desk a few days ago.Charles Bennett’s name and number were printed on it. I picked up my phone, typed in the number, and pressed call.He answered after the second ring.“Hello?”“Hi, Charles. It’s Elena Sterling. We met at the foundation event a few days ago.”“Of course, Elena. I was hoping you’d get in touch.”I smiled. “Well, here I am.”“Have you had a chance to think about our conversation?”“I have.” I leaned back in my chair, glancing at the notes I’d made after our meeting. “And I’d like to accept your invitation.”There was a brief pause before he answered.“I’m happy to hear that.”“Thank you. I’m looking forward to it.” I tapped my pen against the desk. “I’d like to go over what you’ll need from me so I can start making arrangements.”“Of course. That’s exactly what we should be discussing.”He explained that the festival team would w

  • The Heiress's Choice    170. At peace

Elena’s povBy the time I left my office, most of the floor had quieted down. I slipped my phone into my bag and headed for the elevators, ready to call it a day.I was halfway across the parking lot when I spotted Damien standing beside his car, phone pressed to his ear. It had been a while since I’d seen him around Sterling, and I’d gotten used to it.He looked a little tired, his sleeves rolled up and his hair slightly out of place, like he’d been staring at a screen all day.He turned, spotted me, and gave a small smile. I smiled back and continued toward my car, which was parked a few spaces away from his.By the time I reached him, he was wrapping up his call. He slipped his phone into his pocket.“Look who’s still working late.”I glanced at his car. “Funny. I was about to say the same thing.”“I had an excuse. You?”“I own the place.”He laughed. “Right. I forgot who I was talking to.”“Clearly.”He chuckled. “So, how are you?” “Good. I’m good.” I adjusted the strap of my bag

  • The Heiress's Choice    169. Making it work

Elena’s povI pulled into Sterling's underground parking garage just as I was beginning to lose patience with the traffic.Thankfully, the drive wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and I found an empty space a short distance from the private elevator. I parked, switched off the engine, and sat there for a moment, my hands resting on the steering wheel.Claire’s question from yesterday was still on my mind. I wanted to accept Charles’s invitation, but I couldn’t ignore the expansion. Surely there was a way to make both work. I just needed to figure out what that looked like.I grabbed my bag and stepped out of the car, locking it behind me before heading for the elevator.A few minutes later, I was on my floor and walking toward my office. Patricia was already at her desk, focused on her computer with a notepad beside her keyboard.I greeted her on my way in, then set my bag down and settled behind my desk.I pulled the Bellmont expansion papers Catherine had given me and spread them
